Beckham and his knighthood.

Crazy that people who get paid for everything they do, get knighthoods.
The real heroes are the people like the worker on the train on Saturday who put his life on the line to save others.
Have the Beckhams ever done anything brave or heroic?

Thought not. Everything they do is for attention also.😏

And so his moral compass, behaviour and language are irrelevant, yes ok?!

A knighthood recognises contributions, not sainthood !! Pretty sure if flawless and perfection was the rule , that list would be empty !

Yes. They’re all subjective.

MinnieCauldwell · 06/11/2025 08:42

I agree op. I know people who have devoted years to charitable causes with no recognition. I helped form a small charity this year, we didn't do it for gongs. Always feel there is too much fanfare around celebs doing charity stuff.

Having decent set of values doesn’t make someone flawless and perfect!

Having a different set of values doesn’t either.

AngeloMysterioso · 06/11/2025 12:19

I kind of understood his being pissed off at not having a knighthood when those emails came out. I mean, others have received one for doing a lot less. It did seem like there was a bit of snobbery at play. Personally I think he’s earned it and good for him. I quite like Victoria too…

Did you nominate them? You have to be nominated to get recognition. A friend of mine also does a lot for charity. She was nominated and now has a BME.

You don't really understand how charity works do you? Charities use celebrities in ambassadorial roles precisely because there will be 'fanfare'. And that 'fanfare' is to help the charity. They're not going to draw funds and attention to their cause if I talk about it but they will if David Beckham does!

I would argue that footballers are not professionals in the truest sense of the word. They are skilled sportspeople who are paid rather than amateur.

Those in the higher echelons are generally made rich beyond the dreams of avarice and my view, is that, and the honour of representing their country, should be more than sufficient reward.

In fact, I would tax them at 90 per cent, and their clubs too. The earnings are obscene.

I am not saying that wealth should preclude an honour, but all circumstances should be looked at in the round.

Beckham's conniving and foul language should have ruled him out permanently but alas we live in a world where these dim celebrity sports stars are elevated to Demi god status.

'Dim celebrity sport stars'. All of them? If you play sport to an elite level you must be 'dim'? I can think of someone else who is quite 'dim'...

I didn't mean they are all non intellectual and should not have implied as much.

Beckham's results are not available for whatever reason. I just think he is not the brightest bulb. He has sporting prowess but that is quite different. Harry Kane did well, according to Google.

Then there was the case of the footballer who was bullied for reading a broadsheet, but that was a while ago.

PixieandMe · 06/11/2025 13:23

115 caps, 59 as Captain. A well deserved Knighthood!

Words · 06/11/2025 13:37

He scored 17 goals for England in all those matches. With earnings of $800million pounds over his career that is over $47 million per goal.

coldiris · 06/11/2025 13:44

I guess there are different categories in which people get nominated for this sort of thing and Beckham's wouldn't fall in the same category as the train worker but I still think I understand what you mean @Netcurtainnelly as I sometimes also question some of those awards/nominations. For example, with celebrities, it quite often feels that it's just enough to spend a lifetime on TV doing your job so to speak and then you can just get the title. I am not talking about Beckham in particular but some nominations certainly do raise a question.

Netcurtainnelly · 06/11/2025 13:47

Was Catherine jenkins there?

what on earth is "the truest sense of the world"?

The earnings are obscene
their earning are based on the income they generate, did you miss that?

the honour of representing their country, should be more than sufficient reward.
go for it then, and give all your earnings to charity, no one is stopping you 😂

It's funny, we have countries like the UK with Royal are born into their position and privileges and that's fine, but sportspeople who achieved their level through sheer work are being looked down.

I don't think you know a thing about team sport!

Spot on Pixie! It's an interesting calculation nevertheless, Albeit ill informed Grin

simplesimoneatspie · 06/11/2025 18:10

Interesting point…addressing someone as ‘Sir’ growing up usually meant you had immense respect for that person. I don’t feel this for David Beckham so I’m afraid he isn’t a ‘sir’ for me.

SirRaymondClench · 06/11/2025 18:46

I think people think that the Royal family sit there writing out a list of who to honour or something but although you can't technically nominate yourself for one, you can get someone to nominate you and this is what Beckham did for years. There's quite a hefty fee to apply and if you're rejected you don't get it back.

Your application goes before a panel who decide. That's what all the charity work is about (plus tax write offs). That's why he was so angry because he kept getting rejected.

Celebrating the good someone has done matters more than pulling apart their imperfections .

"for services to Sport and Charity. Beyond the pitch, Beckham has been a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF since 2005, and he also established the 7 Fund aimed at helping vulnerable children around the world. He supports a number of charities including the Chelsea Pensioners, Help for Heroes, Great Ormond Street Hospital, Age UK and the London Air Ambulance service."

He did the charity work to get the knighthood - no secret that he wanted one.

Doing charity photo ops isn't exactly using his platform to raise awareness or lobby for change, and doesn't cost him a penny.

I suppose he stood in the queue at the Queen’s lying in state for 13 hours for a photo opp too? There’s cynicism and then there’s just spite. 🙄
