Why do people put their Xmas trees etc up now then take them down Boxing Day

If they say that they are sick n tired of the sight of them or find it difficult to clean around them.

Don’t put the tree up early then!

We put it up about the 14th December and take it down on 28th/29th. Christmas, for me, is done then. I honestly couldn't imagine having a Christmas tree up for 2 months.

BarbaraKirksKaftan · 01/11/2025 15:54

I won’t put my tree up till the last weekend in November. Once Xmas day is over I’m done with Christmas and I would feel the same way if the tree had been up 4 weeks or 4 days.

Abracadabra12345 · 01/11/2025 16:41

I love autumn too much to hijack it. Autumn is squeezed out early enough as it is

I also love Christmas but not until December

youalright · 01/11/2025 17:12

Im just surprised how many people aren't celebrating Christmas still on boxing day. It would be like going on holiday to Spain packing your suitcase 2 months in advanced posting about it all over social media repeatedly telling everyone how excited you are about your holiday and then catching a flight home the next day or worse the evening you've arrived.

We try to celebrate Boxing Day like a 2nd Xmas day. However, for some reason it just never feels quite the same as Xmas day. It feels a bit like an anticlimax, slightly depressing and the build up has gone with adverts on the telly advertising January sales rather than Xmas stuff. The whole market just seems to want to rush everyone along to the next thing straight away. But yes we do celebrate Boxing Day, we don’t class Xmas as being ‘over’ and we just make the most of it.

We always used to have a big Xmas party at my paternal grandparents on Boxing day when I was a kid
It's a bit different now because it's my oldest sons birthday, but it's still part of the Xmas period!

KnickerlessParsons · 01/11/2025 17:39

The 12 days of Christmas are after Christmas, not before. And certainly not in November.

It really wouldn't. Every country doesn't celebrate "boxing day" for a start, so most people don't even know about it.

Christmas is one day. Most of us still have a full month of "Christmas related " events, Christmas do, kids many many Christmas parties, the nativity, Panto, the Grotto, Christmas lights... leading on to Christmas.

Then we have a big party for Christmas Eve, then Christmas Day. When that's done, time to move on, we've done Christmas 😂

Even if traditionally it lasts longer, most people go back to work, kids go back to school, and it would feel weird for many of us to still have the old Christmas decorations. Time to move on!

But if you took it down on 6th January (traditional date) it would have only been up for 3 weeks.

And then your children stop wanting to do panto and Father Christmas or even spend Christmas with you. Perhaps at that stage people adjust from making it all one long child-centred hype.

stargirl1701 · 01/11/2025 19:26

It is bizarre. They don’t do Easter Egg hunts in February which is analogous.

Ours goes up on Christmas Eve and comes down at Epiphany. It is traditional to keep it up until Candlemas in February.

we had a life before having children, we'll just have the same life back once they grow up. But it's true, before children, December was just one big party after another 😂

Christmas illuminations, Christmas lights, Christmas markets, December city breaks, it really doesn't need to be child-centred, it's just more difficult to do when you have kids and frankly should have priority.

It was also easier to get rid of the tree on Boxing Day before children

Doing an Easter Egg hunt is analogous to opening Christmas gifts. Which most people don't do until Christmas, regardless of how early they decorate.

Don’t go giving people any ideas 😂
Shops are already displaying Easter eggs on shelves as soon as Christmas is over these days

TheZanyZebra · 01/11/2025 19:36

Some people fully decorate their houses for Easter, that's not new. Easter egg hunts happen a lot before Easter too - which makes sense, places make more money if they attract visitors for the whole of Easter holidays if that's when it is, or at least a couple of weekend before Easter.

Families see each other when they can, it doesn't matter if people do things at different times. Chocolate eggs are not the most religious symbol anyway 😂

Runningismyhappyplace50 · 01/11/2025 19:39

Does it matter! Ours goes up mid December and comes down on 27 December because as much as I love Christmas I want and need the space back.

I think this is what I hate. Retailers must think that people are only happy when planning or buying for the next holiday. Some people go for it but I don't look forward to anything that's more than a week away. I hold off putting my tree up as I don't need to see a Christmas tree to make me happy

I’m pretty sure that years ago shops were never trying to move people onto the next thing before the current one was even over. They have ruined things by doing this.

I did work for a supermarket. About 20th December on the delivery, in the totes for small things - OXO cubes, vanilla essence, packet sauces etc. I found the Crème Eggs and everyone groaned. We didn’t put them out before Christmas. Don’t think we got the larger eggs til early Feb

I think it’s because historically the Christmas period was more about the time from Christmas Eve/Day until the 12th night. Nowadays, it’s so commercialised that it’s all about Christmas Day, presents and the build up to it so that once Christmas Day is over and all the presents are opened then the festive season is also effectively over.

Potatoelephant · 01/11/2025 20:54

SquirrelandPanda · 01/11/2025 13:46

Mine comes down straight after Christmas because my dad died on New Years Day and I don’t like decorations up for each anniversary, I’m sure there are lots of reasons why people do it!

Same with me. My tree come down on 27th because my dad died on 28th. When it goes up varies but never earlier than first weekend in December

Hotpolishcloth · 01/11/2025 21:04

Christmas is over then in my eyes. Once Boxing Day is done, I’m done. By 6th Jan Christmas is a distant memory.

WeeGeeBored · 01/11/2025 22:03

ConnieHeart · 01/11/2025 14:54

And the only way to do it is to put up your Christmas tree

Of course not. But it’s one way. And for many getting out the tree and old ornaments and decorations is loaded with memories unique to that activity.
