Should guising/trick or treating have an upper age limit..?

I live on a fairly small new build estate. Halloween is a pretty big deal here. Quite Americanised. Decorations are elaborate (for those who wish to participate. It’s quite well known in the area and families from surrounding areas travel to the estate to go guising there (another argument in itself but generally it does t really bother me).

Ive been taking my kids guising there since we moved in 4 years ago. There has always been a lovely, friendly atmosphere, just lots of families milling about. The kids absolutely love it.

Last night however I’d say the vibe was a bit different. Maybe because it was Friday night? Big groups of teenagers walking about in scream masks etc, pushing their way through crowds of small kids to the doors. I’m not talking 12-13 year olds. I mean 14, 15, 16. They looked like fully grown adults.

Someone (not me, for the record) has posted on the estate facebook page bemoaning these teenagers, too old for guising, intimidating, taking sweets that are for the wee ones etc. An argument has duly broken out. Surely it’s better that they are guising and not drinking in the park, who is this person to say that these teens are too old etc.

I’m kind of on the fence, but to be honest I did think the groups of teens were a bit on the ridiculous side. My eldest is 11 and understands she is at the upper end of the guising age scale.

The worst thing for me is that people tend to leave bowls of sweets outside when they take their own kids round the doors. These groups of teens have been caught on Ring doorbells emptying these bowls into their bags so the wee ones don’t get anything. But to be fair I accept that’s a hazard of leaving stuff outside (although this hasn’t been a problem in previous years).

I work with teenagers and they get a very bad press. They are so young still and want to have fun. We complain when they try to grow up to fast so we shouldn't moan when they want to hold on to fun traditions. Of course there will always be a couple of silly ones with poor judgement. They are just toddlers in giant bodies, especially the boys. In our area the teens are generally lovely and polite. We' s had the odd incident, I recall last year someone's pumpkin was stolen but mostly they are great

My 14 year old went trick or treating. Spent time making an outfit, had a great time. Loved seeing everyone out and about and seeing the houses decorated. Some others from her school year went to a Halloween party and got drunk. Glad she chose to do the latter really!

I said no my 15yo trick or treating he’s six foot and wanted to go out in ye olde plague mask and claw hands. I thought he’d give someone a heart attack!

I’d have given him sweets!

“All teenagers do is sit on their phones and PlayStations inside, they need they outside more”

Teenagers go outside to do something fun.

“well we can’t have that, we need to pass a law or something to prevent this”

Autistic 16 year old and her two neurodiverse friends got dressed up, watched The Witches and then went trick or treating. They are all young for their age and very polite. People were kind to them. No harm done. I was happy to see my DD enjoying herself and getting out of the house off her own bat.

I think over 10 is too old for trick or treating. Around here, kids are accompanied by a parent (all in costumes). It's very much frowned upon for preteens and over to participate, unless they dress up and don't push in. It's all about teaching children manners in a way. If they're kind to the little ones and join in with the spirit of costumes, contributing by watching over younger siblings, not grabbing handfuls of sweets or charging about in little mobs, older ones are tolerated. The focus should be community, not candy-grabbing.

Ive never heard the word guising before ! Always called trick or treating. Anyway Ive got an 11 year old and a 15 year old. My 15 year old came out with us, granted he went home early but he was with me so its not like he was causing any trouble. I dont see a problem with it. I think as your kids get older you may see things differenly and want to cherish those 'kid' moments.

My 12 year old felt he was too old this year, so he gave out the sweets instead. He did make sure to keep some back for himself and ate plenty while he was giving them out!

From my local Facebook group:
Halloween Reminder:
Teenagers who seem too old to be out guising chose childhood over partying. Be happy and hand over the snickers.
Can’t wait for Friday!! 😃

I agree with this. Kids grow up too early. I'm all for them hanging onto childhood a bit longer. Give them a haribo and let them still be kids.

My friends and I were in year 10 when we went out trick or treating for the last time. We did get some push back from people though saying we were too old. I personally think people who try and put limits on it like being too old, or not being local enough are so miserable.
