Is this a normal childhood prank or is this kid unhinged?

A few weeks ago DH, 2 dc age 7 & 8 & I were round at a friend’s for lunch. Our kids were playing down the hall with their kids, a 9 yo boy and a 7 yo girl, while the adults were in the lounge. My friend, their mum, went to check on them at one point and I heard a gasp and then my friend screaming “why would you do something so horrible, you little shits!” I’ve never, ever heard her talk like this to the kids before and she sounded panicked so we all went running and the 4 of them had put ketchup all over themselves and were lying on the floor posed like they’d been murdered! By the time myself and dh & friend’s partner got there they were all sitting up talking but I will admit it looked like blood and if I was my friend I probably would’ve fallen for it too. It transpired it was the 7 yo daughter of my friend’s idea of a prank and she convinced the rest of them to join in. No idea where she got such a morbid and IMO extremely cruel idea for a prank from at such a young age. She’s always seemed like a very normal 7-year-old. The fact she did this to her own parents and talked my DDs into doing it too has creeped me out a bit though and I’m worried about the influence she might be having on my DDs. Am I overreacting and is this a fairly normal childhood prank in bad taste? Or should I be worried she’s a psychopath in the making?!

Playing with fake blood at Halloween was the highlight of my year as a child. I think you are massively over reacting

Whatsmyusername94 · 30/10/2025 04:51

Stop being dramatic

It's normal, and if my kids had played that trick on me I'd have had a good laugh at myself.

Sally2791 · 30/10/2025 05:48

My kids would have done this and I would have laughed!

Friendlyfart · 30/10/2025 06:00

I’d be more concerned about the mess! Children egg each other on and get silly with friends.

Used to love the joke shop, fake blood, fake poo, the nail through the finger and the fake chewing gum with the finger trap

So true. I haven’t thought of that for years

Bladderpool · 30/10/2025 06:07

Oh look, a plop, run and never return thread! With a Halloween theme too! Golly gosh!

SleepyLemur · 30/10/2025 06:09

I think it's normal. Many children wouldn't have the empathy at that age to realise how much it would freak out parents (not because they are psychopaths or anything of course but due to their age). Children play games all the time and it sounds like this went too far. She may have seen something on TV or similar (not ideal but easily done). Tbh I think the strangest part of it all was your friend swearing at the kids, although she was obviously very understandably freaked out, so I would let it go of course.

Thanks for the warning that I have this or similar to come!

FrauPaige · 30/10/2025 06:12

You little shits!!

🤣🤣😁😃

We used to pretend to spontaneously collapse and die when people walked past our garden. Nobody ever stopped and tried to save our lives 🤣

This really made me laugh! Thank you

I would be more pissed off with the waste of tomato ketchup tbh 🤣

Rubyupbeat · 30/10/2025 06:37

Totally normal, especially this time of tear with all the costumes and fake blood everywhere.

pictoosh · 30/10/2025 06:37

Childhood prank.
Kids are often gruesome.
And it's...ketchup.

Think you'll all survive. 😉

Laserwho · 30/10/2025 07:05

I grew up in the 70s and 80s, we did things like this all the time. We all grew up fine. It's called using your imagination. This was long before tik tok etc so people blaming that should really stop, it's not because of that.

Iceandfire92 · 30/10/2025 07:06

Wow, I think your friend has a future Patrick Bateman on her hands! She needs to immediately secure her cutlery draw, hide the nail scissors, get rid of any matches in the house and rehome any pets that may suffer in her clutches. The signs are all there, I truly believe this will be the beginnings of a true crime documentary detailing the formative years of a serial killer. She may even move onto BBQ sauce next!

CocoRats · 30/10/2025 07:09

She’s going to be in the movies.

marigoldsareblooming · 30/10/2025 07:09

Did they just watch Robert Irwin on DWTS US? He appeared covered in blood for no apparent reason ( Go Robert).

Randomlygeneratedname · 30/10/2025 07:12

We used to put pillow cases over our head in the back of the car and pretend we were kidnapped 😆 no one ever tried to help

mumoftwo99x · 30/10/2025 07:13

I’d think it was very normal kids behaviour tbh - they’re just being kids and having fun. My son has done similar with ketchup being ‘blood’ (although not pretended to actually be dead, but only because he was laughing too much to even attempt to lay still.

Bluffinwithmymuffin · 30/10/2025 07:23

This really made me laugh. I can understand the initial shock for the friend who found them, but it’s just imaginative kids having a good laugh, nothing sinister. (I’d have been a bit annoyed afterwards about the clothes smothered in ketchup.)

cariadlet · 30/10/2025 07:29

Very normal joke that most children would find funny. I just hope they didn't get tomato ketchup on any carpet because that would be horrendous to try and get out.

The mum's language (calling the children "little shits") would be unacceptable as a normal way to speak to children but understandable in a moment of panic.

What isn't understandable, and is the only weird thing about the situation, is the op brooding about it and reading so much into it.

Doobedobe · 30/10/2025 07:33

I did this prank as a child.
It's quite normal.
I am a normal adult, quite boring now actually

RiseOfTheTeenyTinies · 30/10/2025 07:35

All I can think of is the smell! It must have stunk!

AnonSugar · 30/10/2025 07:37

Good prank 🤣
