I’m alone this evening. No children no partner.

Im sitting on the sofa overwhelmed by what I could do (read, I don’t want to watch a show, draw…) that I’ve frozen and I’m doing absolutely nothing!

What does one do when they have a whole evening to themselves?

Why is it we dream of having a moment alone without the family and when we get the chance it feels like a paralysis.

I so rarely have any time at home by myself, but on the very rare occasion that I do I tend to cook something I like for supper, have a few little treats (maybe a few chocolates or something), and then I get into my pjs early and either binge watch something like Friday Night Dinners, Miranda, Motherland etc OR I log onto the games console and play a few games of something. I’m rubbish as literally only play it maybe twice a year, but it’s fun for an hour or so. That’s for an evening alone obvs. I never have time alone during the day ever as we both work from home or the kids are around - if I did though I would likely do some organising / tidying and also go for a nice walk, just me and the dog,

TheTruthWillSetYouFreeMaybe · 27/10/2025 18:44

Not gonna lie - I have great plans for my evenings alone but in the end I just see to veg on the sofa and watch judge Judy !

knor · 27/10/2025 19:06

Dream alone evening - speed tidy up (lame but I like it to look nice while I relax) have an everything shower and put on fresh, clean pjs. cook my favourite meal with a glass of wine or order a takeaway. Light a candle. Read my kindle downstairs in the armchair, put quiet rain sounds in the background. Blissss. Tbh, sometimes stop reading my kindle and just breathe and decompress 😂

SandyDunesCoffeeShack · 27/10/2025 19:10

Plonked on the sofa, eating something, reading something, watching youtube videos about what interests me

SilverVixen101 · 27/10/2025 19:59

Re-watch whatever show I am currently obsessing over (Peacemaker). Eat pot noodle. Watch a horror film and maybe light internet stalking of my enemies. Cuddle cat.

Err...I tend to take the opportunity to masterbate. Sorry.

Thegrassroots26 · 27/10/2025 20:07

Ha! Tell me about it. Divorced and single coparent. When the kids are gone it’s horrible! Too quiet. Very easy to get the existential dread feeling. Time alone sounds like a great thing, but isn’t in reality so fun.

I love it when everyone's gone. Peace at last! On my own! I'd say that having family around can be a great thing, but time alone is mostly wonderful. Obviously, everybody is different.

cramptramp · 27/10/2025 20:25

Exactly the same as I do when I’m not alone.

I think it also depends how much alone time we are talking. I have a lot! It’s not that fun.

MousseMousse · 27/10/2025 20:33

Walk around naked

...not that I'm a naturist by any stretch but its nice to be able to pop down to the kitchen post shower without having to bother throwing something on

Usually I end up cooking or baking because I can do without being interrupted

InSpainTheRain · 27/10/2025 20:40

Monday night is quiz night on BBC2 so I usually watched Mastermind, Connect and University Challenge. Other nights I have a Spanish class, I'll do Spanish homework/practise, read (currently reading "How to break up with fast fashion). Sometimes I tidy up/clean, have a bath, always end the day by making a to do list for the next day!

TheChosenTwo · 27/10/2025 20:59

Haha @InSpainTheRain those programmes give me the rage, I can’t watch them at all - because they make me feel incredibly thick 😂😂

I sometimes find myself home alone for a whole evening. If I’m not booked in for a Pilates class or a swim I might phone a friend to see if they want to meet for a walk. Or I may take myself to the spa for a couple of hours. Other times I will lay on the sofa watching shit telly and paint my nails.

Time to myself at home all alone is a luxury and I absolutely switch off and enjoy the peace. I feel it’s productive because there’s little time usually to just please myself and no one else so it fulfills my need for me time.

How long does that take in reality though? I’ve never managed to spend a whole evening masturbating! It still leaves plenty of time to do some reading/watch something on TV.
Also why are you sorry?

MsSmartShoes · 27/10/2025 21:01

I’d love an evening home alone. Not having to worry about dinner for everyone, watching what I wanted. An evening of not having to compromise would be heaven.

I have loads but it's never too much. Admittedly, I can go out and meet people or chat on the phone if I feel the need. Maybe I'd feel differently if I didn't have that option.

NancyJoan · 27/10/2025 21:03

Have a bath, drink some wine, eat some cheese. Maybe watch a film I’ve already seen and know I love. Or otherwise phone a friend. Then lock up the house and go to bed, knowing no one will wake me by crashing around at stupid o’clock.

Ebeneser · 27/10/2025 21:24

Practice piano, read a book, go on my peloton or treadmill. Watch a film, game, learn music theory. I have endless things I can do. Absolutely love it when I'm home alone.

JaceLancs · 27/10/2025 21:51

I’m frequently on my own apart from Dcat
I tend not to cook a proper meal - knit, do a jigsaw, surf the internet, watch rubbish on you tube, sometimes read a book or have a long soak in the bath
I rarely watch tv but might look for an old film

Mondaytuesdayhappydays · 26/10/2025 21:36

A shower and a lady wank, Telly, wine, (no cooking from scratch bollox) beans on toast with half a block of grated cheese and lashings m of butter. followed by both portions of a two pack of an MnS pudding with clotted cream

Bit of Mumsnet and a crossword. Bit of WhatsApp on various chats with friends or family.

All of above can only be done if house tidy, don’t need to do a food shop and if I’m up to date at work.

bliss
loads of it now the kids grown up and DH working away loads

🤣

JulianClarysDog · 27/10/2025 22:05

I don’t make a proper dinner, just have cereal and a banana
Have nice bath
Curl up in front on the telly and fire and watch something gentle/ girly that my husband would not be interested in.
Bed early and read my book x

SweetPeasandGerberas · 27/10/2025 22:16

Just relax. You don't need to 'do' anything. Your time to do nothing, or something, as you see fit

Oh, trust me, I could make it last a whole evening with the right motivation

Jack80 · 28/10/2025 06:56

I have a bath and read, I watch a film or tv shows. Clean the house then chill, invite a friend around. Listen to music/podcast, exercise or play a game. I would love to get a sewing machine and make clothes, maybe learn a hobby.

Can I ask why the posters on this thread ant do all these things with others in the house?

It’s a genuine question.

I live with a DP & DCs. (Not very little anymore)

But I can do this stuff if I want to. Maybe not dancing around the living room but all the other stuff. I decide what I eat/when I go to bed/what I watch on screens every night anyway.

Is my life really that peculiar?

Lol I did wonder also. I also wondered when people have a kid free night that they choose to stay indoors rather than go out
