Am I a CF to go to the takeaway and ask for a discount?

So I’m trying to lose weight. Have done quite well, 23 pounds down. One of my most favourite meals is chicken marinated in tandoori spices cooked on the bbq with a lovely salad. I am OBSESSED with eating this salad with a sauce that comes from our local Lebanese takeaway. It cost £4 for a tiny little pot. Would I be really cheeky to go into the shop and ask if they can do be a much larger container for a fair amount. It’s a tomato based sauce so not expensive to produce. To get the amount I would need we’re talking it costing maybe three figures. I’m not joking. That’s how small the pots are. I don’t think there’s any harm in asking?

Obviously I don’t want to be rude or offensive either. If it wasn’t SO expensive of course the idea of haggling would not even enter my mind and I would just pay the going rate

Agreeing with the people who say don’t ask for a discount, just ask if they offer a larger portion.

JustGoClickLikeALightSwitch · 06/11/2025 05:10

FGS what is the sauce??

Yamamm · 06/11/2025 05:43

I still remember arguing with my DC that there was no way a pot of Domino’s dipping sauce had more calories than a pizza. The ones you order separately rather than the mini ones that come with the pizza. They are 675 calories! So not as much as a pizza but that is a lot. They order two…

Find out what it's called and order it online from the same suppliers they use.

spoonbillstretford · 06/11/2025 06:09

Ask them where they get their sauce, it may not be made on site.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 06/11/2025 06:09

Go to a Lebanese grocery. It's very possible they but it from their wholesaler.

CrowMate · 06/11/2025 06:20

My concern would be that if it’s all fresh, you wouldn’t be able to eat three figures worth before it went off, so it would be a waste of money.

reversingdumptruckwithnotyreson · 06/11/2025 06:27

Like most have said, I’d ask if it’s possible to buy a bigger pot and go from there.

IMO asking for a discount or for the recipe is absolutely CF behaviour. Why would you expect a restaurant/takeaway to give away their recipe so the customer can make it at home and buy less from them?

@aneelli sorry to derail but I love this McDs tartare sauce recipie. The dill pickle I use is M&S House Burger Relish https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/241392/mcdonalds-tartar-sauce-copycat/

Thanks for that, I like tartare sauce and don't have enough of it, will give that a go.

Lilyowl · 06/11/2025 06:56

Maybe just ask how much they would charge for a bigger portion? I'm sure they would also think it was unreasonable to charge a large amount for a meal sized portion.

I thought you said you were trying to lose weight? A salad isnt automaticaly slimming becuase it a salad, salad dressing is very sugary, if you smother your salad with it, it's basically like eating salad with syrup on it which will make you gain weight.

Edited

She’s lost weight already, 23lb. She know’s what she’s doing.

Why you think all salad dressing is sugar, I’ve no idea.

OP, I’d ask!

I missed the bit where it was £££ I only saw £23 for the meal?

N27 · 06/11/2025 07:15

I put yabu not for your intentions but because of the way you phrased it. You have absolutely no idea whether it is expensive to produce or not. Nor to dictate to them what a “reasonable amount” should be for their products.

There will naturally be savings based on larger quantities as they’re not having to pay for all the pots etc so there’s no harm in asking for a price for buying a larger quantity

Alondra · 06/11/2025 07:19

I don't see the problem in asking. They are a food business and you want a salad in their menu in a bigger size and paying for it. Shouldn't be a problem.

And no, you are not a CF for asking a larger side dish and paying it.

PastaAllaNorma · 05/11/2025 10:32

Is it shatta? The chilli one? Because that's pretty faffy to do and involves lactic fermentation. You can buy jars of it at specialist suppliers online, and Ottolenghi sell it as well.

Thank you for this! I make a version of this but didn’t know there was an Ottolenghi recipe online.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 06/11/2025 07:27

I think you can ask if they do a large pot and what their price is l.

Would you be putting a tomato based sauce meant for chicken on the salad? That seems a bit strange to me!

The chicken probably isn’t adding a lot of calories though, the calories will be in the sauce. So you might just want to have chicken with it!

Ineffable23 · 05/11/2025 10:30

I would approach it as "hi, I would like to buy 500ml (or whatever) of this sauce from you, obviously that's not on your menu! How much would it be?" And then negotiate from there, rather than asking for it directly as a discount.

It's a perfectly reasonable request, especially as you are a regular customer, and this approach sounds good.

Of course, they might not be able to offer any discount for the bulk purchase, but you'd have to accept that with good grace.

I completely get what you mean about the sauce making the salad. I used to love Reggae Reggae Tomato Ketchup on a salad, but it disappeared from the shelves. I tried to replicate it by adding normal Reggae Reggae to normal ketchup, but it wasn't the same.

Addictedtohotbaths · 06/11/2025 07:41

Get a part time job there and learn the recipe and then start to make it yourself

nosleepforme · 06/11/2025 07:45

Very cheeky!

2under2mum · 06/11/2025 07:52

Is this a serious question that you felt the need to ask on a forum seriously hardly a life predicament? Can't you find a recipe 🙄🙄🙄

Take a container and just ask “Would it be possible to purchase this quantity of sauce, and if so, what would be the price?”

It’s no big deal.
