Am I a CF to go to the takeaway and ask for a discount?

So I’m trying to lose weight. Have done quite well, 23 pounds down. One of my most favourite meals is chicken marinated in tandoori spices cooked on the bbq with a lovely salad. I am OBSESSED with eating this salad with a sauce that comes from our local Lebanese takeaway. It cost £4 for a tiny little pot. Would I be really cheeky to go into the shop and ask if they can do be a much larger container for a fair amount. It’s a tomato based sauce so not expensive to produce. To get the amount I would need we’re talking it costing maybe three figures. I’m not joking. That’s how small the pots are. I don’t think there’s any harm in asking?

Obviously I don’t want to be rude or offensive either. If it wasn’t SO expensive of course the idea of haggling would not even enter my mind and I would just pay the going rate

If it's just tomato and onions, it depends on whether they blitz it in a blender / food processor or whether use something like a pestle and mortar.

I have tried but get nothing even remotely close.

It looks exactly like the red sauce

Rather than starting off asking for a discount I would start by asking how much it would be if they were to be able to make you a big pot and take it from there.

I thought the OP was making her own chicken and salad and just getting the sauce from the takeaway?

Yes that’s the plan. I’m trying to find a way to carry on enjoying healthy eating. I’m reaching diet fatigue and just though how gorgeous it would be to have this meal a few times a week. I can’t justify ordering the salad from the takeaway 3x a week. So thought getting the sauce in would be a good compromise.

They may not want to sell it to you at all, discounted or otherwise, as this appears to be what lifts standard grilled meat into something people buy from them. Not sure I'd be facilitating my customers to no longer want my services because they could stick my sauce on their own grilled meat. Or salad or whatever.

Quite often a larger tub isn't proportionally more expensive than an individual portion anyway, eg family size with 4 times as much costs 1.5 to 2 x more.

Yup this is what I meant. I wouldn’t say “please give me a discount”

OP posts:
BunnyLake · 06/11/2025 10:19

Just ask if they can do it in a bigger container and how much would it cost? And take it from there. I’m not sure what’s in it for them to give you a discount though?

aneelli · 05/11/2025 10:25

u can only ask. I’m intrigued as to what kind of sauce it is.
many years ago I asked McDonalds if I could just get a tub of tartare sauce on the side. They refused 🤣 saying they aren’t allowed to sell the sauce by itself

They probably would love to sell you a pot but the biggest hurdle would be the actual transaction as I guarantee that does not appear on the POS till so they can’t process the request. Computer says no

I thought you said you were trying to lose weight? A salad isnt automaticaly slimming becuase it a salad, salad dressing is very sugary, if you smother your salad with it, it's basically like eating salad with syrup on it which will make you gain weight.

Edited

It's Lebanese tomato and onion based, it's unlikely to be sugary.

You know there are many, many different types of salad dressing?

If you genuinely think salad dressing is 'sugary,' then you need to branch out a bit.

I make a similar-sounding dressing by blistering small, fruity chillis before pounding/blending them with the other ingredients. It gives a deep, smoky, sweet/savoury flavour.

I still remember arguing with my DC that there was no way a pot of Domino’s dipping sauce had more calories than a pizza. The ones you order separately rather than the mini ones that come with the pizza. They are 675 calories! So not as much as a pizza but that is a lot. They order two…

But that's probably domino's infamous garlic and herb dip which is mass produced and full of preservatives? Not a house made tomato and onion fresh dip?

elviswhorley · 06/11/2025 11:28

I'm really interested in how it could be considered rude to offer someone 3 figures and complement their sauce making skills?

Genuinely.

(I once asked a Chinese takeaway to sell me an onion on my way home as I'd forgotten it for my recipe. They gave it to me for nothing and laughed at me.)

Seriously, just go in and ask. They won’t be offended, you’re not asking for a freebie and I’m sure would be happy to help and if they can’t they will tell you.

As I say; the Thai place nearby regularly sells me a big tub of their peanut sauce for very little, the tiny dipping pots they sell are normally about £2.20 each and I get the equivalent of about 50 for about £9, they have absolutely no problem doing it - the only time it was a problem was when they ran out of the big tubs to put it in!

ensayers · 06/11/2025 12:05

Id take in an empty tupperware of the size i want filled and just ask them how much they would charge me to fill it up.
Also, i'd go in at a time when they werent so busy. Less chance of them just wanting you to go away with your funny request lol

WhycantBarryswim · 06/11/2025 12:19

absolutely worth an ask, when we go to wagamamas we always get a few tubs of the katsu sauce to take away they normally charge us about £1.

This is because their sauce does cost £1 a pot.

You can buy in Sainsburys.

I hate to burst your bubble but if it's delicious, it's probably mostly olive oil or pureed walnuts or something else highly calorific that will not be compatible with weight loss. Story of my life...

Ha ha - you may well be right

Stallio · 06/11/2025 13:29

Another one who cannot see any CFery in this scenario at all?

"Hi, I love the sauce that you serve with the chicken. Is there any chance I can buy a larger amount of it to use at home?" They'll either say yes or no. Either way, they're hardly going to take offence.

No idea what the discount bit was about, but I think the OP has addressed that.

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 06/11/2025 13:32

Coconutter24 · 05/11/2025 19:40

Of course someone can ask how much something is but OP isn’t wanting to ask ‘how much the whole cake is’ though she’s wanting to ask for a discount, that’s not the same.

A whole cake is often cheaper than buying x number of individual slices (in my not insignificant experience)

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 06/11/2025 13:38

2under2mum · 06/11/2025 07:52

Is this a serious question that you felt the need to ask on a forum seriously hardly a life predicament? Can't you find a recipe 🙄🙄🙄

OP literally says in her second post that she's tried some recipes and they've been foul.

And if only life predicaments were posted on Mumsnet, it would be slim pickings indeed

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 06/11/2025 13:32

Well yes because someone will cut a cake up to sell individual slices to make more profit from the cake

Blappengrap · 06/11/2025 13:45

If you only need to use a bit on your salad then presumably a larger jar would last ages? I would just ask them if you can buy the sauce separately and see what they say. If they don't, ask them if you can buy their salad and sauce separately to the chicken, and explain you'll be in to buy it regularly because you love it so much. They might be happy to do that as it would be regular custom.
