Was listening to some music today and after my playlist was finished Spotify went off on its own little algorithm-y journey, and I suddenly found myself listening to a song so beautiful I had it on repeat for about an hour. That sort of thing happens to me very rarely, so I thought I’d see if anyone else could recommend songs that have struck them in a similar way.

Also! (Sorry, I'm going to end up spamming this thread, but music is a huge part of my life and I feel emotionally connected to many songs)

In The Water by Brand New. 137 by Brand New. Could Never Be Heaven by Brand New. Basically every single off of their album Science Fiction

Oh and
Marianne
by Sisters of Mercy.

Heard at about 1000 decibels in an underground market in Chelsea. I asked a stall holder what/who it was and went and bought the album.

Fabulous song. So dark and haunting.

Christine and the Queens ‘The Walker’ (and the video is breathtaking too).

VNV Nation ‘Endless Skies’ - it reminded me that I’m just the minutest fraction of a blink in the eye of the universe.

The Mountain Goats ‘1 John 4:16’ - one night, I’d left Radio 4 playing very quietly as I fell asleep and when this song started I woke up. I think my subconscious mind roused me because it was important that I heard this music.

DarkEyedSailor · 28/10/2025 22:06

Recently:

Stop Your Tears, Aldous Harding

Nothing's Gonna Hurt You Baby, Cigarettes After Sex.

SummaLuvin · 28/10/2025 22:07

emails I can't send - Sabrina Carpenter

she is seen as just a sexy pop princess, but I don't think a lot of people realise how deep some of her songs cut lyrically

Miserable1 · 28/10/2025 20:40

For me it's Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah.
Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares to You- because my dad loved it and would listen to it after separating from my mum - he'd say it reminded him of her (we were kids at the time). He passed away a few years ago and it makes me incredibly sad.

Also I went to see the Rock Orchestra recently (they do covers) and their version of Metallica Nothing Else Matters was amazing! Although I didn't actually know the original 🙈

Edited

Came to say Nothing Else Matters - Metallica 🩷

Just loving this thread, simply reading the song titles makes me hear them in my head and brings back memories. Music is so powerful, the emotions, the way it can transport us back to a particular moment in time and lets us recall who we were at the time, who we were with and what we were feeling. The talent of people who can write, sing and play and use that talent to enter the hearts and souls of other people with their words and tunes is like a sort of magic. I was watching that film about the young Dylan, A Complete Unknown and realised he wrote some of his most incredible songs when he was in his mid 20's.

ElectronicRenaissance · 28/10/2025 22:16

Quite a few, but most recently Total Control by The Motels. Heard it on the TV series "The Newsreader" and listened to it on repeat for hours.

Nick cave - into my arms

HerbertPootle · 28/10/2025 22:17

Morning by Beck. It came up on a suggested slideshow on iPhone photos of my ds’s when they were little. Had some videos in it too with their little voices chatting. It made me cry! Had to find the song and listened to it so many times.

Also, the ‘Can’t Fight This Feeling’ version by Bastille is lovely.

A pp mentioned ‘One Day Like This’ by Elbow. At my kids summer concert the sixth form band played this, they’re an amazing band and they had some of the kids from the orchestra playing the strings. Was the final song of the evening in the courtyard just as the sun was setting, I was almost crying listening to them. Have added it to my playlist now!
