Mounjaro jabs! WWYD

MangoRose · 01/11/2025 20:27

I have just started mounjaro jabs and haven't told anyone at all. This may be a really stupid question but would you tell people or just say eating less/exercise. I have recently started at the gym after a long break so it wouldnt be unbelievable I guess.

It feels really deceitful, but then again its no ones business and they shouldn't really ask (IMO).

I’m about to start on Monday. I have decided that if anyone asks I will be honest but I won’t volunteer the info. To be honest there are 2 people I know right now who are losing the weight after struggling with it for years who are saying it’s down to portion size. I 100% think they are on the jabs and that’s fine but I think even if I did lose it via a conventional method everyone would think it was the injection anyway! So may as well try it.

I think lying about this is not fair to others who are struggling with their weight - they will see you being successful from “ more exercise and less food” and will wonder why it is not working for them.

It’s not the responsibility of anyone using any medication, for any reason and any illness/disease, to make life fair for others.

GiddyDog · 01/11/2025 22:09

MangoRose · 01/11/2025 20:44

I think people now just assume people are on the jabs if they lose a decent amount of weight anyway so potentially it won't make a difference if I didnt say anything.

You are all right though, if anyone tells me they are on them I always think how brilliant it is they have done that, I am way too hard on myself!

I lost 5st over 18 months up to the start of this year without jabs, am maintaining since and working on fitness and this has been my experience. Quite a few people making nudge nudge wink wink comments or trying to get me to 'admit' to using them, despite the fact I actually didn't.
If you want to lose weight you should do it in a way that works for you, if that means mounjaro go for it, and you should disclose only what you're comfortable with. You wouldn't feel the need to admit you'd started taking ramipril for your blood pressure or an inhaler for asthma so why do you feel you owe anyone this information about this particular medicine.

It’s not about fairness but being considerate. I lost seven stone in a year using Mounjaro. I had several colleagues who struggled with their weight ask me how I did it.

I could have said “oh it’s just diet and exercise” and gone on my way, knowing how hard I found it to stick to a diet and exercise regime. But that would have been very inconsiderate of me, knowing there was a huge helping hand in the background.

That is an amazing amount of weight loss, congratulations.

It is really personal and people shouldn't probe further!

I might consider discussing using WLI if the enquiry was from someone who was obese and genuinely looking for information and help about losing weight. Nobody in that position has asked me. The only times I've been questioned about it was by people who were just being nosy and a bit intrusive, and then wanting to go on about the usual headline grabbing nonsense that you see about these medications.

Yea you can call it inconsiderate, unfair, whatever you like. I don’t agree with you. You can share whatever private medical information you want with your colleague, but it’s no one else’s responsibility to. And it certainly isn’t inconsiderate to not want to share that with others.

Anonymous07200408 · 01/11/2025 22:20

I hate to say it but everyone will assume you’re taking them if you lose weight. As someone who will probably be on them for life and who is totally open about it I find it awkward and embarrassing when people pretend that they have lost weight through diet and exercise.

My mum does this and it gives me second hand embarrassment.

Thank you! It’s taken a while for me to get on board and feel like I wasn’t “cheating” but it’s been 5 years since peri menopause and the gradual weight gain started and I haven’t managed to do it myself. I only need to lose 2.5 stone really but the mental effect will be huge I hope, I don’t look in mirrors or buy clothes anymore and I’m excited to change and do something that might make me feel good about myself.

themerchentofvenus · 01/11/2025 22:21

I don't see the point of lying unless you're embarrassed?

Truetoself · 01/11/2025 22:21

I tell everyone. Whatever anyone says it IS cheats way of losing weight. What they do is supress your appetite. If you continue to eat crap, you will eat less due to satiety.

i completely understand about will power, foof noise etc. ultimately weight loss comes into calories in vs calories out.

NikkiPotnick · 01/11/2025 22:23

While I personally don't want to lie about it, if people ask then they're choosing to take that risk. It can be entirely avoided by just not questioning anyone.

But loads of people do lose weight with diet and exercise, its not completely out of the ordinary. How do you know that those people havent just stuck to a diet? Not everyone losing weight will be on them I guess.

I may feel comfortable sharing about it at some stage. I just don't know yet.

I just think, knowing how hard it is to lose weight the traditional way, that it’s deceitful and wrong to try and pretend you’ve suddenly got a huge amount of willpower. These drugs are incredible things that do something amazing, but you’re wrong if you pretend they’re not a huge helping force

SilenceInside · 01/11/2025 22:25

themerchentofvenus · 01/11/2025 22:21

I don't see the point of lying unless you're embarrassed?

So, it could be because it's people's personal private medical information and decision making that they don't want to get into a discussion about with people who are not close. It could be because they find discussions about it tedious and judgemental. It could be because they are uncomfortable with people knowing that they can afford to pay for them. Perhaps because they know that the person asking will then gossip about them for ages. Maybe people don't like being the focus of attention that this sort of topic generates, as people can be overly curious and ask further intrusive questions.

I have a similar amount to lose, I feel very much like you do about it all!

@SoEasyToFall there's a difference between discussing your own personal circumstances, and discussing WLI in general. If someone asked me if I thought WLI were a good idea, I'd say yes and explain why I think so, without needing to give my own personal experience. No one needs to know that I am using WLI in order to find out about them or discuss them. I can't imagine that there are many obese people who are desperate to lose weight who haven't heard of them by now!!

Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · 01/11/2025 22:28

Like others, I would assume anyone I know who has lost significant weight would be on GLP-1 anyway these days. They're so common.

I even know people who only had half a stone to lose go on the jabs and are now stick thin!

I'm not overweight but have put on a stubborn half a stone and I'm seriously tempted to give them a go myself...

MangoRose · 01/11/2025 22:29

themerchentofvenus · 01/11/2025 22:21

I don't see the point of lying unless you're embarrassed?

I am embarrassed in a way, I feel like I have been greedy and lacked control. I only feel like that about myself, I feel like I look disgusting whereas I dont feel like that about others, I see people who are several stones heavier than me and often think they look great in an outfit I don't think I could wear as I'm not a size 10. I don't feel like they should be embarrassed or think badly of them if they are on the jabs either.

I said nothing unless I was asked. If I was asked I answered truthfully. Why would you not? You have nothing to be ashamed of.

Sure but unless you’re open about using them, it’s just going to make other people feel shit about themselves isn’t it? It’s not like it’s an embarrassing thing to use? I can honestly say I’ve never heard a bad response. People I know who have been very against them have changed their mind after speaking to me.

Notagain75 · 01/11/2025 22:31

It's no one else's business. Nothing to be ashamed of but I don't know why anyone should be told about personal medical information.

You don’t need to ‘pretend’ anything. You just don’t have to tell anyone what drugs you’re taking. I’m clearly just a deceitful arsehole because I don’t want to share my private medical history with everyone at work, thanks for that.
