Is this a normal childhood prank or is this kid unhinged?

A few weeks ago DH, 2 dc age 7 & 8 & I were round at a friend’s for lunch. Our kids were playing down the hall with their kids, a 9 yo boy and a 7 yo girl, while the adults were in the lounge. My friend, their mum, went to check on them at one point and I heard a gasp and then my friend screaming “why would you do something so horrible, you little shits!” I’ve never, ever heard her talk like this to the kids before and she sounded panicked so we all went running and the 4 of them had put ketchup all over themselves and were lying on the floor posed like they’d been murdered! By the time myself and dh & friend’s partner got there they were all sitting up talking but I will admit it looked like blood and if I was my friend I probably would’ve fallen for it too. It transpired it was the 7 yo daughter of my friend’s idea of a prank and she convinced the rest of them to join in. No idea where she got such a morbid and IMO extremely cruel idea for a prank from at such a young age. She’s always seemed like a very normal 7-year-old. The fact she did this to her own parents and talked my DDs into doing it too has creeped me out a bit though and I’m worried about the influence she might be having on my DDs. Am I overreacting and is this a fairly normal childhood prank in bad taste? Or should I be worried she’s a psychopath in the making?!

😂 I played the same prank as a child myself, so I couldn’t get worked up about it.

ETA - I didn’t turn into a psychopath!

yeesh · 28/10/2025 21:55

It is nearly Halloween 🎃

Eenameenadeeka · 28/10/2025 21:55

I wouldn't appreciate the prank, but I also don't think that the child is unhinged.

gamerchick · 28/10/2025 21:56

They see this stuff online and copy it.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 28/10/2025 21:56

I'd have just laughed if my DC had done this. Honestly, I feel a little disappointed in them that they never thought of this.

Superfrog3 · 28/10/2025 21:57

Does she watch YouTube/ tik tok?? Im assuming she has seen it somewhere with it being halloween 🎃

I wouldn't be too concerned, its a little well executed for a 7 year old but I wouldn't say psychopath. I would maybe start worrying when small animals start disappearing 🤔

Doughtie · 28/10/2025 21:57

Having seen some of the stories Y2s write, and the pictures they draw, I don't think this is anything to worry about.

That's exactly what a psychopath would say 🫣

TheatricalLife · 28/10/2025 21:58

I did laugh, sorry 🤣
Seems pretty on par with what we would have done in the 80s as kids.

Notmyreality · 28/10/2025 21:59

I’m sure when your friend reads this she’ll appreciate you calling her daughter “unhinged” and a “psychopath”.
If anyone’s a bit nuts it’s you for thinking this about a 7 yo.

😂😂😂

RosesAndHellebores · 28/10/2025 22:01

As long as they didn't get it on any carpets, I think I'd have laughed.

BeetyAxe · 28/10/2025 22:01

Jeepers I used to position myself at the bottom of the stairs with ketchup coming out of my head. I thought it was hilarious 😂not a crazy lady I think anyway!

Terrytheweasel · 28/10/2025 22:01

It’s no surprise really with all the blood splattered windows and doors, advertising Halloween on TV, people with knives and Jason masks on. It’s even in Asda for gods sake - children are bound to pick it up, sadly.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 28/10/2025 22:02

I'd be furious in the moment but not concerned. I'd be more troubled that we have a festival that revolves around blood and gore that's aimed at children. I don't know why anyone is wondering where they saw this, only look around you and images like this are everywhere in public for a whole month.

AmyDuPlantier · 28/10/2025 22:03

We used to pretend to spontaneously collapse and die when people walked past our garden. Nobody ever stopped and tried to save our lives 🤣

Chattycatty32 · 28/10/2025 22:04

It may be morbid to an adult but a 7 year old doesn't think that deep yet.

LeafyMcLeafFace · 28/10/2025 22:05

Yeah I did this. I clearly wasn’t as talented as these kids, I think I just stunk of vinegar

OvenChick · 28/10/2025 22:06

Are you a very sensitive soul @Pointedpotter ? Because I would think it was (mildly) funny and...that's about it really.

Fussyeater321 · 28/10/2025 22:09

I remember pranking a family member by pretending I had died in the pool. Laying there lifeless holding my breath. Tbh I was just bored and more just seeing if I could pull it off than actually wanting to scare the adults.

CinnamonBuns67 · 28/10/2025 22:11

I'd hardly call someone with a darker sense of humour unhinged. I laugh at quite a few horror films and I wouldn't say I'm unhinged. You didn't find it funny, fair enough it's not for everyone but that doesn't make her a psychopath in the making. I think she sounds like a great kid with a cracking personality.

TessSaysYes · 28/10/2025 22:13

I think you're over reacting. I d give them credit for imagination and their vicious sense of humour which had all the adults panicking!
They probably picked up the idea on social media, or from friends. A memorable funny prank on the adults which you all will laugh about in years to come. 👏

Cece92 · 28/10/2025 22:17

I’m not going to lie this did make me laugh 😂 it is nearly Halloween so maybe just a harmless prank. I mean did you not get ketchup and pretend you’d hurt yourself as a kid?
