If they say that they are sick n tired of the sight of them or find it difficult to clean around them.

Don’t put the tree up early then!

Ours went up today and will come down on boxing day because it's my house and that's what I want to do? I always find it odd that people get so worked up about something like this.

Once Christmas day is over, as far as I'm concerned, Christmas is over as all of our celebrations are done with. Boxing day is just a normal day for us.

What do you do with all the food and drink. Do you manage to see all family in the one day. Do you make the kids put all there new toys away. I never understand how someone who loves Christmas so much wants it to be over so fast. Im not having a go I'm just genuinely curious.

We usually see family on Christmas Eve/Day. Why would I make them put the toys away?

By boxing day, we'll have some food/drink leftover but we don't have any special meals on boxing day like xmas eve and xmas day. Considering it starts for us pretty much now with decorations, tree, music etc and doesn't stop until boxing day, I'd say that's a long time celebrating something you love.

Sorry, but what food? It's only a couple of days, it' s not necessary to plan tons of food and have tons of leftovers, you know how many people will be there for lunch and diner, you plan accordingly. I don't have much leftovers?

Doesn't your family have jobs. Christmas day and boxing day are public holidays. Christmas eve is a normal working day

It starts now? It’s the 1st of November!

Of course. Some family members are retired, some get xmas eve off or if not I see them xmas day instead or some finish early xmas eve like myself because they can be flexible to a certain degree.

It does for us! Tree up today, decorations, songs etc.

Billybobranaway · 01/11/2025 23:17

We started putting our christmas tree up in November (last 2 weeks or less) to help our pets. We start with a just a naked tree, then a few days later we turn on the lights and a few days later we add the tree skirt and so on until the tree is fully decorated. This has meant that neither our cat or dog have damaged our tree or decorations. We do also keep the tree up until January. It also helps our disabled child manage the change.

Yawn. Same threads every year.
TLDR:
Early decorators = poor white trash.
Traditional decorators = stuck up snobs.

KimberleyClark · 02/11/2025 00:57

Kills the magic for me. It is not fucking Christmas until December.

HeyThereDelila · 02/11/2025 01:07

Because they’re idiots who don’t understand the seasons or meanings of Advent or Christmas. Tree goes up here around the 20th Dec and comes down on epiphany.

Goldfoxwife · 02/11/2025 03:45

Lol if it helps I haven't put my tree up in 2 years I haven't done anything at all when I did I put it up 12 dec down 12 January

You’re assuming that everyone does it your way and follows the traditions of advent and epiphany - some of us have our own family traditions around the Christmas holiday celebrations.

WhatNoRaisins · 02/11/2025 07:31

I get tweaking traditions to suit your family and circumstances but the 01/11-25/12 tradition seems less like following a tradition and more like following shallow consumerism.

Ihopeithinkiknow · 02/11/2025 07:36

I always do because it’s my daughters birthday on the 30th and I grew up with having my birthday in December lost to Christmas so I don’t want my daughter to just be a second thought on her birthday

isthesolution · 02/11/2025 08:17

because they want to 🤷‍♀️

Wiltedgeranium · 02/11/2025 08:56

What i used to like as a kid, was the anticipation. But also the markers along the way.
1st Nov all souls' day- so usually mass in school.
Then remembrance day.
Then there was the slow burn to December- where you wanted to be excited, but not yet.
Then the advent calendar- so you knew it was coming, but life still normal and not yet. Although you were prepping for Xmas play.
Then the tree went up and you could go full throttle.

Now it's halloweenbonfirexmas.

WeeGeeBored · 01/11/2025 22:03

Of course not. But it’s one way. And for many getting out the tree and old ornaments and decorations is loaded with memories unique to that activity.

I can think of many easier ways in November to cheer myself up that are not related to Christmas. People these days just want instant gratification & kids aren't allowed to be bored for a minute

ConnieHeart · 02/11/2025 09:08

Potatoelephant · 01/11/2025 20:54

Same with me. My tree come down on 27th because my dad died on 28th. When it goes up varies but never earlier than first weekend in December

My dad died on Christmas Eve (great timing, Dad! 🤣). But i do Christmas as normal, he wasn't ever the biggest fan of Christmas and neither am I. I like the day itself as we are all together but I don't get particularly excited, well no more than anything else I enjoy in life, and there are plenty of things.

IsntItDarkOut · 02/11/2025 09:13

If that’s what you want to do then fine. I know someone who does this and is so incredibly smug about it like they are doing something amazing or clever. I mean if everyone did it would they put them up in October?

GreyCarpet · 02/11/2025 09:18

We put our tree up the first Saturday in December and take it down before NYE when I like to have a big deep clean of the house and go into the New Year with everything all fresh, tidy and clean.

But we're not Chrsitian and so Christmas itself doesn't really hold any particular significance to us. We do it for family, social and cultural reasons.

We don't spend silly money on food, presents or decorating the house either so it's not about the commercialism for us. I just prefer the run up to Christmas and all the events and social things. Christmas is over by Boxing Day for us.

I wouldn't start any of it before December though.

My dad died on New Year’s Eve and there is no way he would want us to take down our tree in memory of that day. Life is for the living, as he would say.

Yes yes they would put them up in October.

It’s to get the most likes on social media. Because by 14th December strangers are bored of clicking like on all the pictures of average Christmas trees.

I don’t know anyone who shares Christmas photos on social media. We have a WhatsApp group for DH, DT’s and I and another for the wider family - my and DH’s parents and our siblings and their DC’s.
i’m only interested in our family photos at Christmas and not some random stranger.
