Do you buy anything marketed to men that is just as good, or better than the "womens" version?

We all know women pay more for everything, clothes, beauty, toiletries etc, the pink tax or whatever they call it (cba to look up references and stats, it's a thing).

On that, and because I am a bit more broke than usual this month, what do you feel you save on by buying that isn't the mainstream? I saved £20 on a pair of walking boots last week because I bought the men's ones - am a size 8 which can hard to get in women's shops anyway. I also get men's razors, shaving foam, jumpers and boxer shorts - so much more comfy!

What am I missing? Interested in multivits (currently get one that is designed for women but am wondering if its just the same stuff as men get, maybe with folate added?) and other clothes or better quality things that are made to last.

As for the AIBU - AIBU that in 2025 we should not have to double check prices of the same things against men's products because they know we will pay more even though we earn less?

Electric shaver
Tee shirts for gym. I'm short but most women's are still not hip length on me.

evtheria · 04/11/2025 20:45

Shirts (like the striped, office type) from charity shops. Yet to find a women’s one I wanted.
When I go trying on perfumes I usually do Men’s, then Unisex, then maybe Women’s if I know they contain specific notes I like. Sadly no money-saving there, though, they cost the same!
Sweatshirts also tend to look better and be thicker from men’s department.

I’m short and have size 3 feet so can’t get away with much else but I’d love to fit vintage menswear.

LaurieFairyCake · 04/11/2025 20:46

I’m an age 11-12 in the boys sections. I am currently rocking very cool dinosaur pyjamas.

Peridoteage · 04/11/2025 20:46

Socks, razors, sometimes shoes.

Its not as big a price difference at it used to be.

Winterjoy · 04/11/2025 20:47

Men's tshirts are always lovely and thick compared to the paper-thin see-through ones in the women's section.

PruthePrune · 04/11/2025 20:48

Mens deodorant is way better than womens

Anyahyacinth · 04/11/2025 20:48

Razors as so many have said but also underpants mens pants are about 3 times the thickness of cotton and quality which I appreciate 🤷‍♀️

MinnieMountain · 04/11/2025 20:50

Another tall woman who wears men’s PJs. Mine are from M&S.

somethingnewandexciting · 04/11/2025 20:51

Nivea men anti-age 2 in 1 power moisturiser looks quite good with SPF30 and only £11! I don't even think Aldi's own face cream with SPF is that cheap!

Mens fleecey hoodies. Couldn't find a women's version that was not some thin crap hoodie. Apparently men can wear warm clothes but women have to have thin fashionable hoodies.

AgentPidge · 04/11/2025 20:53

I can't get the shoes I want in women's (Merrell barefoot trainers) so I was wondering about getting them in the men's. This thread has given me hope! They look the same but I imagine they'll just be a bit wider.

Auburngal · 04/11/2025 20:53

Men's socks. They are about an inch longer in length and thicker. Have a mix of men's and women's. I told my former colleagues in my supermarket working days this and they bought them up when a few lines got reduced.

I do have men's hoodies as 5ft 8. I just wish I could buy a ladies' pink, cornflower blue or purple which is decent in length. I'm a size 18

Which is ridiculous because they carry fat equally all over the body and so run hot, whereas we feel the cold more and end up with see through T shirts and jumpers up to our wrists with any wind blowing a hooley through them!

Time for some nice thick men's socks then! 😉

Can you please tell me where you get these? I have two brushed cotton pairs that I bought from Next years ago, but they’re a little past their best now! Next don’t seem to do them anymore, and the ones I’ve seen in other places aren’t very nice looking

https://tuclothing.sainsburys.co.uk/product/tuc145915800

They have some ladies' checked PJ bottoms but they are £13. These are £10 each!

LakieLady · 04/11/2025 21:00

Another wearer of men's socks, which are so much better than women's socks. They're a good 3" longer and seem to last 3 x as long, too.

canorcant · 04/11/2025 21:00

@Auburngal have you looked at Next? I have a lovely men’s purple hoodie from there, but a couple of years old now.

I like men’s outdoor clothes - I’m tall so walking trousers need to be extra long. They actually have decent pockets, and the waterproof jackets have arms that are long enough and the back isn’t up above my waist.

Also buy men’s shirts, razors, socks, gym and running gear, trainers and shoes - I’m a wide fit and large size, got some lovely men’s Ugg leather Chelsea boots in the sale. Sometimes boxers as I’m sick of my knicker’s gusset disappearing!

Auburngal · 04/11/2025 21:01

I also believe men's t-shirts are more pure cotton or a higher % cotton if mixed materials

Primark have been good for this.

FatalCattraction · 04/11/2025 21:04

Men’s socks, they come up mid calf, perfect for autumn / winter, why women’s are so short is beyond me.

I would like some nice cotton jersey boxers but men’s have a seam where it would irritate me and an opening!
Still searching ….

Where from please! Do they have a gusset?

JillyJoy · 04/11/2025 21:07

Sainsbury's have warm men's PJs.
Aramis, for daytime wear.

houseofisms · 04/11/2025 20:12

Razors!! I just can’t get on with women’s ones with all the fancy guards and lotions etc

I use an old fashioned metal razor with replaceable blades. Works out loads cheaper. The box of blades will probably last the rest of my lifetime (partly cos I rarely shave in winter) and cost a few quid. I can't see any difference in use compared to disposable ones.

My dd, 17 is a quirky dresser, very small boobs and hips and not keen on anything low cut or tight. She likes to buy men's hawaiian shirts (size s is loose and comfy on her). Also wears men's or unisex tshirts as she doesn't like the shorter cap sleeves on a lot of women's ts.

Mostly men's clothing is no use to me as it's the wrong shape for me.

Newsenmum · 04/11/2025 21:09

not men’s but get cotton pads from baby section not beauty

FatalCattraction · 04/11/2025 21:09

Just for men on my lashes and brows. Saves a fortune and no trips to the salon

Absolutely this, lasts longer too, on brows and in terms of number of uses from a box of dye.

But not lashes though surely?? 🤔
