In the uk now?

I’m British but live in another European country, I want to move back but Dh is adamant it’s too dangerous and wouldn’t be the best for Dd
All I keep seeing on my Ig is all these attacks and frightening things, is this realistic where you are??
I am seeing all of Europe is becoming more dangerous, including where we are and it makes me worried

For some reason I’m developing a bit of anxiety about this, so want honest answers if possible 🙏

It's not dangerous.

This, only the worst rare occurrence makes the news.

London is where you're most likely going to be the victim of a violent crime

As it happens, that's wrong.
National rate of recorded 'violence with injury' offences across England and Wales (in the 12 months up to March 2025): 31.88 per 1000 people
Rate in London: 26.40 per 1000.

Violent crime leading to injury falling in every London borough

The number of violent crimes leading to injury reduced in all 32 boroughs in the last 12 months, with almost 9,000 fewer offences across the capital, new figures from the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime reveal.

I really started to think about this before posting. I do honestly feel safe even though it's in an area that's a bit rough around the edges.

That being said, and it could just be my imagination, but I do feel the slight under current of tension in the air. Like people are taking it for now but are starting to get annoyed that things just aren't working any more. Everything costs more, life is a struggle, there seems less point in trying or working hard.

I live in a great area with wonderful neighbours which really does help.

I don't think it's your imagination...

Wishmyhousewasbigger · 05/11/2025 17:17

I live in Southwest London, use public transport a lot, happy to be out at night, and I'm 77! We have good health care here. I don't understand why people think everyone is truthful on social media

Do you have stats for that?

I see this is your first ever post on MN, OP. I’m sure all your concerns are entirely legitimate and above board but it’s interesting that you’ve picked this forum to air them, having never posted here before.

Not first time posting, name change. Back from work and halfway through reading them
all. Have to say I’m hugely relieved! It was worrying and depressing me to think there was no chance of coming back. I don’t go on X/Twitter, it’s on Instagram, I don’t follow the pages, my feed is usually music, kids things, memes, fashion, but recently I’ve noticed it creeping in more and last night was just one after another showing attacks and really quite disturbing things. Have to say it was other parts of Europe too, but uk was particularly bad. I did start to click on the top and say for it to not show me these, but went to bed feeing really anxious

Disturbia81 · 05/11/2025 17:32

It’s very safe, these occurrences are few and far between. Me, friends, family have never been affected by any violence etc

Celestialmoods · 05/11/2025 17:35

It’s not dangerous but it is a bit shit. If where you are is good and has decent public services, you should probably stay put.

Livelovebehappy · 05/11/2025 17:49

I love the UK. Just need another government in power, the NHS sorting out, immigration numbers reduced and then near perfect……Even love the seasons with a mixture of sunshine and cold.

Livelovebehappy · 05/11/2025 17:54

Cinnamon77 · 05/11/2025 16:52

It obviously depends where in the UK. Some parts are worse than others. Avoid London and you should be OK.

But why would you want to when we have people like Lammy in charge?

I think with London it’s the level of violence. More likely to be stabbed - knife crime in London is pretty high.

As opposed to the US where the thug will have legally purchased a rapid fire gun and bought his ammunition in Walmart. know where I'd rather live.

Apologies, I got the stats wrong - those are for 'violent crime'. I thought they sounded a bit high.
'Violence with injury' rates are lower. London still shows up as a bit safer compared to the rest of the country though!
"Londoners are less likely (7.3 offences per 1,000 population) to be a victim of violence with injury than across the rest of England & Wales (8.5 offences per 1000 population)."
Can't see overall rates for knife crime specifically but it says rates have gone down.

More likely to be stabbed that what?

Not be stabbed?

I live in a village - biggest local crime is some youths taking eggs from a honesty box & not paying. They were traced by local busybodies and shamed by the community into parting with the requisite £2. So yeah, I feel pretty safe Grin

Wow, where is this?! I’m going 😅

I’ve lived in Australia, America, and the UK.

The UK is by far the safest country of those three. British muddling along makes it a comfortable easy-going place.

V surprised, thought it would be Australia?!

I live right in the centre of a small city in SE England. I feel very safe.

I think you need to stop getting your news though IG algorithms.

Well let's just say you might be hit on the back of the head up North. Whereas a knife is usually the weapon of choice in London....

Dancingsquirrels · 05/11/2025 19:21

Surely it depends where you live now and where you might move to?

Where I live, food prices have increased and pavements have deteriorated. I think post Brexit and post Covid, it would be naive to expect everything to be great

But I still feel safe

I live in a village in Perthshire, easy travelling distance south to Edinburgh & Glasgow and north to the Cairngorm national park. I love where I live, I’d never move.

No, it's absolutely fine here, your dh sounds unhinged

TheGrimSmile · 05/11/2025 21:43

This is American right-wing propaganda. I keep reading stuff about how dangerous it is here. What the fuck are they talking about? It's utterly absurd.

Coffeetimeagain · 05/11/2025 19:13

V surprised, thought it would be Australia?!

Goodness, no.

when I lived in Sydney, I was regularly cat-called, followed, avoided sexual assault, but was beaten up in the street (a violent mugging) about 3 doors from where I was living in a suburban street.

Never had that happen anywhere in the UK. Australia was a penal colony, remember!

Gair · 06/11/2025 02:40

I moved back to the UK about 7 years ago, from one of the safest countries in Europe. I feel perfectly safe here (small town in a very rural area, bit deprived), and am not worried about DC safety either (or not more than I would have been in previous 'safe' country).

Before we returned, I was very worried about the education system and the NHS. Schools are a mixed bag, but it has been better than expected. NHS is much worse than I expected. Waiting lists are years long where I am, and some things you need to wait eight years for. It is shocking. However, once you get to see a doctor/consultant etc, I have found them to be very good (at least as good, if not better than in previous country - but speed of access there was lightening fast compared to here).

So, swings and roundabouts. I'd recommend you take everything on social media with a large pinch of salt, or better still not use it at all for news/anything serious.

Says London is the worst for stabbings
I think the stats for violent crimes in the rest of the country above are the pub brawls on a saturday night - my small local town would have a few of them but I can't remember anyone being stabbed

If the stabbings are related to drug crime then they will be mainly in cities
