Someone who’s passionate, young and willing to break the rules in politics, all while caring about his city and the people in it. I wish we had someone like that here.

Globalise the intifada is about killing Jews, around the world. Wow you're making a meal of this. Go back to the very beginning of the conversation.

Sharon I know what it means- it has nothing to do with Mamdani - he didn’t condemn the phrase - I agreed that it should never be said- we are going around in circles- please cherry pick from someone elses post

It does have a lot to do with Mamdani. He has explicitly refused to condemn the phrase which is shouted on the campuses and streets of New York, which has the biggest population of Jews outside Israel and which he wants to represent as Mayor. A mealy mouthed 'its not language I would use' is a massive dodge. Either he is himself antisemitic , or he doesn't want to alienate a part of his constiuency that is i.e. the people who do use the phrase.

I wonder what caused his change of heart over the police? Does he actually think they are a racist, homophobic bunch of arseholes who should be defunded or was that just good populist stuff to gain support? Now that he actually needs the NYPD, he has conveniently decided that bunging in a few community support workers with diversity training will sort out the problem.

According to some journalists he is wonderful as he has demonstrated that he is willing to change his position. I think it is more likely that underneath the charisma he is just another shifty man with a lot of personal ambition.

Probably but this kind of stuff gets a lot of leeway.

Whatever the topic, really? Could you point us to a thread where a discussion about antisemitism has happened where its not relevant? You don't think its relevant in New York??

What does eventually happen is that someone posts that the conversation must be driven by 'Israeli operatives' which is so crass. Are there any other subjects on here that people claim are driven by the operatives of a foreign government? I'd love to know.

People think differently to you. If you think they are bots report to mnhq as doing this against the guidelines.

No, it doesn't reflect the reality. Neither here or in the NYC if polls are anything to go by.

In the primaries 67% of Jewish people under the age of 44 voted for Mamdani, he got 43% of the Jewish vote overall. Jews do count and lots are voting for a progressive candidate who wants every New Yorker to have access to a basic standard of living over a sex pest.

Thanks. I dislike the patronising assumption that Jewish people vote en bloc, as if they have no minds of their own or a single uniform experience of life.

RobustPastry · 04/11/2025 09:18

It’s just like Brexit time on here. Loads of aggro people shilling for Reform and stirring things up as best they can. Not sure what MN can do about it unfortunately.

The assumption often made by non Jewish posters on here quite aggressively.

Has that happened on this thread? Someone said something along the lines of 'Jews are happy with him' (I cant be bothered to go back) but several people have mentioned that there is a variety of opinion amongst Jews and age and other issues are a factor.

Except the reality is that even though some Jewish people have said they will vote for him others have raised serious concerns about him. Perhaps people don't realise that 'identity' is not the only factor in deciding people's votes?

I am not a Reform voter. I could hardly be since I am a brown immigrant.

I have just become very wary of charismatic politicians on both sides of the fence as I get older. A lot of Mamdani's policies seem to collapse on analysis. I haven't kept up with his anti-semitism, but not sure how he is going to fund all he promises. I note he's walked back from defunding the police.

waitamo · 04/11/2025 09:41

Pity "they" didn't forensically examine every single past deed of Trump pre elections.

No one is perfect, but there's truly flawed and what someone thinks is flawed.

It's not though is it, he has made his position clear, he isn't the word police but it's not something he would say. What other words do you want him to police or is it just this that sticks in your craw because he is Muslim? What other words and phrases has this Muslim man been asked to specifically 'condemn'? Seems a bit of a coincidence that this is the only phrase that a Muslim person is being repeatedly badgered on.

He has specifically condemned the killing of Israeli civilians, including on October 7, and has consistently advocated for nonviolent political resistance. He has condemned both Israel and Hamas for their breaches of International law. He calls antisemitism a serious problem and has released extensive policy proposals to protect Jewish New Yorkers. His platform includes increasing funding to prevent hate crimes and appointing a senior adviser in City Hall to tackle antisemitism.

He has been critical of Israels genocide but consistent in his vow to support Jewish New Yorkers, the people who it would be his job to support and protect. Being a supporter of a violent foreign government shouldnt be a prerequisite to being the mayor of New York yet some how for some people it seems to be a sticking point that he isn't. His opponent and posters here seem intent on wedging terrorism supporter and Mamdani together and we all know why.

Labour too have posts like this. You can’t expect to only see politics you agree with on a public site, especially now they have so few supporters left. You’d have to find a FB Labour (or other left party) for that.

But why does he refuse to condemn it? What possible reason could there be?

Nice try to imply I and others are islamophobic though. I think evrryone shoukd condemn it not just muslims.

I wish there were more centrist and fewer populist politicians everywhere. Somewhere between Trump and Mamdani.

The world is very complex and I have become deeply distrustful of simple solutions. I do realise that makes me a fence sitter.

I'm the same.

JHound · 04/11/2025 09:55

I don’t know enough about what he would be like as a mayor to comment.

But the MAGA meltdown and bigotry he has faced simply because of his ethno-religious background has been a sight to behold.

(And MAGAts deliberately mispronouncing his name are tedious.)

Not based on hatred and division???? Seriously?!?!

He has faced hatred and division from US conservatives. He has not formented any.

JHound · 04/11/2025 09:58

Leoari · 03/11/2025 18:45

He can't even bring himself to call Hamas terrorists. He is clearly anti- Israel and I would say his whole outlook is based on hatred.

Even of he was anti-israel, Israel and Judaism are two different things. You claimed he was an anti-semite. That was a lie.

JHound · 04/11/2025 09:59

Holluschickie · 03/11/2025 18:49

Being wary of Mamdani's promises is not racist. I am Indian myself. I am just suspicious of trendy slogans like ' Defund the police' and " make buses free". I am not sure they will work.

Why won’t making buses free work?

People probably said similar about the meltdown when Trump got in. Round and round it goes.

How he does will be interesting. Does he rely on federal funding much?

It’s probably a good way to find out if someone with his rhetoric can deliver what people are expecting.
