Aibu to be pissed at how many women here were so scathing and dismissive of those in the past who said we weren’t comfortable with our babies/toddlers/very young children having male carers in a nursery setting or as a nanny etc? We were told condescendingly how ignorant and bigoted we were - i don’t fucking care at how right in you are and superior i still feel the same way www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cze665j2y51o?at_medium=social&at_link_type=web_link&at_format=video&at_link_origin=BBC_Surrey&at_campaign=Social_Flow&at_campaign_type=owned&at_bbc_team=editorial&at_ptr_name=twitter&at_link_id=4FF97A8E-B8A8-11F0-A794-E0B1162F2AD3

You’ll always get male sympathisers on here and trying to justify it by saying “WeLl wOmEn Do It ToO” it’s such backward thinking. Another one is when they say they know a male nursery worker and he’s the sweetest man ever! Men groom whoever’s around them to get to what they want 🙄

Critical thinking isn't your strong point is it . .

LeedsLoiner · 05/11/2025 10:05

I presume the "protect are kidz" brigade are massing at the nursery with England flags to protest about this?
Oh sorry, he's a male white teenager, obviously a wrong 'un but you can't attack and blame whole groups of people based on one person based on one person from that group committing a crime can you?...

Delphiniumandlupins · 05/11/2025 10:05

elviswhorley · 05/11/2025 09:10

Yeah, statistically, I'd not let my child be looked after by a man I didn't know.
Secondly, the girls working there are underpaid, look half conscious, and are simply not that bright and don't really care about your babies.

If I had to put my babies in nursery I'd not have had kids.

Not all nurseries are like that. Also, I'm sure you know that, statistically, your child is much more likely to be harmed by a man you do know, than one you don't.

Chiseltip · 05/11/2025 10:06

Fiftyseven · 05/11/2025 09:39

Men doing jobs that provide individual access to vulnerable children and intimate care, quite possibly not.
Or ensure proper supervision that a male is never on his own with a preverbal child.

So, fathers can't be on their own with their own children?

So because I need to work to not lose my home and to feed my family I shouldn’t have had a child?

Do you understand how upsetting that is to read?

You're just being deliberately obtuse, and you know, it.

GehenSieweiter · 05/11/2025 10:14

Digdongdoo · 05/11/2025 09:37

Men should never be in employed positions where they have unsupervised contact with children. The statistical risk is too great. Good men understand this and won't demand it.

Doctors?

GehenSieweiter · 05/11/2025 10:14

Doctors?

They aren’t alone though they have to have a nurse with them.

Rubbish. I was alone with my male GPs loads of times.

As a child? Being examined?

As a young adult or as a female, yes.

🤨 see I just see that as creepy.

That's very sad you feel like that. And hope you are OK. I can completely understand that people are mistrustful of men.

Obviously not all men are predators. But enough of them are to make us wary as a society of all men.
My Dad is amazing with babies and toddlers, as was my grandad. My DH is too. They are very uncreepy so my main experience is men can be good with little ones.
We have lost a close family member, to rape and murder so have not been untouched by male violence. I do try not let this cloud my judgment on all.men.

Digdongdoo · 05/11/2025 10:24

GehenSieweiter · 05/11/2025 10:14

Doctors?

Yes even doctors. But they aren't often (ever?) unsupervised with small children are they? That wouldn't be usual at all. Please note, that I said unsupervised, not that men should never work with children.

You have to accept that different people have different views.
My feelings were also that I'd only have a child if I didn't have to send them to childcare from a young age, but that doesn't mean you're wrong for viewing it differently.

Adult women are meant to have a chaperone with a male doctor for intimate examinations.

I once declined as the fewer people observing me in that state the better- the doctor insisted and said it's more for my protection than yours.

But then I had already told the doctor that I worked as a solicitor for a living. So he knew he could say that to me, as I would understand from one professional to another. So of course I agreed the chaperone and apologised.

VikaOlson · 05/11/2025 10:30

There have been 3 or 4 paedophiles caught working in nurseries in the last few years, so not exactly a one off.
Paedophiles do seek out roles to access children.

Deadringer · 05/11/2025 10:32

I wouldn't have a male childminder and wouldn't be happy with a male in a creche changing my dc's nappy and I don't give a fuck if anyone has a problem with that.

Thats a bit harsh. When I was doing my childcare training I met lots of bright, motivated women who worked in creches and loved it, they worked there because they loved kids. Its a crying shame that the pay is so poor and they are usually understaffed and over worked.

SwanSong30 · 05/11/2025 10:40

I don’t think refusing to employ males should be a rule but there should be 2:1 required across all personal care tasks involving children for ALL staff - it protects children plus staff. There just isn’t enough funding to allow this.

WhyOhWhyEightyTwo · 05/11/2025 10:42

Venessa George, Nursery worker found guilty of SA and had 124 indecent images of children in her care.
Kate Roughly a nursery worker murdered a 9month old baby in her care.
Lucy Letby, found guilty of murder and attempted murder of 14 babies.
Shall we ban women from working with babies because of these women’s actions?

Another one who can't understand risk....

GingerBeverage · 05/11/2025 10:50

It's interesting that a forum that leans towards women being allowed to choose female providers, keeping males out of female prisons, and preventing males from competing in women's sports because of the risk, is populated by people happy to take on the risk of sexual assault for children.

What is it about children that doesn't inspire the same level of risk awareness?

SleepingStandingUp · 05/11/2025 11:06

Terribly sexist but I'd assume the average 20 year old babysitting strangers for kids, the female would probably have more experience or want to do it for work experience, whereas the male would just do it for the money so I'd pick the female. And of course in there is a lurking fear of strange men, because that's how we have to be in all areas. Would I prefer a male or female taxi driver if I was totally pissed at 2am? Would I rather be followed down alley by a man or a woman?

But what about parents? Men abuse their wives and children statistically more than women do. Do you allow your husband to be alone with your children? Would you let your DB or BIL etc babysit? Do you think all men should be barred from all schools? We have a male caretaker and a male music teacher, is that an unacceptable risk for our school to take?

One female nursery worker 2 decades ago Vs four male nursery workers in the past 4 years.
When men are 3% of the workforce....
