Am I a CF to go to the takeaway and ask for a discount?

So I’m trying to lose weight. Have done quite well, 23 pounds down. One of my most favourite meals is chicken marinated in tandoori spices cooked on the bbq with a lovely salad. I am OBSESSED with eating this salad with a sauce that comes from our local Lebanese takeaway. It cost £4 for a tiny little pot. Would I be really cheeky to go into the shop and ask if they can do be a much larger container for a fair amount. It’s a tomato based sauce so not expensive to produce. To get the amount I would need we’re talking it costing maybe three figures. I’m not joking. That’s how small the pots are. I don’t think there’s any harm in asking?

Obviously I don’t want to be rude or offensive either. If it wasn’t SO expensive of course the idea of haggling would not even enter my mind and I would just pay the going rate

Just ask if they can do you a much bigger pot and what the price would be. If that's too much for you, you could ask politely if they could do it for <insert cheaper price>.

ElectoralControversy · 05/11/2025 18:45

I hate to burst your bubble but if it's delicious, it's probably mostly olive oil or pureed walnuts or something else highly calorific that will not be compatible with weight loss. Story of my life...

Coconutter24 · 05/11/2025 18:48

You can ask but it’s a bit CF. They have a product and its costs £4 I’d just decide how much I needed and how much I wanted to spend on it. You wouldn’t walk into Sainsbury’s or a restaurant and say you only want to pay so much so why is it acceptable to do that to a take away?

Radiatorvalves · 05/11/2025 11:21

Can’t you ask the takeaway for their recipe?

No 😂😂

OP, just go in and ask how much for a large pot. They'll definitely do it a bit cheaper :)

It’s £23 a pop. I would eat after more salads and much more happily with the sauce.

Do you see how this is a win for you and a lose for them?

You could absolutely walk into a restaurant which sells cake by the slice, and ask what the price of a whole cake would be.

They're in the business of selling cake. They don't have to provide the plates, service, washing up etc - they might be delighted to shift a whole cake with almost zero overheads, and can give you a whacking discount while still make a healthy profit. Or, not.

Just ask politely and be prepared to take no for an answer.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 05/11/2025 19:12

Just go in and ask them. I regularly go into our local Thai and buy a big pot of their satay sauce that they sell in tiny dipping pots for a decent price, they're not bothered at all.

cramptramp · 05/11/2025 18:20

Of course you can’t ask for a discount. Eat it less often and save money.

Of course you can, they can say no but there's no reason wy you can't ask

I thought you said you were trying to lose weight? A salad isnt automaticaly slimming becuase it a salad, salad dressing is very sugary, if you smother your salad with it, it's basically like eating salad with syrup on it which will make you gain weight.

"Syrup" isn't automatically fattening any more than salad is automatically slimming.

Credit OP with some common sense.

A basic salad dressing is oil and vinegar. Nothing sugary about it 😂

Of course someone can ask how much something is but OP isn’t wanting to ask ‘how much the whole cake is’ though she’s wanting to ask for a discount, that’s not the same.

I think it is asking the same question, phrased in a way that is polite and free of presumption - in the neurotypical world anyway!

I don’t think she’s asking for a discount, it’s asking to bulk buy something they make. In my family we have a fish and chip shop and a Chinese takeaway. People do buy the tartare sauce and capital sauce to have at home.

Exactly what I was thinking and also explains the cost.

fivebyfivefaith · 05/11/2025 20:23

You can only ask
i told a takeaway I really liked the pickles they put on their burger ones
”happy birthday” I got when I ordered on my birthday along with a huge catering size jar of them

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/11/2025 20:32

intrigued what the Tom sauce is

my kebeb shops sells the best burger sauce and think it’s £2.50 a small pot

no Other burger sauce is as a nice

you say it would cost 3 figures so £100
+

so you want 25 pots of this sauce roughly ?

do you eat is daily ? £4 a day is the same as a take away coffee and if you want it then you may get a small discount

my motto

dont ask don’t get

tho they may say no

muddyford · 05/11/2025 20:34

Ask for the recipe.

Floundering66 · 05/11/2025 21:22

Worth a shot! My friend is Lebanese and haggles for everything - he can’t understand why I wouldn’t ask for a better price. Also the restaurant might take it as a compliment and be happy to do a deal for you.

EnjoyingTheArmoire · 05/11/2025 21:29

I don't understand what you're planning to do with it?

If they make it in house then it may not be suitable for freezing, so you may have to use it in a few days. How is that helping you?

Glitterballofdreams · 05/11/2025 21:33

most takeaway sauces are made on the day, and would only last a couple of days at the most in a fridge. I’d try and make a pot last for a few days, just cut down on it. Not many takeout sauces are low in Cals.

She’s planning on painting her walls with it 🙄

Bjorkdidit · 06/11/2025 04:03

You say the sauce is tomato based, but what is it called and what does it taste like apart from tomato? Does it appear fresh or is it more like ketchup?

People who are more knowledgeable about food might be able to hhelp with a recipe as a lot of online recipes aren't very good.

Or do you have a Middle Eastern grocers nearby where you might be able to buy it.

But I think its fine to ask them for a price for a larger amount, they aren't forced to offer a price and you don't have to accept if they want too much for it.

But if you do buy or make bulk quantities it will almost certainly freeze fine in little containers (or freeze in ice cube trays and then move to a bigger bag or tub) unlessit has big chunks of fresh tomato in.

I freeze things like this all the time eg if it comes in a large tub or buy things that are reduced. It's only like freezing pasta sauce, hummus or similar.
