Do you buy anything marketed to men that is just as good, or better than the "womens" version?

We all know women pay more for everything, clothes, beauty, toiletries etc, the pink tax or whatever they call it (cba to look up references and stats, it's a thing).

On that, and because I am a bit more broke than usual this month, what do you feel you save on by buying that isn't the mainstream? I saved £20 on a pair of walking boots last week because I bought the men's ones - am a size 8 which can hard to get in women's shops anyway. I also get men's razors, shaving foam, jumpers and boxer shorts - so much more comfy!

What am I missing? Interested in multivits (currently get one that is designed for women but am wondering if its just the same stuff as men get, maybe with folate added?) and other clothes or better quality things that are made to last.

As for the AIBU - AIBU that in 2025 we should not have to double check prices of the same things against men's products because they know we will pay more even though we earn less?

Not really, but I'm only 5'4 and wear size 4 shoes. I buy some kids stuff though and I've got a lot of hand me downs from my son, who has long outgrown me - I've got enough sports gear, joggers and jackets of his to last me for years.

I'm relieved I'm not the only one getting hand me downs from their children - my son's 11 and not quite tall enough for his old clothes to fit me, but his feet are bigger than mine so I have lots of his old socks and was very happy to borrow his sliders on holiday. And I am thinking carefully about what clothes I get for him now to maximise their second life potential!

Socks and pyjamas

MarmiteyCrumpets · 05/11/2025 08:13

I have clothes from all departments in my wardrobe! If it fits, is well made, has enough freaking pockets (!) and I like it, I don't care whether it's marketed for men, women, boys or girls.

Vates · 05/11/2025 09:01

I am 5' 9 with size 8 feet so prefer men's clothing. It actually fits the length of my body, arms and legs. Men's pajamas are so much more comfortable than the women's ones I have had.

No, do not touch anything "medically" designed for men as they really do have genetically different needs/requirements to women. It's not about adding different things but about different amounts.

I prefer mens razors (Bic), socks, t-shirt, fleeces, trainers, slippers and coats. Not tried their deodorant yet...

I switched to a good old-fashioned doubled edged safety razor a few years ago. It shaves much more neatly and the blade is super cheap to replace - around 3-6p each depending on where you buy. No cartridge or plastic razor will ever compare again.

Men's tight boxers for the wide elastic and general comfort. Do check the crotch gusset though, sometimes there's a seam in the middle where you really don't want one.

Edited

Me too ( safety razor). Blades are a standard size and I bought a pack from the Turkish barbers in town really cheaply . It feels good not to be using plastic disposables and does a way better job.

Are you looking at the vapor gloves? I found the soles wore out disappointingly quickly, particularly on concrete, so i only wear mine in the gym now. My husband's trail gloves have worn out quickly too. The rubber they've used in the vibram soles just ain't that durable.

Yes, the Vapor Gloves in the pale grey/blue. They don't seem to do it the women's any more. But I've been wearing them ( different pairs/colours) for about 15 years and had no problems. I like the Vibram sole. I wear them day in day out. The grey pair I've got now are a couple of years old and still in really good condition but my feet have spread!

am not there yet, but hey there's a silver lining to it I'd not previously considered!

Reading someone elses comments I see now about the divers that it was that women have more subcutaneous body fat than men, so maybe that helps when diving in cold water but not just for existing in a poorly insulated house!

Reading this thread another menopausal change that stands out is shaving. I'm agog at the amount of shaving going on. Since menopause I might shave my legs twice a year and I have no underarm hair.

I've remembered another thing I buy, men's walking trousers - the sort that dry fast with lots of zip pockets. I also have lots of DS1s cast off gym clothing.

Connected1 · 05/11/2025 12:34

Men's bicycle - they are much stronger and sturdier than women's bikes. This was confirmed to me by a worker in a bike shop

I have DS walking trousers from when he went on his last school trip. Nicely lined and very warm with lots of zip pockets! i really enjoy them. Been wearing them now going on about 4yrs.

HorrorAndHaagenDazs · 05/11/2025 13:25

Mens everything apart from jeans / underwear.
Better made, better smelling, and cheaper.

Edit - Im 5'9 with mens size 8/9 feet anyway.

Auburngal · 05/11/2025 15:09

Bloody disgraceful that women’s clothes have a lack of pockets. We don’t need to take our bags out for a walk!

I have to say although I have seen a slight improvement on this, a few more dresses on the market with pockets and leggings for eg, I can't believe this is still an issue so many years after it was first highlighted (was it about 2010 there was a huge hooha about it?). Why do our jeans' pockets not fit mobile phones? Why are women's jeans usually made out of a % elastine rather than proper thick denim? Grrr!

Why do women’s tops have elastane in them? It shows off our lumps n bumps more

Catinabeanbag · 05/11/2025 16:43

Pajamas
Socks (mens thermal ones are way better than womens and actually come up your leg)
Jumpers - if I can get them small enough, they're always warmer.
Dressing gown - again, warmer.
T shirts - always seem to be slightly thicker cotton and better quality (and M&S womens never fit quite right!)
Walking trousers, waterproof coat.

DeanElderberry · 05/11/2025 17:25

Socks, Pyjamas (Dunnes https://www.dunnesstores.com/men/clothing/pyjamas?page=2 )

MagpiePi · 05/11/2025 17:34

Size 9 feet so trainers and socks as apparently women don’t have feet bigger than size 8 and will suffer some kind of mental breakdown if they aren’t coloured pink, purple or pale blue.

Gloves - I have big hands and long fingers, but even men’s are sometimes too short.

I wear a lot of men’s joggers, hoodies and tees but that’s because my adult sons pass them on to me.

JohnTheRevelator · 05/11/2025 17:37

I love the Nivea For Men body, face and shower gel. I picked it up by mistake (didn't have my glasses on!) thinking it was a women's shower gel. Only discovered when I got home what it actually was. I used it anyway, and loved it. Has a nice spicy scent that actually lasts, and although I was a bit sceptical about using it on my hair,it was fine.

Plantsofa · 05/11/2025 17:49

Men’s shirts! Always seem to be better quality and much cheaper. I don’t mind that they button the other side (couldn’t tell you which way women’s are supposed to go anyway).

Dutchhouse14 · 05/11/2025 18:28

I buy mens razors/razor blades.
Much better than the women's versions

AlexisP90 · 05/11/2025 18:57

I only buy mens razors now.

They are better in every way

Womens razors are expensive for 0 reason. Ill never go back

Ponderingwindow · 04/11/2025 20:16

It’s easier to get the stupid moisture strips off of men’s razors. Since I can’t use a razor with one attached I buy men’s.

also a men’s shaving cream is the only allergen free one I have found.

I hate those strips too!!! They make me cut myself.

OSTMusTisNT · 05/11/2025 19:16

Razors and shaving gel as they're cheaper and thermal legging (long John's?) as women's didn't seem to exist in 90's.

maddiemookins16mum · 05/11/2025 19:32

I wear mens joggers, they’re thicker, warmer and £2 per pair cheaper at Asda. Some of my hoodies are also mens.

Auburngal · 05/11/2025 20:45

Most of my Xmas jumpers are men's. As thicker, higher neckline, doesn't have those metallic fibres that irritate my skin and longer in length.

Working for a supermarket which was freezing, December had one slight positive, able to wear Xmas jumpers. We wish we could have January, Feb jumpers too...
