AIBU to cook a 1KG chicken for 5 people at Christmas?

ChickenChristmasDinner · 01/11/2025 17:57

Our family have voted to have chicken at Christmas this year. We normally have a 1KG chicken for 4 people. Two people have a breast and the other two have a leg each.

However, at Christmas, there will be 5 of us at the table. I was thinking that as there will be starters, sides and a pudding at the feast , then our usual 1KG chicken might stretch to 5 people?

Am I being over optimistic?

Are you cooking for 5 adults or is there children in the mix too? That would make a difference for me.

I wouldn't buy it no, I don't think it's good value and it doesn't feel special enough for a normal sunday roast let alone Christmas day. I brought a 2kg chicken from the butchers yesterday for less that £11.

@ChickenChristmasDinner
I know not everyone likes turkey but there are many other options.

  1. 3 bird roast
  2. A turkey crown- you can get nice stuffed ones as well.
  3. A small whole turkey
  4. A goose

It seems very odd to choose the cheapest and smallest option for what it a meal for guests. Unless that's your budget.

Edited

What's wrong with a chicken if that's what they'd prefer?

And I'm not being funny, but most of your alternative options there appear to involve turkey.

OhDearMuriel · 02/11/2025 08:40

What a weird question.
Why not go for an extra large which would be double in size.

midlifeattheoasis · 02/11/2025 08:52

@ChickenChristmasDinner

Why don't you buy two chickens?

2 out of 4 include turkey

You need leftovers for sandwiches and Boxing Day.

Why?

@ChickenChristmasDinner only you know the appetites of the people eating so it's pointless to ask on here.

I can't imagine wanting re-heated, pre-cooked chicken in a sugar marinade for Christmas, but you do you, I guess Confused

Some people can’t imagine being so rude to someone just because they don’t like the same thing as them… but you do you I guess!

2 out of 4 include turkey

A three bird roast could easily include turkey also

liveforsummer · 02/11/2025 09:33

A whole chicken (I’m sure there are normally about 1.6kg) does me and my 2 dc for a normal Sunday dinner with plenty sides. There might be a little left over for sandwiches or soup but never enough to make another meal. I can’t imagine trying to stretch 1kg (is that even a thing) between 5. Either get a bigger one, get 2 or serve a second meat such as a gammon joint

This cannot be about money as a bigger uncooked chicken would be cheaper – a lot cheaper if @ChickenChristmasDinner is not bothered about free range. And even the cooking time would not be that much longer – I reckon a 2kg chicken will roast in about 90 mins and the OP is roasting this pre-cooked one for an hour.

I agree the OP can cook what they and their family want for Christmas dinner but I am still staggered at the idea of a 1kg chicken, when a pack of two chicken breasts is usually about a third of that weight.

It doesn’t sound like it’s about money it sounds like it’s about OPs preference. They like the chicken they usually have

123teenagerfood · 02/11/2025 09:35

I usually roast a 2kg chicken for 3 of us, teenager and husband have a leg and thigh, i have the brown meat, we then all have lunch for two days from it and a main meal the next day. I think 1kg is enough, as i assume there will be sides.

Alpacajigsaw · 02/11/2025 09:37

Why wouldn’t you just buy a slightly bigger chicken?

Coconutter24 · 02/11/2025 09:39

I can’t believe the amount of people being rude and making jokes about OPs choice of chicken! They like a certain chicken and there’s nothing wrong with that 🤷‍♀️ Some people out there don’t even get a Christmas dinner, some people don’t even a home to spend Christmas in but let’s all laugh cos OP wants to buy a £6.50 chicken!

Op I would get two of the chickens you like just to make sure there is plenty for everyone. I never find there’s enough meat on a whole chicken for 4 of us so definitely go for two if money isn’t an issue.

Yesimmoaningaboutbenefits · 02/11/2025 09:51

As a family of 5, we buy a 1.3kg chicken for a normal Sunday roast and now the kids are teen/pre-teens it's not really enough. It'll do, but we do need bigger.
(I keep meaning to order the next size up but the 1.3kg is favourited and I forget.)

Id go for at least the 1.7kg chicken for 5 for Christmas.

zingally · 02/11/2025 10:32

Just... buy a bigger one...?

That happened to me one Christmas not many years ago. Thought it was just going to be me, DH and my mum, so got a chicken. Then sister and her partner announced they were coming last minute. I made it stretch, but just barely!!

Angelou79 · 02/11/2025 11:50

I do 2kg for 3!!

Angelou79 · 02/11/2025 11:56

You could easily fit 2 of those on same shelf in oven, so I would do 2. I follow Jamie Oliver recipe for chicken & it’s always brilliant & makes tasty gravy.

OneNewLeader · 02/11/2025 11:57

Depends on the appetites and ages, but I’d say no. If you went a bit larger you’d have enough and any left, soup/curry/pasta option.

Why is it rude to give your opinion?

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 02/11/2025 12:17

1 kg chicken would be fine on any other day. But Christmas? seems a bit stingy to me (I’m also a huge fan of leftovers). But it primarily depends on your side dishes / the amount of courses etc.

If you have appetisers, first course/soup, chicken with sides followed by cheese and pudding? 1 kg chicken would be more than enough, I suspect. Unless you happen to be feeding 5 teenage boys / young men.

I don't like dark meat at all so prefer the breast. Weird I know

All breast here as well

An opinion isn’t always rude but the way you deliver it can make it rude. There’s plenty of opinions on this thread and more of them are rude than not rude

ginasevern · 02/11/2025 13:05

ItsNeverNoReason · 01/11/2025 18:20

No one really wants a chicken leg for Christmas dinner. Just buy a pack of 5 chicken breasts.

I certainly wouldn't serve up just a chicken leg and no white meat for Christmas lunch.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 02/11/2025 13:08

I don’t think it’s big enough.

Off topic but a leg each for two people and a whole breast each for the other two doesn’t seem like fair distribution? In our family, the leg lovers would always have a bit of breast too, because there’s not much meat on a leg.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 02/11/2025 13:53

Owly11 · 01/11/2025 20:05

You are literally the first person i have ever heard of who would rather have a dry chicken breast than a nice juicy leg.

If your chicken breast is dry, you're cooking it incorrectly
