Do you buy anything marketed to men that is just as good, or better than the "womens" version?

We all know women pay more for everything, clothes, beauty, toiletries etc, the pink tax or whatever they call it (cba to look up references and stats, it's a thing).

On that, and because I am a bit more broke than usual this month, what do you feel you save on by buying that isn't the mainstream? I saved £20 on a pair of walking boots last week because I bought the men's ones - am a size 8 which can hard to get in women's shops anyway. I also get men's razors, shaving foam, jumpers and boxer shorts - so much more comfy!

What am I missing? Interested in multivits (currently get one that is designed for women but am wondering if its just the same stuff as men get, maybe with folate added?) and other clothes or better quality things that are made to last.

As for the AIBU - AIBU that in 2025 we should not have to double check prices of the same things against men's products because they know we will pay more even though we earn less?

Men's knitwear. Womens jumpers and cardigans are so poor in quality

Tisfortired · 04/11/2025 23:35

My mum has always used men’s shaving balm as make up primer.

2Rebecca · 04/11/2025 23:37

I use men’s razor and male trainers as I have wide feet. In some shops I prefer men’s Tshirts too

Oh yes, I'm 5ft 9 so love men's jumpers and joggers - they do seem to be better quality and last longer too!

Which deodorants would you suggest, being more fruity and less woody? That's something I haven't thought of!

Men's jumpers tend to be longer than women's jumpers so I often buy them or I wear my late husband's unworn birthday gifts. As I don't like flowery scents, used to love Sandalwood from Body Shop as an everyday cheapy, I like some aftershaves, Obsession is my current favourite, nothing like the scent. Having broad feet I like men's socks as they come further over my ankles.

@DoAWheelie and @rabbitwoman
You've just reminded me that I'm wearing men's glasses.

somethingnewandexciting · 04/11/2025 23:46

I like the tabac scent and have a Miller Harris one that has lasted ages that I use in winter.

I have just seen a set on Amazon with tabac deodorant, aftershave and shower gel for £23 that I am tempted by.

Razors and joggers for slouching around in - womens ones always seem to be cut to fit too tight around the thighs and cheap thin material - mens are slouchier, thicker fabric and better pockets!

Refreshing0 · 05/11/2025 00:28

Jumpers and t-shirts i find them better than womens ones more slack and comfy.

Yup ..ive got a couple of merino /cashmere jumpers winging their way to me from vinted.

Fattitude · 05/11/2025 01:18

I like shave gel in squeezy soft bottles, much better than spray cans which always seem to rust on the bottom and get damp and manky round the nozzle bit. But the women's ones all seem to be cans so I buy men's in the squeezy bottles - I don't mind their butch names.

MarxistMags · 05/11/2025 01:19

@somethingnewandexciting And jumpers and t-shirts tend to be longer which I need as I'm the same height as you. Also woolly socks, scarves, and jackets.

spoonbillstretford · 05/11/2025 01:25

I get men's Nivea roll on if it's on special offer. Smells nice too.

I've had men's chinos from.M&S before - the women's in the same price at the time were all too short as they only came in 29" leg length, and were not as good quality cotton for the same price, plus they were all pastel shades and not navy blue nor black. With the men's I could buy them by waist measurement and inside leg. So they fitted better and were better quality.

Hiking gear - tend to get men's fleece and waterproofs as women's tend to be fashion rather than comfort cut and too tailored. I don't want darts and tailoring in a fleece.

spoonbillstretford · 05/11/2025 01:33

Plus men's clothing is often cut to allow you to have muscly arms and legs and cut to be a relaxed fit, not body-skimming. I'm hardly a body builder but have always done weights and am fairly solid of limb and I can actually get my legs in straight cut trousers.

mathanxiety · 05/11/2025 01:43

Wool socks
Disposable razors
Anti perspirant-deodorant

FullOfMomsense · 05/11/2025 02:34

Deodorant and razors! I cannot stand wearing mens scents but the Deodorant is just so much better. I roll on at 5am and still smell fresh at 10pm after an intense day, even after workouts. Razors are smoother, easier to use and cleaner. Women's razors with the ridiculous plastic shaped heads just get in the way!

I want some cosy joggers, recently bought 'long' from marks and Spencers and they were only just about long enough prior to being washed and dried and I'm not that tall! Any suggestions?

Mens teddy joggers from Sainsburys.... really cosy fleece, wash, 1600 spin and dry in an hour. Really long and pockets... Great for winter wear around the house.

2cubesoficeandasliceoflime · 05/11/2025 06:46

I use "men's" shaving stuff. I use a safety razor and traditional soap and brush. There is a brand of shaving soap that charges £11 for standard shaving soap and then £13 for what seems to be exactly the same product in different packaging "for girls". Ive let the side down somewhat though and bought a razor handle based on the colour (which was in the women's section- sorry!). At least they havent tried to repackaged the blades based on gender.

2cubesoficeandasliceoflime · 05/11/2025 06:49

My tall daughter lives in clothes from the men's section. She's tall and likes practical stuff and complains about all lack of real pockets in women's clothing.

She also prefers men's deodorants because they tend to gave more neutral scents.

Devilsmommy · 05/11/2025 06:59

Pyjamas. I'm not even that tall at 5'7 but women's ones are always ankle swingers. Mens pjs are better. And yes to the joggers/sweats. Mens are way better quality for some reason

M&S do a nice sandalwood perfume. It’s £16 for two bottles( one travel sized) and it’s so good.

Auburngal · 05/11/2025 07:03

Men’s shorts. Need be elasticated waist as button/flies doesn’t fit well.

The men’s short shorts go on the knee. Women’s are too short for me and ride up

I can't get the shoes I want in women's (Merrell barefoot trainers) so I was wondering about getting them in the men's. This thread has given me hope! They look the same but I imagine they'll just be a bit wider.

Are you looking at the vapor gloves? I found the soles wore out disappointingly quickly, particularly on concrete, so i only wear mine in the gym now. My husband's trail gloves have worn out quickly too. The rubber they've used in the vibram soles just ain't that durable.

PersephoneParlormaid · 05/11/2025 07:07

I bought men’s ASICS trainers as they were so much cheaper, but I do find that my foot slides forward, so had to buy an insole. Although women’s are narrower I will go back to them, as they actually hold my foot better.
I now always buy men’s socks, much better quality.
Just for men to dye my eyebrows.

Lastfroginthebox · 05/11/2025 07:08

I've had men's shorts for walking. They were longer, had plenty of pockets and were hard wearing. Women's ones tend to be too skimpy with useless pockets (or worse - those 'pretend' ones.)

Ineedanewsofa · 05/11/2025 08:10

@carconcerns generally cheap grey ones from ASOS 🤣
