Can you break wind around others or do you hold it in!?

Oddly, I cannot seem to relax enough to fart when around others but when I leave work I get in my car and suddenly there is loads of trapped air coming out with ease. Is this normal? I'm not purposely holding it in when around others, I genuinely don't feel the need but then when alone I can trump away.

There is some kind of science behind why we don’t mind the smell of our own, but find others nasty.

And me, no - I fart alone, or in the bathroom. Never intentionally or knowingly around anyone else, I think it’s bad manners!

Splendidbouquet · 29/10/2025 18:35

It shows you have manners OP.

There was a thread a wee while ago where the OP wanted to know how far into a relationship she could fart in front of her partner. I found it gross that someone actually saw farting infront of someone a sign of intimacy and affection.

I think you have misunderstood: no one sees farting as a sign of “intimacy and affection”… its just that you can’t live with people and rush off to another room to break wind all the time: it’s unhealthy, impractical and means you’re constantly hiding from your family!

I find it more puzzling that people are ready to make efforts, if it even take an effort, on a first date or all day every day at work, but can't offer the same decency to their own family members.

I don't want to be part of the furniture, if it would be a turn off on a first date, it's still a turn off today, simple.

Why would you need to rush off ‘all the time’? If you need to do it and can’t do it discreetly for some reason then apologise and open a window.

most people don’t actually need to fart that often. If you can hold it in so as not to offend people you don’t know that well surely you know really that you shouldn’t do it in front if the ones you actually love.

also I cannot imagine wanting to have sex with my husband if he made a habit of farting round me. He is good looking, in good shape, always smells amazing and it’s the sexiest thing ever.

EXACTLY - you’d hate to upset a stranger but ok with being offensive round your actual family…

Well the thread i was talking about the OP definitely saw breaking wind as a sign of intimacy. She was looking forward to the time when she would know him well enough to be be comfortable farting in front of him.

But your comment makes it look as though you and your family spend the whole of your time together farting.
Personally I may occasionally eat or drink something that makes me pass wind but it's a pretty rare occurance. I certainly don't spend time going out of the room to do it on anything other than a very rare occasion.

AllFadestoBlack · 29/10/2025 21:15

I have a colostomy so sadly have no control over when it happens. Previously though I would hold it in. Now I try to muffle it on the odd occasion I feel one before it breaks free!

buffyreboot · 29/10/2025 21:16

I don’t in front of anyone

Alpacajigsaw · 29/10/2025 21:17

I fart like a bastard in front of my husband and kids, or on my own, but hold it in otherwise

I just don’t see why I should have to hide a perfectly natural bodily function from my family? I don’t pretend not to go to the toilet.

I don’t go out of my way to fart in front of my family; I don’t do it for comedy reasons or gratuitously and I would never do it around food or in a very enclosed space but by the same token I don’t feel the need to pretend that I don’t break wind. Neither does my DP or my daughter, we’re not “offended” by it. Why should we?

HeavenInMyHeart · 29/10/2025 21:21

Amongst family we all fart freely. We’re a farty family and let’s be real, they’re funny.

Amongst friends, it depends. With my closest friends yes but not anyone else. At work, absolutely not.

What’s offensive about a normal bodily function?

Endofyear · 29/10/2025 21:22

I only fart around family and close friends if I have to, never at work or in public! Mostly I'd wait until I'm alone to let rip!!

It’s not pleasant but I wouldn’t describe it as offensive. I don’t take offence if someone farts in front of me. 9 times out of 10 I’ll laugh

HedwigEliza · 29/10/2025 21:25

Never in front of anyone - absolutely disgusting thing to do in front of someone, no matter who it is.

You haven’t smelt my teen son’s fart

Nolift · 29/10/2025 21:25

9/10x you laugh at farts?

They’re funny, and I think anyone who says they’re not is lying.

PracticalPixie · 29/10/2025 21:29

I hold it in. I'm not a fan of people farting in front of me either if possible. But I don't mind if they're little kids...or very elderly maybe.

My mum had diverticulitis though, so I do worry I hold it in too much! I have my own office at work but people do come in throughout the day, so even there I'm not safe 🙈. This is why I do a lunchtime walk, with the aforementioned by a pp, sneaky look over my shoulder to check the coast is clear before farting!

Anyone who thinks along those kind of lines is going to find farts funny!

I use the toilet in private 😂

Of course I hide "natural bodily function" from my family, I wouldn't change my tampax in front of my kids or husband either! Poor kids.

Some posters are weird.

UsernameMcUsername · 29/10/2025 21:01

Don't hold it in any mmmmmmore.......

We fart gratuitously at home (I live with teen / preteen boys, so farts are regularly commented on and rated out of ten) but surely everyone holds it in when at work or whatever?

You clearly don’t have IBS. I mean, I don’t do audibly at work but I can’t always hold them in or gets uncomfortable and the backlash is worse!

FullOfMomsense · 29/10/2025 21:33

I've held in wind for so many years that I think I've lost the ability to break it! I cannot stand people who fart in front of their partners intentionally. I think it's fine if it's an accidental one but not intentional and while pulling faces!

My best friend has a digestive system condition so she has to, and of course it doesn't bother me in the slightest. But anyone letting loose intentionally in public is vile!
