Beckham and his knighthood.

Netcurtainnelly · 04/11/2025 10:14

Crazy that people who get paid for everything they do, get knighthoods.
The real heroes are the people like the worker on the train on Saturday who put his life on the line to save others.
Have the Beckhams ever done anything brave or heroic?

Thought not. Everything they do is for attention also.😏

David Beckham didn’t receive an OBE for bravery or heroics. He was honoured for his service to Sport, which went beyond personal achievements through his contribution to UK football, International football and Sport in general.

Other awards exist for bravery through the Honours system, including the George Cross, George Medal and Kings Gallantry Medal (for civilians, military have their own awards).

Maybe the people involved in the recent train stabbing will be formally recognised. Maybe they won’t. People do heroic things every day that are appreciated by those that are impacted. Unfortunately not everyone who does something great will be formally recognised by our honours system because it would be impossible to manage that.

He's been paid well for everythings hes done.
Lots of other people have made contributions to sport.

"for services to Sport and Charity. Beyond the pitch, Beckham has been a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF since 2005, and he also established the 7 Fund aimed at helping vulnerable children around the world. He supports a number of charities including the Chelsea Pensioners, Help for Heroes, Great Ormond Street Hospital, Age UK and the London Air Ambulance service."

YABU but I also I think you have chosen a bad example.

JamesClyman · 04/11/2025 10:32

Whatever.

KnickerlessParsons · 04/11/2025 10:35

Anyone can nominate anyone for an award, so if you think there are more deserving people out there, get form filling!

He's done all that because he can afford too.

What's with the Beckham hate? Why focus on him

If you really want to look at undeserved knighthoods. Sir Philip Green?

HappyNewTaxYear · 04/11/2025 10:38

People who knock footballers like Beckham think they are being somehow politically aware and astute but actually, they’re just massive snobs.

He could have just sat back on his millions (like most people who make an enormous amount of money) but instead he’s attempted to do some good.

Great!!
He could have kept all the money for himself.

But instead of keeping it, he has used to it to help others, in multiple ways.

Absolutely right - and to push the argument to its extremes, remember ‘Sir James Savile’?

Exactly. David Beckham has set up football academies for youngsters and he was part of the cohort who campaigned for us to have the Olympics in 2012. He does a lot of charity work behind the scenes

Leaked emails published in 2017 had detailed Beckham's 'angry pursuit of a knighthood', including how he described the honours committee as a 'bunch of c*s' after being overlooked.14 Jun 2025

Absolutely

And why is Philip Green still a Sir

Beckham has been a great ambassador for sport, he isn't perfect he loves self promotion but he is also a recognisable figure world wide (or certainly was) without terrible scandals around him

PevenseygirlQQ · 04/11/2025 10:53

He was motivated to do what he did, because he wanted a knighthood and thought it would help.

Non famous people have been recognised though haven’t they?

GasPanic · 04/11/2025 11:05

Someone who puts in the work for charity fair enough.

He got famous and now at least he is using that fame to give something back.

Netcurtainnelly · 04/11/2025 10:57

Whatever his motivations might be, he still was charitable, win win no?

HappyAsASandboy · 04/11/2025 11:14

I’m not saying the system never gets it wrong - plenty of examples where we later learn things that make past decisions look awful.

The general public can nominate people to receive awards for service and awards for bravery. And plenty of “unknown” people receive the awards each year. I suppose we only know about the people who were either already famous (and so of interest to the public and so reported by the media) or those that have a story that is so amazing the media think the public will buy the story about it. Every year their are “normal people” receiving these awards for outstanding service or bravery - have a look at the Birthday Honours List 2025 and you’ll see names you recognise and many many people you don’t. The news doesn’t mention Ruth Elizabeth Taylor for her services to victims and survivors of domestic abuse, but she was recognised with an honour.

It would seem a bit churlish to not recognise someone like David Beckham for the work he has done purely because he had the talent (and therefore then the money) to enable him to give back to the community.

Are you suggesting we only award honours to people who managed to provide exemplary service to the community outwith their talent/finances/position of power? Just recognise the ones that manage to do something extraordinary once in day-to-day life rather than those that work at it and build something over years/decades?

PevenseygirlQQ · 04/11/2025 11:12

Not the right reason to do it.
