Feeling a bit shaky after an encounter in Sainsbury's

HelenSkeleton · 01/11/2025 18:27

I just went to a Sainsbury's Local and picked up a bar of chocolate advertised at £2.40. It scanned at £3.00 and there was another shelf with the same bar at the higher price so I went to the counter, explained that I was confused about the price and the woman behind the counter went to check.

While she was doing that a woman who looked like a manager came up to me and very rudely told me there was "no need to get like that". I wasn't like anything. I was not rude, unkind, nasty or anything. I was perfectly calm. I told her I wasn't "getting like anything" and was merely confused. I was also confused by her attitude. She was very argumentative told me that "we make mistakes" which I acknowledged but she continued arguing with me saying"I've just told you we make mistakes". I hadn't even complained, simply asked for the correct price. I told her she was protesting too much at this point.

She was really confrontational at which point I said "you know what, let's just leave it" and I left the shop. I'm actually shaking and I don't know why. Her reaction was out of all proportion. I feel quite sick.

But if staff did their job and weren’t aggressive - what’s the problem??

why are people excusing the staff member?

Firstly we have one side of the story secondly im not excusing the staff member if op felt unfairly treated absolutely complain but don't spend time searching her up on the internet finding out her full name and linkden and god knows what else. That crosses a massive line.

I imagine she was having a tough day. Just for context about what retail workers go through my teenage daughter who works some overtime shifts in a town centre local Sainsbury’s was threatened with r**e the other day when she asked a man to pay for his shopping. She was crying for quite a bit of her shift. Another colleague has refused to come in after having his life threatened. They literally can’t get the staff to stay as it’s a really challenging location.
Not excusing her attitude to you OP but perhaps helping with perspective?

And this is the exact reason why we don't give surnames there is some scary people out there. I remember once serving a man he was clearly extremely mentally unwell and he was telling me he dreamed of me hanging from a tree naked. So why people are sticking up for op for looking up personal details of this employee just be considerate of the safety issues and fear that goes with that with working with the general public.

Whiskeyandkittens · 01/11/2025 23:56

I was with the OP at the start, sounds like the staff member was horrible and I've experienced similar adrenaline responses before with the shaking!

But the looking her up is weird! If she has such an unusual first name that she was easy to find then surely if you complain to Sainsbury's they'd know who was working that night even if it was a more common name? And if she graduated in 2020 that hardly shows she's inexperienced, she could have been there 5 years (or longer if she was working whilst studying) - how long would you have to do a job for you to deem someone to be experienced?

That's insane I've worked in retail for over 20 years and its always been a big thing never ever give out surnames. To many crazy people about.

That is odd. People that work in hospitals always have their full names displayed. Police don't have any at all.

Most people who work in hospitals dont its mainly only drs so they usually use fake names on social media or don't use social media. As retail staff do not give full names we don't need to name change or not have social media so where not prepared when that one weirdo comes along. Also the hospital know exactly who there patients are customers are complete strangers they could be anyone Do you honestly think its acceptable what op did?

I was a student ODP and we had to wear a name badge as well as our lanyard.
We were told to have our social media as private as we could make it as you would get patients that would maybe take a liking to you, and look you up.

If I felt wronged by retail staff, then I would be looking up the staff member too. However, there is a difference between looking them up so you can give a name to their boss, and looking them up so you can harass them on LinkedIn/Facebook etc.

Nearly50omg · 02/11/2025 00:21

Contact the store and ask to speak to a senior manager and explain what happened. Someone like that manager shouldn’t be working with members of the public!!

Firstly in in hospitals staff all wear them big yellow badges saying hello my name is ...... but its only a first name. Secondly like I said before the company will be able to figure it out its not hard with a first name, time of day and department. Customers do not need to be looking up staff online to get there information

Well, we had to display badges with our full name. No big yellow badges here.
And like I said, funny how the police don't even have a badge with a first name. But anyway....

OP did nothing wrong by looking up public information. That is not stalking. Have you been stalked? Looking up a name is not stalking.

Its been a while since you've worked in a hospital hasn't it the hello my name is campaign started in 2013. I never once said stalking. Iv repeatedly said its weird and could potentially be very dangerous considering the sort of violent threats people working in the general public recieve. I've also repeatedly explained how its not necessary as its very easy for the company to figure out.

Was after 2013. Maybe students are held to different standards. We had to display our full name on a badge that also showed our university (so people could properly stalk us I guess).

I was an inpatient in a psychiatric hospital. The staff have no uniform or badges. One staff member made very inappropriate comments about me to me, and about my care.
I reported her to the ward manager the next day. I had no name to go on as they did not have badges. I was asked to describe her. She was black and had short hair with purple streaks in. I was told there was no one there like that. Turned out she wore wigs and changed them all the time.
An example of why name badges are needed.

Interesting to see quite a few people mention Sainsburys. I had an incident a few months ago, using the Smartshop - I'd finished the payment process and the total came up, then I got the re-scan message - however, just about every till - not just mine - was flashing up for a re-scan. A harassed-looking assistant came over to me, scanned a few items, got to some reduced meat, and her face completely changed as she said 'you'll have to go to a till to put everything through again' - she didn’t say it outright but she was clearly implying that I hadn’t initially scanned it.

I politely told her that everything had indeed been scanned but she looked totally disbelieving and I felt quite accused. The colleague on the till she sent me to was as cold and monosyllabic as it’s possible to be, and tbh I don’t think there’s much doubt what she thought. Lo and behold, the manual rescan produced exactly the same total as on the Smartshop, so I had indeed scanned everything just as I’d said.

They were both horrible though. I did actually email and make the point that all the tills had been flashing and there was clearly some problem, but I got some feeble 'we’re sorry if you felt that way'-type response.

The very next time I went into that (very large) branch, guess what….all the Smartshop terminals were once again flashing for rescans….

There has been some problems over the past week with Sainsbury's Internet going down. I've always had really good service there. I'm surprised at some of the comments attacking the OP though and accusing of lies and stalking is completely over the top.

ShoveItUpYourArseMargaret · 02/11/2025 00:41

I consider it to be fraud through complacency and indifference...I had similar in Sainbos a few months ago. The shop assistant went to 'check' andtheb wrongly told me the item was priced correctly and I hadn't been mischarged. I knew differently, the wheels of my trolley even locked when I had to go back to check myself - so annoying!...Supermarkets are making a killing at our expense, they can jolly well not overcharge us and not treat paying customers like criminals.

And retail staff wear name badges a first name is sufficient what you describe is a person without a name badge at all. Also take into account they where lying to you as everything in hospitals are documented so they no exactly which staff are dealing with which patients but unfortunately thats the reality of being in pysch wards you lose all your rights and there is often a lot of abuse I say this from experience of being on a section 2 multiple times and a section 3 a couple of times. Its not the same as going into a shop and talking to a stranger for a couple of minutes them annoying you then you googling them and going on there LinkedIn and potentially social media to find out information on them.

Did you see the post yesterday of the lady who works in a takeaway and the customer came in after abandoning her car with her baby in it in the middle of the street screaming and shouting because some of her order was missing they looked on the cameras and she had been given her whole order and op explained how scared and threatened she felt would you of encouraged that customer to look up that op full name and details online and linkdn and potentially Facebook, Instagram etc. Or would you understand that there are 2 sides to a story and issues should be dealt with through management

It is not stalking to find info on someone. It is stalking when you actually stalk them.

Yes it can be worked out from management, but when are the person that has been wronged then you want things sorted ASAP and not waiting for all the leg work to be done when you have already done it yourself.

So don't go through management contact them yourself on social media because they have wronged you ( a minimum wage retail worker) you sound insane right now and this conversation is over.

I'd quote your user name at you, because you don't sound alright at all. Why are you so angry? You aren't even the person who started the post and you are getting yourself in a tizzy. I've read this thread from top to bottom and I don't see anywhere that the OP is going to contact the Sainsbury's staff on social media.

I've put her first name, Sainsbury's and the address into Google and her LinkedIn has popped up so I have her full name now.

She graduated in 2020!

Searching for her online is absolutely bonkers. Just get on with your day.

Because i work in retail and it puts us in an incredibly dangerous situation i had a colleague at an old job where a customer turned up at her children's school to confront her as he felt she needed sorting as he had been wronged. Guess how he got all the details luckily it was sorted quickly and he was arrested but what if he had a knife or decided to follow her home. People agreeing that this is ok to do to people just doing there job seriously need to think about what they are saying not everyone is a good harmless person.

I used to work for Argos and it was well known in our company that Sainsbury’s staff are not very nice and a manager just come back from working at an Argos in a Sainsbury’s store , he was the loveliest man you could meet … funny , polite and always such a positive cheery person but even he said he thought people used to exaggerate when they said what Sainsbury’s staff are like especially to Argos staff but he said nope they were terrible and rude … he hated working with them so I suspect you also met one of the Sainsbury’s colleagues that are rude !
