If they say that they are sick n tired of the sight of them or find it difficult to clean around them.

Don’t put the tree up early then!

We put our tree up as the family are winding down for the christmas break, work and school slows down. So the week before teens break up from school.

We are not religious in a formal way but I have hippy tendencies from time to time and enjoy the celebrations and reflection that the Christian faith gives over Christmas. Carols sung by well practised choirs in churches are transcending.

The tree is a family event, with decorations made by the kids over the years with memories and laughter with a lot of what goes on the tree. And Christmas itself is a time we are all off, no shopping or usual chores or clubs, it isn’t “over” on Boxing Day nor does it start in November.

Santa is not the one who brings magic to our house for Christmas, even when the kids were young they still had presents unopened under the tree on Boxing Day. It seems insane to me to be “right cone on you were too slow get these presents opened mum wants to dismantle the tree to vacuum now”

Personally I find having a tree up longer than the summer holidays doesn’t make those couple of weeks during the darkest time of the year special.

We have fairy lights up in the house all year round, they are pretty. So I understand that Christmas trees are pretty and cheer up a room. But you can do that and still not put a tree up beginning of November.

To me it is insane, I know it hurts no one, and trying to have a discussion about it is interesting. I understand people who might not have family around this Christmas putting a tree up early. And I understand for many the only parts of Christmas they enjoy are before the 25th, then want it over, that I don’t understand as much. But the whole of November is beyond my comprehension.

I don't know but it irrationally pisses me of to.

Me too.
Isn’t the Christmas season traditionally carried through the New Year to January 6th, Little Christmas or Women’s Christmas (here in Ireland) ?
It’s now like the US ☹️

MyNimbleBrickCritic · 02/11/2025 10:01

Because they want to.

It’s carried through to January if you want it to - there aren’t rules we must obey

Mine goes up the last Sunday in November (which is the 30th this year).

I enjoy having the Christmas stuff out during the whole build-up to the day. The pretty lights bring a bit of joy to an otherwise dark and miserable month!

It comes down New Years Day.

TheChicDreamer · 02/11/2025 11:00

I agree op and I have a whole load of judgy opinions about it, which I won’t share here because ultimately it’s up to individuals to observe whatever traditions they like.

But I have to admit I’m a bit of a staunch traditionalist when it comes to Christmas; I believe in delayed gratification as well as the act of seeing the Christmas season as a prolonged event that isn’t over as soon as Christmas dinner is eaten and presents opened.

I agree. Delayed gratification is so much more satisfying!

When we did a real tree we did last weekend in November but now we do the first weekend after the 11th (DHs late DM birthday and she was very much involved with Rememberance Day) but I don’t take it down until after New Year’s

Hedjwitch · 02/11/2025 12:04

I'm tempted not to have a tree at all this year. Dcs are grown up,parents are dead. The season doesn't really hold any joy anymore for me personally. I used to love it and really throw myself into it but seriously can't be arsed any more.

No - IL and Dmum are like that some years.

I think we'll just do christmas lights when they no longer come home or when they hit adulthood youngest is 16. Save having to fight the cats with the christmas tree and tinsel.

I think we'd still try and enjoy the period but it will look very different.

I don't think that's misery guts at all. I'm more baffled by the people that hate their Christmas decorations so much that they are really happy to take them down (and clean). Why not just scale them back or skip them if that works better for you?

I don’t think people are saying they hate their decorations, just that they are taking them down when their Christmas is over.

Why doea it need to he that black and white?

I don't 'hate' my Christmas decorations! I have a tree and a few bits and bobs around the house but not much. There isn't really anything to scale back on. I love them.

But I also like to put them away when they've been up for 4 weeks and get the house clean and tidy before going back to work and the new year starts.

FreeTheOakTree · 02/11/2025 14:28

I have noticed that those who put theirs up early, and take them down once Christmas dinner dishes are put away, announce it on SM.

How would we know otherwise?

I personally, couldn't care less but have noticed the photos of piles of gifts and the early tree are the same folk who then post about it all being 'done and dusted' by Boxing day.

Each to their own, but it is indicative of a society that has to have something to look forward to. I am not in judgement of it, just find it part of our hurried lives...

Christmas isn't in November, I think most people know this, but the shops are full of it once October ends, so no wonder some throw themselves into it and are fed up once the Turkey digests.

ginasevern · 02/11/2025 16:07

@deeahgwitch "Isn’t the Christmas season traditionally carried through the New Year to January 6th"

My mother always kept our tree and trimmings up until 6th January and I continue that tradition. Neighbours used to say she was courting bad luck because 12th night was the 5th Jan, but she insisted it was midnight on the 6th. She was a Catholic so not sure if that has a bearing on it or if she was just plain wrong!

Doesn't your family have jobs. Christmas day and boxing day are public holidays. Christmas eve is a normal working day

But it's not really, in most places people finish early on Christmas Eve. Of course not everyone has this luxury, but I don't know anyone who works a full day on Christmas Eve. (or on New Year's Eve)

which is why it's a waste to take them as a day off😂

CinnamonBuns67 · 02/11/2025 17:53

I put mine up 12 days before christmas and take it down 12 days after christmas but it's really no skin off my nose what anyone else does with theirs. So don't really see why it matters to you?

In my current job, we are forced to take Christmas eve as annual leave, even if you want to work it!

In my old job (public sector) we used to send people home from 3pm, a few people every half hour but we needed to keep people until closing time when the out of hours service took over, so it was definitely not guaranteed you'd get to leave earlier.

lilkitten · 02/11/2025 17:59

I guess they must like the build-up to Christmas, but not Christmas itself? I put up the decorations somewhere in the first two weeks of Dec, but I keep them up til 6th Jan. For me New Year is still part of the Christmas holidays. If they're up early I guess it can get boring, but it's as if they only like Christmas Day and not the rest of the holidays

We'll be working until 4 on Christmas Eve, but we run a shop. Also I don't expect to have a full day off during December. After the shop is shut on Xmas Eve we'll probably go for a quick cocktail to celebrate, and I could do with a lie-in on Christmas Day but the DC will probably be up at 6

pokewoman · 02/11/2025 18:06

We go to my parents for Xmas so we put ours out the last weekend of November to enjoy them! On the rare year we fo stay at home, we take them down the day after boxing day. For me, Christmas is 1-26th December. After that we are looking towards new year.

Foryourpiesonly · 02/11/2025 18:19

I think it's sad that for hundreds of years we had rituals and traditions, stuff that meant something to us and what it is to be human, not necessarily even the religious aspect. Things like stir up Sunday, putting the family y sixpence in the pudding, making decorations with the children, putting the tree up on a certain day tied in with that because of the anticipation and satisfaction we got from delayed gratification. I think it's sad that there's a general idea of well we've done on the 25th we gotta get back to work type thing, I mean I get it but it's sad.

Whyamiherenow · 02/11/2025 18:53

We put our decorations up the last Saturday in November that we have DH daughter with us. She comes alternate weekends. So in three weeks. We will have all the decorations up. We will probably take them down just after new year. That weekend. They won’t make it to twelfth night.

I love all the decorations. Easter massive. Halloween massive. Christmas more than massive.

The dusting is annoying to achieve to a good standard so I lower my standards!

ColdWaterDipper · 02/11/2025 19:12

I do find it a bit odd when people put their trees up in November, but I suppose that’s because we’ve never had a plastic tree so if we tried to do that it would probably look awful by Christmas Day. We put our cut tree up on the first weekend in December, and take it down on twelfth night. Our potted tree comes in the week before Christmas and stays in til twelfth night (as he doesn’t like to be inside for too long). My parents think we are ridiculous putting ours up big cut tree up so early, as they would typically get theirs just a week or so before Christmas, but I suppose it’s just a generational thing. I love the house being Christmassy and decorated for all of December and over new year (we usually have friends over for Ny and all the children sleep in the sitting room with the twinkly Christmas lights on and it’s magical - the adults get drunk in the other sitting room 😆).
