To be sick of people moaning about their pets and fireworks?

There's currently a debate on my local Facebook page as the people in the street behind me let off a long, spectacular firework display in their back garden which was very loud.
It was absolutely brilliant and my kids loved it.

Someone has moaned that her four cats are terrified and others are joining in and saying their cats/dogs are also distressed.

They are all saying they should have had a warning?? Even though it's the weekend before bonfire night??

But what really annoys me is that if you click on this woman's name and see all her past posts, she's moaned about the same bloody thing at the same time of year for the past SIX years!!!

Why has she done nothing to prepare for this even though she knows full well it happens around the same time??!!!

Just to say, in case it helps anyone, our previous cat was quite nervy so we just kept a feliway plugged in for the time around Fireworks night and it really helped her. They do a dog version too.

A lot of miserable people on this thread - where do you live that fireworks are so unbearably loud INSIDE your home?

FWIW I do think we should go to public displays only for safety reasons - new build estates with all their gardens packed in back to back together are not the place to be setting off explosives but I could not give one iota of a shit if your dog is upset. People’s enjoyment ahead of pets. Always.

What a lovely comment.

im not going to give my location but yes we can hear them at 1am INSIDE when we’re trying to sleep, for week.

and I’ve said it before…..it’s not just dogs!!!!!

People have stopped treating their dogs like dogs and this is the outcome

" fur baby" springs to mind

AutumnalPuffin · 02/11/2025 20:44

I entirely agree with you: fireworks are a magic and completely altruistic thing that people have enjoyed for millennia. People have also had pets for millennia and the two have managed to coexist so I’m not sure why now some people’s nervous dogs are thought to be more important than the millions of people who love fireworks.

This! Some people are so bloody miserable and want everything stopped!

What a good idea to ‘prepare for it’. I will have a conversation with my dog now. I’m sure that will help over the next few evenings and he won’t be terrified. Should have thought of that earlier myself.

Fireworks are a couple of nights a year.

We have to put up with your smelly, barking, obnoxious pets in our public and social spaces all year round.

Yeah! Same with those wild animals, foxes, badgers, birds! All completely spoilt by humans. They should be able to handle explosions and bright lights. Its November!

They are so stupid to not get this.

ItsJustLittleOldMe · 02/11/2025 21:14

I’m more bothered by the little twats letting them off literally aiming them along the road instead of the sky at two am on Thursday night. I had to go find my cat and get him in. I know they will be going off around this time of year but the fact absolute dick head kids can buy them and do that really annoys me.

Throwaway65131 · 02/11/2025 21:15

It sounds from your post like she was asking for warning SO she could prepare!

MD2020and10LambertandButlerPlease · 02/11/2025 20:53

I didn't say they should be banned, I said they should be the organised displays only.

If you have problem with dogs you can campaign for them to be sold to people with licences only, or you can choose to go to one of the infinite numbers of dog free places. Or you can choose to sit peacefully in your home where they won't affect your child.

I can't sit in my home peacefully with idiots setting off fireworks for weeks on end, there is nowhere to go away from them.... but carry on thinking that you did something with your stupid 'point'.

Oh how I wish there were infinite dog free places.

vodkaredbullgirl · 02/11/2025 21:15

This is also very true! In cafes & quite literally everywhere! I’d love some peace away from them!

Are you that dense?? The poor wildlife... The environment. Do people only care about themselves? Me me me ..

They really aren’t though are they? They have been the past two weekends, random times midweek, and will be at least either side of the 5th and the 5th and then next weekend as well, possibly also the one after.

and I’m not sure how you think you can smell that person’s dog or why you make an assumption that they bark.

but you know, make all animals suffer for some loud banging noises because you don’t like dogs and want to watch things explode even if it scares animals - pets, wildlife, oh and humans with ptsd. But as long as you’re happy eh?!

GoldPoster · 02/11/2025 21:19

Police horses are sensitised to loud noises. It’ll be possible with other animals.

I think many pets are distressed by their owners reactions, It teaches them there’s something to be scared of.

rwalker · 02/11/2025 21:19

Kicks off every year on our local facebook

the problem is there’s little sympathy for dogs due to them making everyone life a misery all year round barking morning noon and night

You’ve done it now. All the fur parents will be incandescent. Their babies are upset

Topseyt123 · 02/11/2025 21:20

I can tell that you are an empathetic person (not).

Plenty of people also don't cope with the racket of fireworks, especially as they go off like mortars these days. Pets and wildlife really suffer too.

I actually do like a good firework display, but I think they should be banned from sale to the general public and be for licensed and professional displays only.

Not all potential police horses pass their training. Some just cannot cope with it.

Same with any animal- some can cope, some can learn to cope through training, some will just never get to that stage because their fear is too great.

Surely you must realise that, like humans, all animals are different.

Screamingabdabz · 02/11/2025 21:21

There were 31,920 dog attacks on people recorded in England and Wales in 2024 and 16 deaths from dog attacks this year.

There were an estimated 2000 injuries treated in A&E last from fireworks, many of those were from sparklers.

I think I’ll take my chances with the firework lovers myself.

BananaramaDefence · 02/11/2025 21:22

Personally, I find people letting their dogs bark 365 days of the year distressing. Never seems to stop the selfish fuckers from letting them. I'll keep setting off fireworks once a year myself....

I'm also very allergic to dogs. They set my asthma off, but hey ho, I'll just put up with them everywhere.

So massively less time than dogs, then. There's no getting round the fact that dogs in public spaces are a year round constant and the average person will encounter them much more than fireworks.

There actually are decent arguments to limit fireworks, but they scare my dog is not one of them.

Your dog will survive

Really?!? My dog turned three on November the first 2024. He was a very anxious dog and medicated for it. He went to sleep forever on the 8th November 2024 as the fireworks going off as soon as it got dark at night tipped him over the edge. The vet said that he wouldn’t get over it and it was like he had a form of PTSD, his medication was at its highest. It broke my heart to make that decision but I couldn’t bear watching him so scared all the time, his quality of life was getting worse. So no, not every dog will survive you wicked person.

To be sick of people moaning about their pets and fireworks?

Some of the replies on here have confirmed my suspicion that firework lovers actually enjoy them a little bit more knowing they distress animals. They see it as some kind of payback for having to exist on the same planet as them - getting their revenge for a few nights a year
