In the uk now?

I’m British but live in another European country, I want to move back but Dh is adamant it’s too dangerous and wouldn’t be the best for Dd
All I keep seeing on my Ig is all these attacks and frightening things, is this realistic where you are??
I am seeing all of Europe is becoming more dangerous, including where we are and it makes me worried

For some reason I’m developing a bit of anxiety about this, so want honest answers if possible 🙏

It depends where you are moving to. Our area hasn't changed in the 30 years I've lived here. Maybe the traffic is a bit heavier.
Do you have family here? What do they feel about living here? I'd advise you to do a bit of research on the area you want to move to.
Don't let DH control your future.

This......
Where I live (growing city close to the recent train knife attack) I have noticed a decline since moving here 20 years ago (cuts , austerity etc)
Where my sister lives ( home counties ) and where my parents live (Dorset) far less change / decline
Depends where you want to live.
Agree about paying for private healthcare if you can.
Depends where you are moving from and how bad that is
Unsure that alternative European countries are better (if you would qualify to stay etc)

Magnoliasunrise · 05/11/2025 14:05

SW London here, - everywhere has issues but I wouldn't say it is "dangerous". I'm quite happy walking round and have never felt unsafe.

Miniaturemom · 05/11/2025 14:11

I’m really pissed off with the UK right now, but don’t feel it’s unsafe at all. I am lucky to live in a nice town, I imagine that makes a big difference, same as in any country.

JudgeJ · 05/11/2025 14:13

XWKD · 05/11/2025 09:57

It's not dangerous.

The media has no interest in safe places, no click value, too boring. It's the same with any topic you choose and in every country, Shakespeare nailed it 'the evil that men do lives on, the good is oft interred with their heart', I used to tell my pupils this, it's hard to lose a bad reputation.

Phobiaphobic · 05/11/2025 14:14

The good news is there's plenty of vape shops and Turkish barbers on every UK high street. Makes life so much easier.

dottiedodah · 05/11/2025 14:15

Well we live in SC and it feels very safe here.No where it is perfect, and there will be problems in any country. I do think the UK seems to be being "talked down" ATM .Maybe because of our rather colonial past or other reasons I dont know .An episode of "Escape to the Country " yesterday .featured a lady living in Canada 20 years ,desperate to come back to England . We have RL in Australia and its a mixed bag there as well

Of course it isn’t more dangerous! Where does your husband get his information from? He needs better sources!

clamshell24 · 05/11/2025 14:24

No. I live in an inner city and while there's a shooting or stabbing fairly often (drugs/gangs) it doesn't impact us at all. There's a ridiculous amount of disinformation and inflammatory rhetoric going around.

2GreatFatSquirrels · 05/11/2025 14:27

I haven’t seen any escalation of violence or threat in my area or life. Whether statistically there is, I couldn’t say. People are certainly moodier and feeling the pinch. There is increased raicism (I haven’t seen it but I am white and the rallies and flags show it I think).

Icannoteven · 05/11/2025 14:27

In my experience, yes. I live in a city that has had a massive rise in knife crime and has an absolutely useless police force, terrible secondary schools and a major drug problem.

Even the place I am originally from - previously a relatively quiet but very deprived welsh village - now has a knife crime and drug epidemic.

of course, these are just two places in the country. There may be some lovely places in the UK that aren’t affected by these issues. There are some systematic issues effecting the country as a whole though.

Healthcare in this country has absolutely crumbled and we are dealing with the fall out from that in our schools and workplaces, even if we aren’t suffering ourselves. Wages are a complete joke and food prices are sky high. People in general seem a lot more stressed and insular than they did maybe a decade ago.

BlueBearGreenBear · 05/11/2025 14:28

If I didn't watch the news I wouldn't have a clue about anything going on, all feels safe in my village.
If I didn't come on mumsnet I wouldn't worry about what the government are doing.
Personally I like living here, and the beautiful parts are still beautiful.

HeadNorth · 05/11/2025 14:32

I live in a village - biggest local crime is some youths taking eggs from a honesty box & not paying. They were traced by local busybodies and shamed by the community into parting with the requisite £2. So yeah, I feel pretty safe Grin

nixon1976 · 05/11/2025 14:34

Where do you get this information from? There are many problems here at the moment but it is no more dangerous than any country in Europe or beyond. There was a comment on here the other day saying how dangerous they thought Sydney and Melbourne had become. Rural Wales obviously less 'dangerous' than certain parts of a big city, but I personally have not seen any difference over the past 30 in my part of London.

Chocolateismylovelife · 05/11/2025 14:36

If I’m to believe social media such as X then yes it’s in absolute ruin BUT that is not the reality. I live in London and have family and friends all over the city. What I have noticed is high cost of living reflected in all areas as cash strapped authorities and businesses can no longer clear up graffiti and litter, schools lacking funding, people have less money so jump through tube barriers and yes I see the occasional shop lifter. I just popped to my local high street and many shops have closed down and been replaced by discount stores, and takeaways

The multiculturalism that media turn into such a negative is nothing like I see in real life but I have noticed that my friends are becoming more suspicious of ethnic minorities due to their portrayal in the media. This is a big problem as we can’t live our lives living with suspicion and fear.

Politicians and media need to be held accountable for the division being caused for political gain.

I live in Manchester and won't get public transport anymore. I also won't go to Manchester city centre on the weekends or the Trafford Centre.
Several people I know have been victims of violent crimes in the last 2 years. I don't feel safe here.

I work in Manchester. My views on it vary from 'gritty northern Powerhouse' to 'grubby dangerous shithole'. I very much have the shithole vibe at the moment

Idstillratherbepaddleboarding · 05/11/2025 14:39

Well I’ve recently witnessed a machete attack at work and a colleague was stabbed and very nearly killed. Where I live feels safe though. The COL is insane, the NHS is fucked along with all other public services, and they’re probably about to raise our taxes, so I wouldn’t recommend it TBH.

Marchitectmummy · 05/11/2025 14:40

Depends where you are looking to move back to and how long you have been gone. A nice Yorkshire village is similar to it's always been, however you may find a town such as Bradford or city such as Birmingham quite different with more deprivation.

Phobiaphobic · 05/11/2025 14:14

Especially if you want to launder money or get drugs

This has a nice coloured map UK okay - could be better but many places worse.

Plus within UK and image most other counrties it will be highly patchy.

But I do think many areas espailly town centers do feel run down to 12-20 years ago - potholes are a huge issue in current city - and they weren't 10 years ago.

Crime Rate by Country 2025

It is the news. International news constantly shows the negative things about the UK.

Top story recently about the UK is the mass stabbing of people on the train in England.

The international news depicts the UK as a gang ridden murderous place, with people getting shot and stabbed every week.

This does happen, but the news never reports on the good things that happen

JustSawJohnny · 05/11/2025 14:41

I've never seen an issue, anywhere.

Nope, love it where I live. Can pretty much guarantee there are scary dangerous parts of your country showing up on someone else’s IG feed.

Marchitectmummy · 05/11/2025 14:44

TiredofLDN · 05/11/2025 11:19

It’s not dangerous, but it is depressing.

I don’t see violence etc where I live, and my very local community is lovely but in my wider city I do see an awful lot of deprivation and deterioration- from roads not being swept, litter etc, through to high levels of homelessness and lots of drug/alcohol use in the street. these people aren’t dangerous though. I just feel gutted for them that that’s life.

More generally the tone of social discourse is vile. Racism definitely feels like it’s becoming acceptable again. Lots of misplaced rage amongst the middle and working class directed at each other rather than the people it should be aimed at which has horrible echoes of other times in history that ended in horrific atrocities. Lots of people looking at the economic and social challenges - and frankly exhausted after 15 years of austerity, Brexit and covid - are turning inward, rather than coming together to find ways to lift each other up.

I wouldn’t move here. In fact I’d love to get out. It’s a shame Brexit put paid to freedom of movement (though the conspiracy theorist in me wonders now if that wasn’t really about keeping us in, rather than keeping people out….)

You are still able to move to another country. If it's something you want find the country you want to move to and look into the Visa requirements.
