Why do people put their Xmas trees etc up now then take them down Boxing Day

If they say that they are sick n tired of the sight of them or find it difficult to clean around them.

Don’t put the tree up early then!

I find it odd too @Beon Some people on here wear it like a badge of honour that they take their Christmas tree down on Boxing Day. Wink Like it makes them somehow superior.

I say 'on here' (Mumsnet) because I don't know one person in real life who does this. Most people wait til between 2nd and 7th January. It's batshit taking the tree/decorations down on Boxing Day. It's still Christmas FFS.

It makes much more sense (IMO) to have the tree and decorations up from 1st December to 5th January, than, say 23rd November to 26th December. As I said 26th December/Boxing Day is still firmly in the Christmas holiday period.

I prefer to put my tree up no earlier than the 20th, and I keep it up until at least Epiphany although it's liturgically valid to consider it still Christmas until Candlemas which is 40 days after Christmas.

The main problem used to be that it was difficult to get a good tree on 20th December as the shops only have stocks that were felled weeks previously are pretty much dead by then. However now I have found a good Christmas Tree farm where I can choose a tree in November and tie a 'do not cut' notice on it, and it gets felled when I want it and not a moment sooner.

Advent for me, like Lent, is a time of quiet anticipation and contemplation. It's like the hush when the house lights dim before the orchestra starts playing. It enhances the festival to have a defined space of this-is-not-festival before it.

Not all of us celebrate Advent (or Lent) so have different traditions.

MaplePumpkin · 01/11/2025 14:19

I do, because it’s my house and I want to.

Although I’m usually mid November and take it down a couple of days after Boxing Day, is that still no good for you?

And I don’t take it down because I’m bored of it I’ll be honest, I take it down because for me, Christmas is over once Boxing Day is. I love the season and I start early, but it’s all about the anticipation and the run up for me, once it’s done it’s done. I don’t watch Christmas films or anything like that after Boxing Day either, as the season is over (for me).

It's a christian festival.

LividArse · 01/11/2025 14:20

I like the run up to Christmas, but once He’s been down the chimney I am DONE. And I have to work around a small child being at his dad’s because it’s a nightmare if he “helps”.

This year I’m solo from 11am Christmas Day and it will honestly be a battle to not spend the time taking all the stuff down and getting decluttered.

MirandaWest · 01/11/2025 14:24

I find it odd when trees get taken down straight after Christmas as we generally don’t see family members until about the 27th and would be odd to not have a tree up.

I'm an early December until 6th January type of person but do appreciate other people so things differently

But you celebrate Christmas 🤔. Advent is the preparation for Christmas, lent is the preparation for the down of good Friday followed by the up of Easter and presume Eid is the natural follow on from Ramadan.

We put our decorations up once school holidays finish - most come down on 12th night and a few things are left until Candlemas.

Did I at any point claim that everyone should do it my way? I described what is important to me. Of course you can do your own thing.

I put mine up beginning/middle of December and keep it up until the 2nd/3rd of Jan

You would think.

But so many people lack any modicum of common sense.

I don't really start watching xmas films till xmas eve. It's so busy with work & school in the run up that i have no time.

Obviously they can do it when they want but I always feel sorry for the children of parents who do this. One of my favourite memories of childhood Christmas was the excitement when the tree went up the week before, because it meant Christmas Day was nearly here. I loved getting up on dark mornings and going downstairs to see the twinkling lights. That excitement is lost for children when the tree goes up too early. I also think that for a lot of parents it’s so they can put it on SM.

You can feel sorry for my child but not because the tree is going up early, it's going up because we have been told that this is likely to be his last Christmas. He's 5. We have been told to do the things we want to do with him in the next six months because after that he's unlikely to have the strength to enjoy them. I am sure people will drive past the house, see the tree up and make judgements but what they won't know is that inside our house is a child on borrowed time.

We celebrate time off work, parties, presents, family time and too much food and drink!

Exemptfromcontent · 01/11/2025 14:29

I don’t put mine up now but I do put it up fairly early (second week of November usually) because I love Christmas time, the kids find it exciting - but DDs birthday is NYE. So I tend to take our tree down on the 27th/28th so we can have a few days of ‘normal’ before her birthday. My mums birthday is the day before and she grew up hating her birthday as it was strongly linked to Christmas, joint gifts, Christmas wrapping on birthday presents ect.. and having read a lot of the same opinions online I want to try and make DDs birthday her special day and not Christmas related 🤣

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/11/2025 14:29

I think it’s to do with the way shops, advertising etc approach each season.

It’s like there always has to be a season on at any given time - we can’t have any “ordinary”
periods of time.

And the result seems to be that Christmas has been brought forward almost to join with Halloween (which itself seems to need a season these days!)

CremeBruhlee · 01/11/2025 14:30

We tend to put it up the 3rd weekend of November as our villages local Christmas events start the first weekend of December (along with all the kids clubs and school Christmas parties and events) and the weekend before is a close family members birthday.

I really enjoy making it a lazy day with Christmas music and snacks and decorating the whole house. We wouldn’t have as much time once Dec hits. The kids LOVE it!

I don’t take them down Boxing Day but do take them down before new year because we have time off work and all enjoy the fresh start element to New Year and tend to enjoy decluttering and finding new places for new gifts for Christmas.

Same as others have said though that I’m not bored of it but it fits better for us

Every one has different opinions and traditions - there isn’t a right or wrong - it’s up to individual families. Is that a problem?

No but what i said still stands. It's still Christmas until 6 Jan

We celebrate the Christmas period from Sinterklaas to Boxing Day.

cottonwoolie · 01/11/2025 14:32

@Parker231 I wouldn't class them as different traditions!

ThankYouNigel · 01/11/2025 14:32

I agree in the sense I prefer to have ours up longer after so our children can enjoy it for the whole Xmas hols (we host over NY too). So we put ours up first week of Dec then take it down end of Xmas hols. If I got sick of it I’d rather put it up mid-Dec/closer to Xmas and still have it up longer after. Doesn’t bother me what others do though.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 01/11/2025 14:32

I totally agree. It’s nuts.

No, when I was a child (and until I was precisely 27), I was excited about Christmas from September and couldn't wait to put up the decorations (my job from being very young because I insisted!). I loved them and felt really sad when I had to put them away....I'd put them away really carefully, thinking about how excited I'd be to see them the following year.
