I love Japanese - fresh, simplistic food done well. Big emphasis on whole foods and mostly on the healthier side. Doesn’t leave you with regret after eating!

On the flip side.. Indian is my nightmare! I hate cumin, fennel & coriander which rules most dishes out. I don’t mind the occasional korma but that’s as far as it gets - greasy curries etc aren’t really my cup of tea

LittleArithmetics · 30/10/2025 22:25

Chinese would be least favourite as I'm veggie and the available options tend to seem like afterthoughts or side dishes.

Hard to pick a favourite though! Indian, Japanese and Thai would all be up there.

Livpool · 30/10/2025 22:27

I love Indian and Italian

Hate Thai and Japanese

soupyspoon · 30/10/2025 22:28

I have never met a foodstuff or cuisine I dont like (although see below). I would say overall I am not overly keen on chinese food and thats because I dont like chinese 5 spice as a flavour. However I wouldnt say I actively dislike it, its just not my favourite

There are a few things I dont like, liver, kidneys, trout, beetroot, some blue cheeses, tripe

I cant actually think of anything else I dont like.

Its a problem!!!

TheThingsYouDoForLurve · 30/10/2025 22:30

Least favourite - fast food, so cheap burgers, pizza, kebabs, nuggets etc.

Love Japanese, Lebanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Thai, Indian, French, Greek, Caribbean, Ethiopian - all the foods!

Hate cheap Chinese takeaway food.

Here's a thought:

Cuisines that are a bit of a let down in the main course department seem to make it up with the desserts and sweets. Like Germany, Austria, Belgium.

Culinary traditions that get it right for the savouries tend to let themselves down when it comes to the pudding.

Is there anywhere that really zings in both?

Let down in the main course???

Waterzooi, ever had that? gorgeous, had it on a cold winters day in Bruges far out of town, it was rabbit but we made it with chicken when we got home
Austria, fantastic cheesy noodle type things, gorgeous
Any country which celebrates the cabbage and preserved meats also get my votes

Well most food gets my votes. I could talk about food all day long.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 30/10/2025 22:35

@CoffeeCantata

Thai.
This probably makes me unique. But that smell of lemongrass, ginger, garlic and coconut makes me retch

Nope, I'm exactly the same.

I'm not a fussy eater by any stretch of the imagination, and I don't mind garlic or ginger, but the taste of lemongrass immediately provokes a gag reaction from me so I avoid Thai completely.

Anything else I'm fine with. Love Mexican, Indian, Chinese, Italian, just anything with lemongrass is a total no. A friend brought back a holiday gift of lemongrass chocolates. Vile, had to bin them after one bite.

AffIt · 30/10/2025 22:37

Love East / South East Asian food and Levantine.

I was vegetarian for a long time and a lot of Middle Eastern food is veggie by default, so an easy choice.

I like Italian food, but I wouldn't choose it to eat out, because I'm a very good cook and can make most Italian dishes at home. The exception would be a restaurant serving fresh, hand-made pasta or similar (a faff I can't be bothered with).

Same!

Good username!

I think I subconsciously turned food into a hobby so I'd eat more of it. And dear god it worked. I love the history behind food too. All of it. Techniques, crop growing traditions, preparation methods. It makes me happy.

VegQueen · 30/10/2025 22:38

I love lots of food but my favourites are Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese, Italian and Indian (not curry house style Indian although that’s ok).

I like most things but not a fan of British Chinese takeaway. I do like more authentic Chinese dishes but haven’t had loads as don’t eat meat! Also wasn’t a fan of Persian when I had it but again not eating meat probably limits that so not a fair representation.

Oh god this is me. I read recipe books like novels. I watch every programme going. We go on holiday to places we dont know purely because we want to try new foods, restaurants. I put more effort into restaurant and food place choices than my actual job! Love the history of food, love the combinations and similarities with different nations cuisines, there is so much shared and so much different.

FrostAtMidnight · 30/10/2025 22:42

Favourite- Japanese
Lear favourite- probably the worst food I’ve ever eaten was backpacking in Mexico. I know Mexican food can be wonderful but this was mainly boiled meat with tubes and brown slop.

Garamousalata · 30/10/2025 22:47

I love Thai, Chinese and Indian. My least favourite is Italian. I’m not keen on pasta and pizza.

Dyra · 30/10/2025 22:51

So glad I'm not alone with the lemongrass hate! Utterly vile stuff.

I don't really have a disliked cuisine per se. More specific flavours (the afore mentioned lemongrass, as well as pine nuts, coffee and olives) that I would avoid, but there's usually enough variety within any particular cuisine itself I could avoid them. Also octopus, squid, mussels, oysters, and prawns. Blech. I guess the hardest hit would be Greek and Spanish as a result, but I do love a good gyro and paella.

As for favourite cuisines I love: Mexican, Japanese, English, Italian, and Indian. I would include Chinese, but I get the feeling takeaways don't really mirror true Chinese cuisine. If it counts, I would also include Texas BBQ. It's so very bad for you, but it tastes sooooo good.

There's probably a good reason I'm so fat.

My oldest daughter went to Cambridge (gotta do the humble brag wherever I can) but the very first thing i did when she was accepted was go on trip advisor to see what restaurants I could go to when I visited 🤣

And then COVID happened and she hated it and I didn't get to try anywhere.

She went to Canterbury and is now a Sen teacher and I've eaten loads there and I love it so all's well that ends well! I want to move there too!

There's a new restaurant called salt that's on my demand list for next months visit 🤣

I believe I've gone off a tangent, sorry.

CAMHShelp · 30/10/2025 22:52

Love Chinese, Greek, Moroccan
Hates chips, mash or any type of potato so most British food
No keen on Italian, mainly pizza but going out to pay for pasta seems daft

dizzydizzydizzy · 30/10/2025 22:52

Favourite= Lebanese because I love all the ingredients such as aubergine, yogurt and chick peas
Least Favourite- Chinese - I get bored of it vety quickly

OtherS · 30/10/2025 22:54

Also dislike Indian. The taste, but even more so the smell. I am aware I'm the oddball as everyone loves it, so was really excited to go to India where I assumed I'd taste proper Indian food and finally 'get it'. I had expensive food tours, and ate in apparently some of the very best restaurants. And unfortunately nope, still can't stand it. Can just about stomach a garlic naan and chicken korma if I have to, but that's pretty much it.

American is probably my least favourite though, I don't like beef, I don't like burgers, I don't like plastic cheese, I don't like my bacon burnt to a crisp, I don't want marshmallows in my roast dinner (?!), I don't like barbeque sauce etc etc. Can't really think of any American food that I like, though I admit I've not experimented much with the southern dishes like jambalaya. That would probably be more my taste.

Favourite is probably Italian, but also love middle eastern. I ate local food all over Egypt and that was one of my favourite holidays for eating, especially as it's a lot cheaper than Italy! Do also like Thai, although I've just gotten back from a month round there and it does get a little samey after a while. And of course England; a proper roast dinner, cheese, a well-cooked breakfast or fish and chips (neither of which should greasy if done right!) I think people dislike English food as they've only had badly cooked English food, and it's much more difficult to do well than some other cuisines. But when cooked properly - yum!

AsAliveAsYouNeedMeToBe · 30/10/2025 23:06

Favourite: Italian, Chinese and Eastern European (Hungarian, Polish, Baltic, etc). Also like Middle Eastern, Greek, Japanese and French.

Hate: obviously British (no need for any explanation) and Indian - hate everything about it. Have been to India, and the only edible thing there were plain fruit. Curries, dhals, etc just look like it already completed a cycle through digestive tract and came out the other end. Taste is also similar.

WhatAnExcellentDayForAnExorcism · 30/10/2025 23:11

Chinese food. I had a horrific bout of food poisoning the last time I had it and now I can’t even look at it. Which is a shame as I did like it.

Favourite is probably American. I love a really good burger.

narcASD · 31/10/2025 00:01

Least favourite is Italian, boring pizza / pasta
indian is probably my favourite closely followed by Greek and Thai. I love a kebab but a proper shish not doner.

not keen on Eastern European foods either

coxesorangepippin · 31/10/2025 01:18

Like any Asian food, also Indian. French is also nice.

I think dessert is a big factor though - British desserts and puddings are the best in the world.

Silverbirchleaf · 31/10/2025 04:09

Dislike Sushi. Raw fish. Urgh.

Don’t really have a favourite .

Thai.

This probably makes me unique. But that smell of lemongrass, ginger, garlic and coconut makes me retch.

And I hate watery soup/broths with large things afloat in them, especially fungi of any sort.

Feeling queasy now…

I also hate Thai. It always looks like it has been eaten once already.

Favourite food is Italian, but that's family tradition.

HelenaWaiting · 31/10/2025 04:16

And a big thumbs down to the people who think Italian cuisine is just pizza or pasta.

spoonbillstretford · 31/10/2025 04:28

Mediocre British or US. Especially if you are being ripped off at the same time. Both can be very good done well, of course.

Turkish food can be very nice but some touristy representations of it can also be quite bland.

I could live on various East Asian food for a very long time and never be bored. Also south Indian. Nom nom nom.

France and Italy I put half a stone on as soon as I cross the border. Foodie heaven.
