Why do people put their Xmas trees etc up now then take them down Boxing Day

If they say that they are sick n tired of the sight of them or find it difficult to clean around them.

Don’t put the tree up early then!

Because they want to. Not sure there’s any other answer.

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 02/11/2025 20:28

I put mine up at the end of August when Sainsbury's, and Poundland get their new range of Chrissie decorations in.

I have an old platic artificial sparkly tree from Woolworths.

Take it down a week after Valentines Day. Tie all.my cards on the branches..

The cats love it.

Meeooow.

I get that it's because they want to and to each their own. But I really enjoy the low key days between Christmas and New Year's, eating chocolates and not doing much. It wouldn't feel the same without the deccies up.

It's a christian festival.

For you maybe, for a lot of people it's a festival of light, close to Dec 21st, when days start to get longer. It's family time in the darkest part of the year, for food, gifts and time off work (for some)
For others it's Christmas, sparkle and parties, but not religious at all
All are valid

TheZanyZebra · 01/11/2025 15:41

of course Christmas is over on Boxing Day. That's the whole point.
Celebrate until Easter if you like, no one is stopping you, but don't tell people they must keep on with Christmas once the day has past.

Well, there's no 'of course' about it. Presumably you've heard of the twelve days of Christmas? I haven't noticed anyone on this thread telling people they have to prolong Christmas if they don't want to, but 'Christmas is over on Boxing Day' is an opinion, not a fact.

For many of us the best bit is between Christmas and New Year, all the stressful preparation is over and a lot of us have time off work to just relax and enjoy the festivities. Tbh I've never understood why those who declare Christmas is over after Boxing Day are in such a hurry to get things back to being exactly how they are most of the year round. Of course they should do exactly what they want to in their own homes (and I also realise a lot depends on whether or not people have to work over the festive season), I just don't get the rush to return to the humdrum and the workaday.

mamagogo1 · 02/11/2025 21:04

I agree op. Mine goes up in mid December, down after 12th night

Chipsahoy · 02/11/2025 21:05

We always put them up straight after thanksgiving, (American family) do it slowly. A few decorations. The first tree the following week, the big tree first December. Mine all stay up until around 5th or 6th. The real tree sometimes has to go out before then though if it’s dropping needles as it’s potted, we then plant it one of the fields.
I don’t consider what anyone else does. It just what we do. Why does it matter what other people do when it doesn’t cause harm?

SevenYellowHammers · 02/11/2025 21:27

Because Christmas is commercialised and it’s all about selling in the months beforehand. Christmas decorations should go up on Christmas Eve until 12th night but because the hard sell starts in October, people start early and are sick of it all by Boxing Day. I even know people who put a fake tree up in November and then replace with a real tree in December. To be clear, people can do what they want in their homes but I, personally, think starting so early is childish and silly. Advent is supposed to be a dark time building up to the light not a load of tat stuck up too early and then taken down once the first holiday ad comes on. I hate that there’s no carols after Christmas Day. Each to their own, but as a Christian, I believe that advent means that Christmas should be anticipated and longed for, then cherished and celebrated fully.

Kittykatmoo · 02/11/2025 21:50

In many countries, they keep them until the 6th of January, that's what I do, because I want to, and I know someone who even takes longer to take it down, you can do whatever you want with the three.

vickylou78 · 02/11/2025 22:14

I find it really strange that people take decorations down on boxing day or the 27th.....that's peak Christmas! We are still celebrating then and watching Christmas films and having extended family and friends over to celebrate. Would be a bit of a sad celebration with no decorations up! It seems mad to go to all the effort of decorating for only 1 day!! I enjoy mine for the full 12 days of Christmas and take them down on 5th January.

Not everyone is still celebrating then though. It also isn't just 1 day, it's simply not the same days as you. That's all.

My hairdresser put hers up mid October. Fucking bananas

Missj25 · 02/11/2025 23:31

Or mine 🙌 .
We’re putting up ours tomorrow 😊..
Miserable darkness outside , we love looking at the lights and bright cheeriness it adds to our house ..
Infact I have fairy lights all around my bureau in hall , around a cabinet in my sitting room, & around the bookcase aswel all year round ..
Bright , cheery & cosy ☺️

I agree OP. The days that now get termed 'Twixmas' (basically all the days of real Christmas between the 25th and NYE) have lost a bit of their sparkle because so many people have now decided that once the commercial side of Christmas is over, then it's time to put the decs down.

Why has it lost a bit of their sparkle just because of when some other people decide to take their tree and decorations down? If yours are still up during that time, surely it still has its sparkle without everyone else having to do the same as you?

Why on earth does what other people do at Christmas affect your own Christmas? That's ridiculous. I will never understand why some people care what others do.

Obviously they can do it when they want but I always feel sorry for the children of parents who do this. One of my favourite memories of childhood Christmas was the excitement when the tree went up the week before, because it meant Christmas Day was nearly here. I loved getting up on dark mornings and going downstairs to see the twinkling lights. That excitement is lost for children when the tree goes up too early. I also think that for a lot of parents it’s so they can put it on SM.

Totally disagree! We put the tree up in the last weekend of November and we were so excited about it. To be fair, the Christmas events all kick off around then anyway. We do the same now, and we take the tree down pretty soon after Christmas. For us, the excitement is in the run-up, and when it's over it's over!

Harmonypus · 03/11/2025 01:11

Personally, I haven't had a tree up at xmas in almost 20yrs, but I've just moved house and I'm being badgered to have a tree this year.
I'm not really interested in having one, but just to shut everyone up, I'll put a very small one up as late as possible on 24/12 and it'll be down and back in its box very early on 26/12 (if I can be bothered to leave it up that long!)

stonegirl · 03/11/2025 07:25

My daughters birthday is 7th January and when she was little she liked them up for her party! So the tradition has stayed with us even though she is grown up. We like it!!

I guess for me I don't usually finish work until Christmas eve so I want to enjoy it for a bit before taking it all down, 2 days just isn't enough. Maybe the people taking it down early have lots of time off work before Christmas or something? And they celebrate before Christmas? But for me we celebrate actually at Christmas!

Agree with this.

People.just do what suits them and their families. It's up to you if you get caught up in Christmas Eve boxes, Elf.on the Shelf.and Twixmas.

I didn't and don't really understand it but what other people.do has no bearing on me.

My personal.feeling is that October is too early but if the people who do it like it, what's the problem?

Twixtmas is one of the best bits of Christmas for me. Am usually working flat out up to Christmas itself as well as juggling buying, wrapping and delivering presents, decorating, school events, work party, client Christmas events, church events. It's manic and then so lovely to have a more relaxed time for a few days - usually have that week off work and love sitting at home enjoying the twinkly lights and the books I've been given and not rushing around all stressed. We save some of the Christmas traditions for that week - panto, light trail, visiting grandparents and usually have a little party for our neighbours and local friends.

Anyone who says to me that Christmas is over by Boxing Day gets told "not in our house".

I take down the tree on twelfth night but gradually remove all the decorations between new years day and twelfth night. I'm a traditionalist but even i admit that it doesn't really seem like Christmas any more once new years day has passed and we are getting ready to return to work and school!

the "12 days of Christmas" is not something that exit for many people, that's the point. It's more than an opinion to believe that Christmas is over when Christmas is.. gone

For many of us the best bit is between Christmas and New Year
that's great, but for many of us, it's either going back to work, or take the kids on holiday or doing a million other things.

I just don't get the rush to return to the humdrum and the workaday.
because most of our year is not like that? There's winter skiing to look forward to, then there's Easter holidays, kids have a break in May and that's another holiday, plus the summer to start organising, and the many birthdays that are coming.

Christmas is not that special, it's a fun month with all the parties and everything, but it's not more special than any of the other events and holidays of the year. No need to make it last longer than necessary
