Am I a CF to go to the takeaway and ask for a discount?

So I’m trying to lose weight. Have done quite well, 23 pounds down. One of my most favourite meals is chicken marinated in tandoori spices cooked on the bbq with a lovely salad. I am OBSESSED with eating this salad with a sauce that comes from our local Lebanese takeaway. It cost £4 for a tiny little pot. Would I be really cheeky to go into the shop and ask if they can do be a much larger container for a fair amount. It’s a tomato based sauce so not expensive to produce. To get the amount I would need we’re talking it costing maybe three figures. I’m not joking. That’s how small the pots are. I don’t think there’s any harm in asking?

Obviously I don’t want to be rude or offensive either. If it wasn’t SO expensive of course the idea of haggling would not even enter my mind and I would just pay the going rate

What @MrsResponder said.
If the people running it are Lebanese OP, they will be far more skilled than you in the art of haggling! 😉

Coming over here with their foreign ways/haggling and seducing Mumsnetters with delicious sauces and spices. Somebody should stop it!!!

Shefliesonherownwings · 06/11/2025 20:16

How many times a week are you making this meal? If a little goes a long way then why can’t you just buy the £4.00 pot when you make it, isn’t that enough for your salad?

Clape · 05/11/2025 10:20

I’ve tried a couple of times and they have been foul. The sauce genuinely makes me feel like I’m getting a takeaway.

Can't you ask them for their recipe?

ParkMaiden · 06/11/2025 20:28

FYI if it’s delicious and from a restaurant/ takeaway it’s likely to be very calorie dense so could spoil your diet.

Beerpink · 06/11/2025 20:49

Some sauces are secret recipes. They might be worried you’re trying to get the recipe.

Sorry, could you point out where the OP suggested they were a small child, unaware of how diets or calories work?

Sennelier1 · 06/11/2025 21:06

You posted a picture of a (similar?) sauce, the caption says it's shatta. Shatta is the word in the Arabic world for hot-sauce. I make my own (with homegrown peppers) using the recipe of the famous Palestine cook Sami Tamimi, collegue of Ottolenghi. It's easy to find and easy to make

Laurmolonlabe · 06/11/2025 21:34

I have never known a takeaway that is open for haggling- if a sauce is £4 for a small pot there will be a reason. You could ask if they will sell you a much larger quantity for a reduced amount, but I don't rate your chances.

This is what I want to know

£4 for a pot of sauce really isn’t that bad. Think of it like a weekly Costa

but not sure why @Clape needs £100 worth or 25 pots of it

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/11/2025 17:43

so @Clape adding all you said into chat gp this is their answer

Ahhh perfect — that sounds like Shatta (Lebanese/Palestinian chili sauce).
This is the spicy, smoky, chunky red sauce they serve with grilled chicken & shawarma.

Name of the sauce:

Shatta (شَطّة)

Typical Ingredients:

  • Fresh red chillies
  • Garlic
  • Salt
  • Lemon juice
  • Olive oil
  • Tomato paste or roasted red peppers (for body)
  • Sometimes cumin or smoked paprika for that smoky flavour

No mayo, no yogurt, no sweetness.

What it tastes like:

  • Spicy (but not overwhelming)
  • Tangy (from lemon)
  • Savoury and slightly smoky
  • Chunky texture from hand chopping or pulsing, not blending smooth

Quick “Takeaway-Style” Recipe (very close to the one served with Lebanese chicken):

Ingredients:

  • 6–8 red chillies (or 3 chillies + 1 roasted red pepper for milder)
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika (for the smokiness you mentioned)
  • ½ tsp ground cumin
  • 1–2 tbsp tomato paste
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 2–3 tbsp olive oil
  • Pinch of salt

Method:

  1. Finely chop the chillies and garlic by hand (or pulse very quickly — don’t blend smooth).
  2. Stir in the smoked paprika, cumin, salt and tomato paste.
  3. Add lemon juice and olive oil to loosen to a spoonable texture.
  4. Taste → adjust salt / lemon / heat.

It keeps for 1–2 weeks in the fridge.

I don't know anything about the detail of Lebanese food, but thought of paprika from what the OP said and that sounds like a good recipe to make a delicious sauce so definitely worth the OP trying that one.

I do wonder what was wrong with what the OP has tried to make herself so far to make it 'foul'.

As you aren't exactly a big customer, asking for a discount is rather rude, and more likely to be turned down. There isn't a big margin on restaurant food like this, so please don't think they are raking it in on small pots of sauce. The sauce also takes time to prepare, create and of course the costs of ingredients and staff.
Far better to ask if they are able to sell you a much larger pot, and just what would their best price be? Just be prepared for a negative answer, or what feels expensive to you price.
No harm in asking though.

Agree

Roobarbtwo · 06/11/2025 22:49

This is just a nonsense. Like who goes into their local takeaway asking for huge tubs of a sauce they like. Completely absurd.

oldmoaner · 07/11/2025 08:27

I wouldn't ask for a discount id ask how much it would cost for a larger amount and I definitely wouldn't ask if there were other customers in the shop, if someone has 6 family members they. Could say well she's getting more for her money so can I have 6 portions for the price of 4. It works all ways. If you spend a lot of money there anyway why would they want to lose money by selling for less?

Keeperofcalendar · 07/11/2025 08:37

Just ask for extra pots of sauce
They will either charge or give for free if you are a regular customer

Kuretake · 07/11/2025 08:42

I'd keep trying the recipe I think.

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/11/2025 12:25

@Clape what was the recipe you made ?

Drowned in a giant vat of Lebanese tomato sauce, clearly.

Keytoken · 07/11/2025 12:46

If you ask very nicely it's possible they'd give you the recipe.

Or ask what it would cost to buy the sauce alone in bulk. Would it keep though?

I can’t heart this as on the app

Blades2 · 07/11/2025 14:43

It’s a small leb place, just pay what they want, you are on a diet so I assume not spending as much as usual in your favourite place.

you asked a question, lots have given you alternatives, but you still want your discount.

Tarkan · 07/11/2025 15:40

I worked in a Chinese takeaway as a teenager and people would do this sort of thing all the time. The menu only had tubs of sweet and sour, curry or gravy on the menu for the sauces but if someone came in to ask if they could do a sauce from a specific meal they’d happily do that for them.

And those definitely weren’t the weirdest requests. People would ask for deliveries of nothing but dozens of cans of juice, we had one woman who would request a banana alongside her meal, people would phone up and ask if the delivery drivers could bring cigarettes or milk from the shop beside us with their takeaway delivery. And that’s before all the different requests for adding or removing things from specific dishes.

If the sauce really is that good it’s entirely possible they’ve already had someone asking for a big tub of it already.

I do, lots of people do. My sister says it is pretty common - she's worked for two local chinese takeaways, kebab shop and several pizza places, now works for a pizza/kebab shop.

I get pizza dough from there (you have to turn up as they're making the dough at around 5pm, we always offer to pay, he never ever takes money for it though!) - people buy big batches of their bbq pizza sauce too.

The previous kebab shop would sell various pots of their home made sauces. An indian takeaway I use sells me a big pot of their base curry sauce to freeze.

It is not remotely absurd, their thinking is better to sell me something or keep me a faithful customer than.. not!

Nowhere where I live would do this for a customer - fine if they sell it but they wouldn't do anything for a customer to order
