‘Just the meat for me please’ Sunday Lunch issue ’

Mondaytuesdayhappydays · 05/11/2025 13:47

SIS and BIL coming for Sunday Lunch, bringing DN and her BF- recently engaged.
Got a little gift for them and card etc, my parents were coming any way so invited Sunday for food as makes sense.

SIS has just WhatsApped to say jokingly that the BF -mega gym bunny - ‘doesn’t do potatoes and trimmings- but don’t worry he’ll just pile his plate high with meat’
Im doing a couple chickens and a gammon between us all so plenty for everyone alongside stuffing, veg, Yorkies , gravey, cauliflower cheese etc but definitely not for a huge piled up plate of just meat!

I replied lightheartedly to SIS to this effect and she’s not a happy camper at all.
Just texted to say wants him to feel welcome so will bring him a couple of raw pork chops or similar to fry - I’ve said bring them cooked and sliced already in a Tupperware as I won’t be frying chops with all the carnage of the roast going on and my parents milling about under my feet ‘helping’

Shes voice noting at the moment can see the symbol
honestly am I just old or a shit hostess or is this how guests who barely know their hosts I might add expect to be catered for ???

I mean veggie/vegan all power to you
but a plate piled up of meat for lunch seems a bit full on to me ??

I personally became preoccupied with this after being hit by a car and being unable to walk for 8 months. I had been doing strength training before the accident.

I lost all the shape in my thighs as I lost muscle. I started looking in to building muscle more seriously with the aim of regaining my leg strength.

It has taken me close on 3 years of gym going to build my thigh strength to what is was before the accident. It had to be slow because with the muscle loss, my knees became less stable and I had to increase the load slowly due to this.

Yeah, so not all vanity

Ok, mostly vanity with a few exceptions. Happy now? I'm glad you've been able to make positive changes, but the thousands of protein mad folk on IG are just vain (and often getting mummy and daddy to pay for the tons of meat they chow down on).

HelenHywater · 06/11/2025 08:51

I recognise the importance of protein (and weight training) for middle aged women and I try to eat 120g of protein a day and stick to my macros but I wouldn't specify that I ate a plate of meat if I went to someone else's for lunch.

And my protein isn't just made up of meat either - this young man could eat greek yoghurt, cottage cheese or eggs if he really needs to eat just protein.

Well said.
There's recognising the importance of protein and then there's worshipping meat.

People choose to be vegetarian/vegan though. And it's a pretty standard expectation that we cater to them. Carnivore diet is just the opposite end of that same spectrum. They are both chosen diets for equally spurious ethical/health reasons.

Having compassion for other living beings is a "spurious" reason to be vegetarian? And that is somehow equal with eating a carnivore diet? Ridiculous.

MeridaBrave · 06/11/2025 09:00

Sounds like keto if eating avocado and mayo. I don’t see why keto more faddy than veganism.

Either way I eat a lot of protein for health reasons (to build muscle & as fat gives me indigestion). Not sure others motivation is relevant.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 05/11/2025 14:14

Probably irrelevant, but I find the idea of a diet of mostly meat really repellent. I enjoy eating meat but not for every meal and I also love all forms of vegetables, including potatoes. A diet with no veg sounds extremely unhealthy, especially for the bowels.

And he must absolutely stink the toilet out when he has a poo.

It's vanity if you're obsessed with 'building muscle mass'.

Vanity is an interesting word to use in this context. It might be vanity, sure, but it doesn't automatically follow. DS has a high protein, low carb diet in order to give him the explosive power he needs to competes in Hyrox events - he doesn't do it to look good or impress anyone else, he does it because he finds it enormously beneficial to both his physical and mental health. Many other people could tell similar stories.

As I said upthread he does eat loads of veg and in the circumstances described by the OP he would eat what he was given because he has manners and isn't a dick. But a generalised assumption that anyone wanting to build muscle mass is de facto vain is cliched and out of date.

Foul bowels now, and a likely future of bowel cancer.

I'm looking forward to the update. I am imaging ten normal people asking about the happy couple about the proposal and the wedding. Studiously ignoring the six inch pile of meat the fiance is chowing down on like the first symptom of the zombie virus is manifesting.

He just wants a big plate of meat? How bloody boring.

Is the vanity aspect how well he does in the competition perhaps?

sittingonabeach · 06/11/2025 09:19

Surely shouldn't it be everything in moderation. If you are mainly eating a carnivore diet, it might help with muscle mass, but surely it has a detrimental impact on your bowels (and anyone else around you, wouldn't want to use the staff loo after you!) and lead to different health issues.

WithIcePlease · 06/11/2025 09:21

Vanity is an interesting one.
Buying make up, buying stylish clothes, how to dress to disguise various problems with shape - all fine on MN.
Going to the gym and the way of eating that goes with it - a no no

WithIcePlease · 06/11/2025 09:25

Re bowel cancer and meat
The research is done on total meat consumption. It is not nuanced at all.
Something like 48% of meat in the US is ultra processed - so in burgers, fast food, preserved meats etc
This is very different from unprocessed meat.

Research I believe is ongoing

My bowels are fine thanks as I eat so much veg

Bowel cancer rates have increased dramatically. Is there a blue zone of longevity anywhere in the world where the secret is eating massive quantities of animal product? I fear for the bowels and kidneys of people who eat this way. I think it's a ticking time bomb of disease.

But research indicates increased risk of bowel cancer from both red meat and processed meat.

Foul bowels now, and a likely future of bowel cancer.

And possibly thyroid issues. Carbs are essential for the manufacture of thyroid hormones.

the real question is how many ovens do you have!! This is the set up I need in my future 😂

Chickens on one shelf
roasties on the next -two batches cooked on separate shelves earlier that day then back in all jumbled in one huge tray to finish off and carry on crisping up albeit at a lower temp
cauli cheese at bottom

Gammon in slow cooker
chipolatas airfryer
then Yorkies (pre bought as so many of us-) in airfryer after for a few mins while getting all the food out and stick them on table last
everything else on hob lol

There are carbs in vegetables though? Obviously carrots etc but broccoli has carbs as do tomatoes. Mainly fibre rather than starch

Protein has essential amino acids. There is no such thing as an essential carbohydrate.

Really sorry if someone up-thread already posted this but ... I'll just leave this here. 😂

That's a fair question. The answer is that in that sport you are competing to improve your own time rather than against other people - so for example he wouldn't care if he finished 10th or 100th, but he would care about his times getting quicker. Is that vanity? I don't think so, if you're not constantly trying to improve, you're probably not a big believer in competitive sport and the training that goes with it

Serpentstooth · 06/11/2025 09:54

He's a guest and bloody rude. I'd ignore any special requests. If they arrive with their own meal in a plastic box,so much the better. You needn't ask them again. Sauce!

tinymoon · 06/11/2025 10:00

A professional sportsperson came to my in-laws’ family dinner as a guest recently. I assume he has an extremely strict diet to be able to compete professionally. Not one demand was made to the host about what he was going to eat. Because he and his girlfriend have basic manners.
