To think 11:35 is too late to trick or treat

Last night I had three boys knock the door at 11:35pm. I was hesitant open the door as I thought it was weird to knock so late but as I still had some sweets left I answered it. It had been over 2 hours since the last ones and I found it quite inappropriate to do it so late. Would you find it rude that late?

Well obviously it is.

Did you still have decorations out/lights on? If you did you are still advertising yourself as open for business though. We have one lantern and I took that down at 7.30.

My window lights were on yes but the pumpkins had burned out. I didn’t expect anyone else after about 9:30.

Wow erm yes that is too late

But no way would I have answered the door at that time either!

RealChristmasBaby · 01/11/2025 17:42

How old were they?

Jellybunny56 · 01/11/2025 17:45

It is too late and I wouldn’t have answered the door.
We only opened the door until 8pm ish, then we took all the decs in and the few that tried after 8:30 were ignored.

BCBird · 01/11/2025 17:45

My cousin had 6 at her door. It's getting out of hand in my opinion. How did it become so big?

FuzzyWolf · 01/11/2025 17:47

Were they actual trick and treaterers or were they on their way home from the pub and trying their luck to get some sweets?

Yes, I agree that it’s too late. General etiquette around here is to go early (once dark) and only go to decorated houses with pumpkins.

OnlyOnAFriday · 01/11/2025 17:48

I’d have gone absolutely ape shit at them to be honest. I’d have been in bed and they’d have woken me and the dog up!

steff13 · 01/11/2025 17:48

What time was it supposed to be? Here in the US each town schedules it, and people stick to that. In my city it was 6p-8p.

TeenToTwenties · 01/11/2025 17:50

Anything after 8pm is too late.
See also not wearing a costume.

Hankunamatata · 01/11/2025 17:50

9.30pm is my limit.

ThejoyofNC · 01/11/2025 17:51

Not a chance I'd be answering the door to trick-or-treaters at that time of night unless it was to tell them to go home and leave people alone. And I love festivities.

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 01/11/2025 17:51

8pm is late enough and IMO primary age and under, in costume. Not teens with a half-arsed effort coming in squads late at night.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/11/2025 17:58

Way too late. I would guess the odd vote or two for YABU are either mistakes or that you shouldn’t have opened the door that late.

CeciliaMars · 01/11/2025 18:01

Round here, we trick or treat between about 5.30-8pm then the sweets run out and we all turn off the lights!

Sid9nie · 01/11/2025 18:02

I took in the pumpkin at 7 30. There was no one after 7pm in our street.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 01/11/2025 18:03

You have to ask?

WomanOfSteel · 01/11/2025 18:12

I thought our last one was far too late at 9.50. It was a little boy and his dad. The dad had only just got home from work and had promised to take his son out. 🙄

SparkyBlue · 01/11/2025 18:24

8ish would be my limit. It was lashing rain here from about 6.30 so no one called after that. I’m surprised to read that people take in their decorations. Everything is still outside all the houses around here

Here people take in the decorations when they don't want anyone else knocking.
It works well because people who don't want any trick or treaters don't have any decorations, pumpkins etc. and they only knock on doors where there are obvious Halloween decorations and lights outside.

BusySpinningPlates · 01/11/2025 18:35

I had some late trick or treaters (after 11pm) as well - they had costumes on, and I was still downstairs, but had taken decorations / candles in (but left the pumpkins outside as didnt want to bring them in). I didn’t open the door (no way, at that time), but I said “sorry, it’s too late” through the door, and that was fine..

I wonder if you live near me, and it was the same ones!

Newsenmum · 01/11/2025 18:36

DiscoBob · 01/11/2025 18:38

I wouldn't answer the door to trick or treaters after about 8pm. I'd take my decor down then also to deter them.

RiseOfTheTeenyTinies · 01/11/2025 18:38

We had one knock at about 8.30 and I ignored that as I thought it was too late. I was fast asleep by 11.35!

Allmarbleslost · 01/11/2025 18:48

Well I was in bed asleep at that time so I would definitely have found it too late!
