Do you buy anything marketed to men that is just as good, or better than the "womens" version?

We all know women pay more for everything, clothes, beauty, toiletries etc, the pink tax or whatever they call it (cba to look up references and stats, it's a thing).

On that, and because I am a bit more broke than usual this month, what do you feel you save on by buying that isn't the mainstream? I saved £20 on a pair of walking boots last week because I bought the men's ones - am a size 8 which can hard to get in women's shops anyway. I also get men's razors, shaving foam, jumpers and boxer shorts - so much more comfy!

What am I missing? Interested in multivits (currently get one that is designed for women but am wondering if its just the same stuff as men get, maybe with folate added?) and other clothes or better quality things that are made to last.

As for the AIBU - AIBU that in 2025 we should not have to double check prices of the same things against men's products because they know we will pay more even though we earn less?

Men’s sweatshirts are often thicker
mens joggers longer as I’m tall
mens socks as I have size 8 feet, and although women’s SAY up to size 8, they often aren’t
my running trainers are men’s too - wider and a comfortable size

rabbitwoman · 04/11/2025 22:18

Me and my husband share deodorant- lynx dark temptation smells like angel perfume, and the Gold one is lovely too.

I am small so buy kids tee shirts and jumpers - but only boys - dinosaurs, skeletons, lions- girls tee shirts are ridiculous with ribbons and sequins and silly designs!!!

Again, boys trainers on my small feet - they are in bright colours, I have sone with flames up the sides!!!

Men's glasses - don't know if they're cheaper but they look better on me. Men's watches, when I wore watches.

Auburngal · 04/11/2025 22:19

The problem with men’s clothes on women is that they don’t look suitable for smart casual clothes for work. My new job (starting Monday) is smart casual. Just need some longer tops for spring and summer.

I will be wearing a top - short or long, black trousers and if a short sleeve top, long black cardigan

Agapornis · 04/11/2025 22:25

I switched to a good old-fashioned doubled edged safety razor a few years ago. It shaves much more neatly and the blade is super cheap to replace - around 3-6p each depending on where you buy. No cartridge or plastic razor will ever compare again.

Men's tight boxers for the wide elastic and general comfort. Do check the crotch gusset though, sometimes there's a seam in the middle where you really don't want one.

Countedtoten · 04/11/2025 22:26

I generally find toiletries are evenly matched now (in Tesco anyway) but I prefer men's pyjama shorts because they aren't basically hot pants, and basic t-shirts because they aren't boxy or 3/4 length or have cap sleeves, I have a large chest and women's t-shirts are rarely a nice fit

Praminthehall · 04/11/2025 22:27

Socks (totally given up on women’s socks they’re crap). When I discovered the wall
of mens socks in Uniqlo in a fill
spectrum of colours I was actually quite pissed off that these weren’t simply unisex

PJs
deodorant
joggers
some jumpers and cardigans
dressing gowns

any other clothes I like the look of and fits

Tiredofwhataboutery · 04/11/2025 22:29

pj bottoms and jumpers. I’m tall and much prefer plain cotton bottoms. Women’s are often polyester or shorts or have funky patterns or slogans. I want plain ones so I can walk the dog first thing. Jumpers are often better from the men’s more natural fibres, why anyone imagines women want plastic jumpers.

AsTreesWalking · 04/11/2025 22:30

@ QueenOfThorns the absolute best PJs i have ever had are from This Is Unfolded. Legs long enough, arms long enough (im 5'8" with long limbs) lovely material, pockets. Ive just ordered these as a second pair. https://thisisunfolded.com/products/unfolded-rosie-star-print-pyjama-green
As for men's stuff i wear mens Oxford shoes - smart and deep enough to acommodate my bunion!

Rosie Pyjamas - Green Star Print

It’s PJ season again and our sell out Rosie PJs are back in a collection of stunning new prints; pink star, green star, botanical blue floral and zebra… Yup - zebra!  Why have the Rosie PJs sold out for the past 3 years?  These sustainable pyjamas are...

I buy mens razors but I don't buy mens boxers because I actually find them to be eye wateringly expensive in comparison to women's knickers.
I am a size 5 shoe so I always check the kids first (vans especially as they stretch on wear anyway). I buy all my plain t-shirts either from the mens or kids section as they are much cheaper. A size 13-14 in kids is usually about a size 12 (with the exception of trousers, they don't really allow for child birthing hips 🤣)

PiggieWig · 04/11/2025 22:30

I never had an umbrella that didn’t turn inside out till I bought a men’s one. It’s so much sturdier.

Greenwitchart · 04/11/2025 22:31

Men's tee shirts, shirts, jumpers and joggers.

Mydadsbirthday · 04/11/2025 22:33

Shaving gel
Also I always buy men's scarves

I have size 11-12 feet despite being only 5 foot 7 so I've been stuck buying men's shoes and socks already.

I also tend to buy men's hoodies, mens razors, and I'll get wipes and cotton pads/buds from the baby section rather than the make up isle as they tend to be better quality and cost far less. My glasses were also in the teen boy section of my opticians and suited my face far better than the other options.

I got my backpack for going on the back of my wheelchair from the men's section too as it it was better quality with lots of pockets and plain enough that it blends in with the chair more to be less attractive to thieves. All the ones in the women's section were much smaller and flimsy and too brightly decorated.

Yes, bags for men are much better quality - especially backpacks for school. We looked in TK Maxx for DD and the women's ones were like kids versions and no where near enough to put a laptop of A4 folder in, the mens were properly padded straps, almost double the size, proper canvas and cheaper!

Pyjamas. Men's ones are roomier, comfier and have pockets!

swingingbytheseat · 04/11/2025 22:46

yes I buy men’s running shorts & men’s Levi’s because they’re longer (I’m tall & have boy shaped hips & like the deep functional pockets)

SeaofStars · 04/11/2025 22:47

Men’s unscented deodorant. Its much stronger. Men socks are much thicker but tend to be wider .

SeaofStars · 04/11/2025 22:50

The frames on men’s glasses are much thicker and stronger than women’s

Ooh will have to check this out! I am on my feet for 14 hours a day and I really could do with a better deodorant. I feel like I am constantly reapplying l!

Blueuggboots · 04/11/2025 23:00

Blueuggboots · 04/11/2025 23:01

Jeans, the pockets are huge!

I’m a shade under 6ft so have always bought men’s joggers but they do tend to be better quality than women’s (as well as longer!)
Men’s deodorant tends to be cheaper as well

I want some cosy joggers, recently bought 'long' from marks and Spencers and they were only just about long enough prior to being washed and dried and I'm not that tall! Any suggestions?

somethingnewandexciting · 04/11/2025 20:09

Ah, I am lucky I guess as have quite wide feet and prefer a square toed shoe usually anyway!

Interestingly (well a bit dull really) the back of the shoe can be different as the achilles tendon starts lower or higher depending on whether a man’s or woman’s shoe/trainer and this can be more problematic as it can irritate the bit just above your heel as a result.

Something to look out for! I've got a pair of mens boots and 2 pairs of trainers and so far, no issues, thankfully.

But a lot of women's sports shoes have just taken the men's designs and made them smaller. It's only in the last few years they've started to look at women-specific designs, and a lot of them will still be the small versions of men's shoes.
