I love Japanese - fresh, simplistic food done well. Big emphasis on whole foods and mostly on the healthier side. Doesn’t leave you with regret after eating!

On the flip side.. Indian is my nightmare! I hate cumin, fennel & coriander which rules most dishes out. I don’t mind the occasional korma but that’s as far as it gets - greasy curries etc aren’t really my cup of tea

Does frozen beige food count? I really don’t like that.

I quite enjoy everything else, especially Japanese and Vietnamese food. So tasty.

I don’t think I can pick one as a favourite, I could never knock it down to one.

Least favourite I would say British food, not a great variety and generally flavour free.

In defence of British food I’d say there is some great stuff out there but you won’t find it in restaurants.

My family had some delicious favourites and if you go to a posh place like Simpson or Rules, you’ll find these but your average pub or most restaurants don’t bother.

There are some fab traditional British puddings but what’s on the men in most places? Chocolate things, cheesecake, brownie and ice cream, tiramisu etc. Nothing wrong with these - they’re lovely- but I’m making the point that traditional British cuisine is rarely served in restaurants.

AutumnalCrows · 30/10/2025 21:31

Yeah. It’s not the most inspiring OP. But she doesn’t mind the occasional korma, so there’s that.

Didn’t realise not being a fan of Indian was such a crime..!

What dish would you recommend then that doesn’t have cumin/fennel/coriander, not heavily spiced and isn’t greasy? From my experience (not just from British takeaways/restaurants) it leaves you with a very limited selection.

Here's a thought:

Cuisines that are a bit of a let down in the main course department seem to make it up with the desserts and sweets. Like Germany, Austria, Belgium.

Culinary traditions that get it right for the savouries tend to let themselves down when it comes to the pudding.

Is there anywhere that really zings in both?

You’re right! Few get both right.

RaraRachael · 30/10/2025 21:45

Favourite - Greek. I love the lamb and chicken with simple salads, bread and yoghurt

Least favourite - Mexican. I like spicy food but this is just a kind of spiciness that I don't enjoy

rainbowsparkle28 · 30/10/2025 21:46

Wheat, Barley, Rye, Oats and Spelt - plot twist, I’m coeliac 🤗🌾

Soukmyfalafel · 30/10/2025 21:48

Never really tried it, but Icelandic and Nordic foods do not look that appealing to me.

I've heard Dutch food is even worse than British and is really bland.

Italian is overrated.

Prefer middle eastern/greek/Turkish.

Buying MSG from a Chinese food store makes home cooked Chinese food taste much more better.

mamaduckbone · 30/10/2025 21:48

I pretty much love everything! Least favourite probably Chinese, favourites...I really can't choose. It depends what mood I'm in.

Molle · 30/10/2025 21:49

Indian.

StokePotteries · 30/10/2025 21:50

I love Lebanese and other Middle Eastern cuisines, love Japanese, Indian, good modern British and Mediterranean.

I'm nearly always disappointed by Mexican food but that's probably because I haven't been to a great restaurant. It all tastes the same to me. Went to a place in NYC which everyone else at the table raved about. It made the best cocktails I've ever had but the food was really bland in taste and texture.

VeryQuaintIrene · 30/10/2025 21:51

I've never met any Indian food I didn't enjoy, but I hate Japanese food - cold rice, raw fish, that nasty weird vinegary miso-y taste that it has. Maybe I've just been unlucky whenever I've been served it? Also US Chinese food is much nicer than British Chinese food.

mylittledoggie · 30/10/2025 21:52

Probably English! I do love a roast but everything is so boring!

Optik · 30/10/2025 21:52

Love mexican, greek, Indian.
Hate Japanese and Chinese. Can't stand sushi and don't think I've ever had a good Chinese, they always seem disappointing.

Ncforthistopiced · 30/10/2025 21:53

Am not a fan of Italian, too many carbs and generally quite heavy. Love Indian,Chinese and Greek .

Slinky987 · 30/10/2025 21:55

I've never met a cuisine I didn't like!

Moonlightfrog · 30/10/2025 21:56

Least favourite is probably Italian, mainly because I am lactose and gluten intolerant so unable to eat pasta, cheese, pizza and bread. I am sure someone will come along and name dishes that are gluten and lactose closely followed by Mexican .

Starters
Veg samosas with tamarind and mint sauce. Fried but they don't have to be greasy if they're fried well.
Dhokla - steamed sour and very mild gram flour cake with hardly any oil.
Main course
I do a really nice Bengali dry potato curry with mustard seeds.
Channa - chickpea, tomato and onion. The sauce isn't oily.
Chapati - done with almost no oil
Pudding
Pistachio kulfi - Indian ice cream with cardamom

Ponderingwindow · 30/10/2025 22:06

Favorite is Italian.

most hated is Indian. It made me sick for years and I never understood why. It finally got to the point I refused to go to lunch with coworkers at the local beloved by everyone else restaurant. Once my allergies got severe enough to be diagnosed I figured it out. It’s because so many of the dishes contain things I’m allergic to now. I was having mild reactions and just didn’t realize what was happening.

Starconundrum · 30/10/2025 22:09

I love nearly everything.

Which is a bit weird as I had that avoidance thing growing up due to neurodiverence. I would only eat fruit, veg and meat or fish that I could recognise as them and I only drank water or lemonade (you can see through it). I refused nuggets, chips and coke, abhored chocolate! I was desperately underweight til I got pregnant and had a dietician. And then I discovered fat goes really well with fresh produce. They started me with avocado and peanut butter.

I still like really fresh food, mexican (crema!), Japanese(mayo, ramen broth) middle eastern (hummus, tsatsiki!). But I also love a stew or hot pot. From anywhere. And I really really fell in love with hot dogs when I went to Germany, and America does stuff like that so well! And i like chips now as long as there's cheese on them, or they come with a really good dip. Italian is also a firm favourite. I love the freshness of thai.

I wouldn't eat tripe and I'm funny about shellfish, but they're not really cuisines. So I think I like everywhere that I've tried.

Now I'm hungry.

HRTQueen · 30/10/2025 22:12

Love Indian, Sri Lankan, Thai, Malaysian, Italian, Middle Eastern and Mexican. Recently went to a Peruvian restaurant the food was fantastic

not so keen on Chinese (or what we tend to get in restaurants, and I don’t mind Japanese but dislike sushi. I prefer stronger flavours in food,

love burger or steak and chips too

MoonBugs · 30/10/2025 22:12

I personally don’t like the Thai food I have had; I don’t like seafood, soy gives me an upset stomach and lemongrass/coriander/coconut milk combination are the only flavours/smells that seem to trigger a migraine.

I do love most Indian food that I’ve tried, I could probably live on Dahl and roti alone and be very happy.

ninjahamster · 30/10/2025 22:13

I’ve never really had Thai or Japanese, just doesn’t appeal to me.

I do love Indian. Also lived in Italy as a child so have a nostalgia for Italian food.

Spudlover · 30/10/2025 22:16

Slinky987 · 30/10/2025 21:55

I've never met a cuisine I didn't like!

Same!

My least favourite though is probably Italian, I view pizza and pasta as a “can’t be arsed” kind of meal, although obviously I’m not making it properly. It just doesn’t feel like a treat.

reversingdumptruckwithnotyreson · 30/10/2025 22:17

Favourite probably would be Iberian as a whole/Mediterranean. You just never get tired of it and it relies mostly on good products to begin with.

The further north we go, the less I like it. Nordic food just seems… eh.

I think we can find goods bits on every cuisine though. Even British food I think it has an undeserved bad rep now that I’ve been here for a while - I don’t think traditional food is the problem, modern day consumption is (takeaways, ready meals and so on).

TheOpalReader · 30/10/2025 22:21

My favourite is probably English food. Done well I absolutely love it.

I like all other cuisines equally, with the exception of Thai and middle eastern. I despise lemongrass and I'm not keen on sumac/za'atar.
