I went this week and was looking around at the likely demographic

OP posts:

It's delicious, fresh, hot, lots of choice to suit everyone - healthy if you choose lean meat and lots of vegetables and good value too. I love it.
(Although I am a bit bemused by macaroni cheese masquerading as a vegetable!)

RosesAndHellebores · 26/10/2025 19:40

As I've said to DH many times, if four of us were to go, the Toby is £9 per head. £36. Drinks probably another £20. For the two who want puds £8. So £64, minimum.

I can do a leg of lamb with all the trimmings, a nice pudding and a decent bottle of wine for less. A free range chicken or loin of pork for much less; a rib or two of beef or piece of sirloin bought on special offer for a shade more. A roast is no trouble.

This is such a weird thread.

Lol. I mean OPs not wrong I guess but it’s a bit like saying I shop at Harrods food court and just noticed all the customers are middle class 😅.

Like no shit Sherlock. Not a dig at you OP btw but just made me smile. We can see this class division replicated at many different establishments. It’s not a new phenomena but I guess it might seem a bit strange to observe if you were initially oblivious to it.

Suusue · 26/10/2025 19:41

I loathe it. Been twice. Would never go again.

Mondaytuesdayhappydays · 26/10/2025 19:41

Ha!
My middle class friends drone me potty with their regular eating out with vouchers, discount codes, no starter no pudding, 2 PE pizzas between 3 huge teens, no sides, tap water bollocks.

My working class friends- myself included although got a few quid now, are more all out balls out when eating out and bloody love a carvery!

We also usually gets puds, buy booze and tip well having most of us worked in restaurants esp where now it’s middle aged adults running around after you in hospitality not just Saturday staff, school
leavers and university students in their breaks.

We just had a salmon affair tea (yawn)
god I could do a Toby now….

Catsknowbest · 26/10/2025 19:42

Point of thread........??

Hallywally · 26/10/2025 19:43

@Crushed23”Inverted snobbery” is a contradiction in terms. “isms” are about ingrained structural power- racism, sexism, classism etc. A maligned group who lacks the societal power of a other- money/power- might express personal discontent towards that particular group but it can’t be aligned with those the views of those who hold the power. In short- the povs or w/c not liking a “high end” restaurant is not on a par with those who are wealthier/middle class and upwards looking down their noses on their social inferiors.

The one in the next town to me is Chav central.

Just the op who described the gaff as working class.

We went once. The chap ahead of us decided to try the gravies, all of them, by dipping in his finger and licking it. Frankly he had no class but put us off for life.

We had dry dinner and the tables were a bit a sticky. DH nearly had a melt down: queued, fingers in the gravy, sticky tables, rubbosh wine and beer.

@CremeBruhlee on nights like that, I buy steaks, a ready made salad bowl, pot of bearnaise sauce and shove in some oven chips or new potatoes. Cheaper and better.

Oh gosh. Wasn't my experience when I went. But I definitely would have called out that behaviour. I just remember loading my plate with potatoes and gravy and vegetables.

Tomorrowtodaywhenever · 26/10/2025 19:49

Well yes, it is. But it's still good value for a family meal. We used to go quite a bit when the kids were smaller as it was easy, you don't have to dress up, they can eat or not eat what they want as it is a buffet and noone seems worried about perfect table manners/kids dropping a potato or gravy spills on the table
We have gone off it now though, I think one day we just stopped going.

Vitriolinsanity · 26/10/2025 19:50

It has no class. But it’s very good.

ohyesido · 26/10/2025 19:51

Can’t get a table at my local one because it’s constantly rammed, this is despite terrible reviews

Hedjwitch · 26/10/2025 19:52

Its bloody delicious.

ExitPursuedByABare · 26/10/2025 19:52

I’d rather eat my own feet.

Chav is an offensive term

Miserable1 · 26/10/2025 19:57

Funnily enough I'm going to Toby Carvery tomorrow. It's one of the few places halfway between my friend and I and I get 20% NHS discount. I really like it! The first time I went there I was shocked at how cheap it was. It is what it is, it's not quite the same standard as a fancy country pub (although some are questionable) but it's nice food at a reasonable price.
I will say that we always go to the same one near a services and it seems nice in there and always quite. I once visited one in my nearest town and it was horrendous. Busy, rude staff and a very different type of customer.

BitOutOfPractice · 26/10/2025 18:49

I’m middle class. I love a gravy dinner at Toby. Where does that put me in your social hierarchy.

You’re probably not middle class! They will say !

BettyBobble · 26/10/2025 20:01

Hallywally · 26/10/2025 19:35

@BettyBobble If you’re gonna to label people at least do it correctly- it’s “echelon”. 🙄

It was a typo and obviously toungue in cheek. The OP is being ridiculous

Jk987 · 26/10/2025 20:01

Classes only exist in your mind. Love how people think they’re differentiating themselves by saying they’re middle class. Deluded!

I'd rather be comfortable and WC than an uptiight gobshite. We're so going for a Toby at weekend

Arraminta · 26/10/2025 20:08

I would only eat there in extremis, the quality of the food is generally poor especially the meat. But I don't suppose the majority of people eating there realise and probably see it as a nice thing to do.

Bambamhoohoo · 26/10/2025 19:55

Lol do you think I actually care. It's an apt description of the people that frequent the Toby I speak of

Uppitywoman · 26/10/2025 20:10

And…?

JoanneTeresa · 26/10/2025 18:48

I eat there and use a voucher, so get it even cheaper😛
