To have seen the same music artist 20 times

Musicforever · 02/11/2025 16:50

I have loved a particular artist since they started making music and seen them perform approximately annually. I absolutely love their music and the joy of dancing and singing along to it.

A friend pointed out to me that this was odd, because most people would see an artist that they liked, then that be it... Sort of "been there - done that - got the t-shirt - no need to see them again".

I don't go on more than one date of the same tour, nor do I hang out trying to meet the artist - I just really enjoy their shows. They are the only artist I do this for. I have seen many other artists just the once.

Is it unusual for people to repeatedly see the same artist year after year? I have never thought anything of it, so thought I'd see if iabu to think it's not that odd!

Yabu - it is odd
Yanbu - many people see artists perform year after year and that's just part of them having a fan base

Do whatever you want that makes you happy. Why does your friend even have an opinion on this?!

CMOTDibbler · 02/11/2025 16:55

I love seeing the same artist over and over- even different dates in the same tour. I’ll have seen one artist 3 times in a year at very different venues come January and loved each one (and have been seeing him for over 30 years). Your friend is weird

verycloakanddaggers · 02/11/2025 16:55

Loads of people see a favourite artist regularly.

Your friend's quite sheltered if she doesn't understand this.

Enjoy the next twenty concerts!

SpottyAardvark · 02/11/2025 16:55

YANBU.

I have been to many Bruce Springsteen gigs. It’s always interesting because it’s a different show with a different set list every night. If it was a band just going through the motions & playing the same show every time, that would be different.

Catheric · 02/11/2025 16:56

I’ve seen my favourite artist 25-30 times, including 6 times last year (7 if you include the q&a I attended with them). I thought that was quite normal as a fan.
I’m still hoping for some London dates this year so I can see them again.
I’ve been a fan since I was 14 though so that number of gigs is over a few years..

I8toys · 02/11/2025 16:59

I think YABU - I love up and coming bands and when they get too big the venues are horrible and everything including the merch is overpriced. Love small venues and lots of different music. Sticking the same artist would bore me silly.

WIcurious · 02/11/2025 16:59

Feeling a bit slack here, I’ve only seen my favourite band 10 times :)

TheUsualChaos · 02/11/2025 16:59

I would agree with her that it's more typical to see same artist once or twice but if you enjoy going every year then why not? Am sure there plenty of people that do this for a favourite band if it's something they really enjoy. People watch the same football team over and over and it's not like that's a totally unique experience every time, they just enjoy it 🤷‍♀️

megacat · 02/11/2025 16:59

I don’t understand your friends point of view at all. I remember buying tickets as a teenager for take that’s new tour and my mother being baffled as I’d been to see them the previous year.

There are a few artists I go to every single tour in this country.

ilovelamp82 · 02/11/2025 17:02

Nope. I've seen a few of my favourite artists over 20 times. What could be better?

IKnowAristotle · 02/11/2025 17:03

There's lots of artists I've seen multiple times and my favourite band over 20 times.

Newname71 · 02/11/2025 17:05

I see my favourite bands any time they tour locally. I love live music and Download festival is the highlight of my year 😊

My answer depends on who the artist is 👀🤣

Feeda · 02/11/2025 17:12

I’ve seen Adam Ant about 20 times over the years and will do so again this month

Tillow4ever · 02/11/2025 17:12

I have seen my favourite artist on tour 6 times now. I’d honestly choose to go to one of her tours every year if I could afford it over another artist I’d never seen live - I KNOW she puts on an amazing show, I always have a great time, and I love her music. It’s a no brainer to me.

I do see the other viewpoint of trying to see lots of different artists, but I don’t think one is more right than the other - it’s what YOU prefer.

HollywoodTease · 02/11/2025 17:13

Your friend is a weirdo.

There's one Swedish band that I particularly love at the moment and including festivals I have seen them 11 times in 5 different countries just this year.

If you like them, if watching them makes you happy, if you can afford it then go as often as you like.

Oh and tell your friend to get a (better) life!

Mrstawnyowl · 02/11/2025 17:14

I’ve seen Andre Rieu 3 times and I’m going to my 5th Madness concert next month.

FullOfMomsense · 02/11/2025 17:16

I think it's odd but harmless. I don't understand people who idolise celebrities, but if you're going as a casual fan who loves their music, great. If you're going and screaming, crying, throwing up when they come on stage, weird.

WhiteCold · 02/11/2025 17:16

Nothing wrong with having a favourite music artist. It's no different to going to watch your local football team all the time really is it.

Jellycatspyjamas · 02/11/2025 17:16

There are a few artists I’ve seen many many times, sometimes multiple dates on the same tour. All small, acoustic artists playing smaller venues - live music is a gift from the universe, enjoy as many gigs as you can.

BauhausOfEliott · 02/11/2025 17:18

It’s not odd at all! There are loads of artists I’ve seen multiple times and it’s completely normal if you’re a big fan. It’s not like they do the same gig every time. It’s always a different experience. There are lots of artists whose mailing lists I subscribe to specifically because I like to make sure I know when/where they’re touring so I can book every time they play nearby.

Does your friend also think it’s odd for football fans to watch their team play more than once?

PGmicstand · 02/11/2025 17:19

I'd have seen my favourite artist 200+ times if circumstances had prevailed. As it was, it has been just the once and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I doubt I'll ever be able to see them perform again, sadly. We live on different sides of the world, and I don't think they're intending to tour again, being over 70

JohnTheRevelator · 02/11/2025 17:22

I don't see a problem with seeing the same artist many times. 20 times is nothing! I've heard of some people seeing their favourite band or artist hundreds of times. I went to see my favourite band when I was in my late teens 4 times between mid 1980 and late1981. I was made by some people to think this was excessive! I'm glad I did though, because they split up 2 years later.

BarbaraHavers · 02/11/2025 17:24

Not weird at all.
What is weird is someone I know who saw a touring show over 50 times over the course of a 5 month run because the main character was played by her favourite Strictly dancer. I just cannot imagine sitting through the same musical that many times over a lifetime, never mind a matter of months.

But going to see one band dozens of times doesn’t mean you can’t also see up and coming bands?!

And also seeing a band loads of times doesn’t mean they’re a band that plays big venues. The bands I’ve seen the most often still play mostly small venues, and have done for the many years I’ve been watching them.

I live in a city with a very big music scene and I go and see loads of new bands. I also go and see loads of established bands. The established bands I go to watch are mostly playing at similar size venues to the new bands.
