This Christmas?
I know it’s mainly a cost thing but if it’s achievable, can people possibly manage with less stuff?

Define unnecessary?

Are socks unnecessary?
Period pants?
cutlery?
screwdrivers?
tape measures?
wellington boots?
pyjamas?
sunglasses?
reading glasses?

Well manicure kits for one.

Advent calendars and stocking fillers for adult children for another.

ninjahamster · 25/10/2025 19:02

Like I said, it makes me uncomfortable. But I do want people to have gifts at Christmas.
Many other companies also have connections to child labour. Nestle, new look, h and m, Apple…

I’d be really upset if a hard up relative felt they had to get me anything, and it would be massively compounded if they’d spent money they couldn’t afford buying me planet-destroying child labour produced shite from Temu and Shein.

But tell us how you have managed to stop buying everything that is linked to Chinese supply chains. It is a major achievement which we’d like to know about. So go on, how have you done it?

I didn't say I had. I said I make every effort to avoid it.

There is no excuse for knowingly buying something from a platform like Temu which you know is rife with slave produced goods just because it's cheap.

How about you answer my question: where else do you think slavery is acceptable?

utamea · 25/10/2025 22:33

ninjahamster · 25/10/2025 21:18

Not things I personally need, no. Presents for my family.,

But your kids are grown up? So they can understand they don’t need presents?

Also, in your earlier post you refer to “beauty bits” that your don’t buy from Shein/Temu. These aren’t necessary items. Why buy them? The beauty industry is a con anyway.

Oh I don’t wear make up.
But my daughters do. And beauty bits I also mean to cover toiletries like deodorant, shampoo, shower gel.

Ok so you buy goods all day long linked to Chinese supply chains and slavery. But like to virtue signal about two brands in particular.

Got it.

Hoensyly, so predictable from the ultra woke crowd. None of their ‘morals’ ever stand up to scrutiny.

Which goods do I buy "all day long" from chains linked to slave labour, please? I buy very little day to day or even week to week (not counting food). And when I do, it is mainly second hand.

Again you haven't answered my question: where else do you think slavery is acceptable?

ChickpeasOnEarth · 25/10/2025 22:39

ninjahamster · 25/10/2025 22:22

But why would a top from Shein be more likely to end up in landfill than a top from Next?
Or a manicure kit from Temu be more likely to end up in landfill than one from Boots?

Because cheaper shite from Shein and Temu probably won't last as long.
Or the people who buy it are more likely to throw it away and just buy another manicure kit the next Christmas, knowing they can get another cheap one as a present.
I honestly don't understand how people can care so little about the planet and the slavery that we are paying for.

But you just said that you don’t have any way of avoiding of goods linked to Chinese supply chains? So how exactly are you not buying good made by slave labour?

If you can swerve posting ridiculously patronising threads, then maybe we can talk.

Where did I say "I don't have any way of avoiding good linked to Chinese supply chains", please?

I said I make every effort to avoid it. In most cases I can easily avoid it by buying second hand.

Once again, I will ask: where else do you think slavery is acceptable?

So how are you avoiding it then? If you are not avoiding it and buying goods made by slave labour, why are you lecturing others.

Your argument makes no sense and you are clearly not practicing what you preach. In common parlance, that’s known as hypocrisy

Happy to swerve and don’t need to make xenophobic comments about the Chinese only making shit to do it (not you op but others here, China exports a lot of very high quality and essential stuff we all take for granted)

Well said! This nonsense about how if it's made in China it must be shit really annoys me. Where I live practically everything is made in China, both cheap tat and expensive stuff. I have a Johnson Brothers dinner set - the earlier stuff was made in England, the latter stuff in China. It's all the same.

ninjahamster · 25/10/2025 22:46

My Shein clothes are lasting really well, they wash well, don’t shrink.
I wouldn’t buy a manicure kit for my child this year then another next year as they would already have one!
I resent the suggestion that because I have to buy cheaper, I would chuck things in landfill. If anything, I imagine far less goes to landfill from my house than most.

We have a lot less clothes than most people I imagine. Less shoes. One coat each. We rarely redecorate so curtains etc last years. Ditto bedding.
No food waste. Grey bin emptied every three weeks, rarely close to full.

As I said in my posts, a few times, I mainly avoid it by buying second hand.

My posts are relatively short and I have had to repeat myself several times. I am not sure what you're failing to comprehend.

I practice what I preach by a) not buying from Temu or Shein and b) buying as ethically as I can (i.e. buying second hand).

I am not sure how much more simply I can put it.

Maybe you didn’t know this, but it’s not only goods sold on Shein and Temu that are made in China. Shock, horror. Also, these second hand goods you are buying, they were made somewhere right, they didn’t fall out of the sky.

So, how exactly are you guaranteeing that these goods have nothing to do with Chinese supply chains and therefore slave Labour? Is the question any clearer?

Jumpingthruhoops · 25/10/2025 22:52

Bagsintheboot · 25/10/2025 22:18

Sorry but this argument is totally fatuous.

There is NO valid excuse to use slavery in this day and age.

Absolutely none.

You certainly don't get to use slavery to bring yourself "a little bit of joy".

I mean what the actual fuck. What else is it ok to use slaves for as long as it's cheap.

What actual proof do you have that slave labour is used? I mean actual real proof? And, more to the point, what proof do you have that 'ethical' companies are just that? Because they 'say so'? 🙄

The fact is, unless you live in a commune in the wilderness, wear the same rags day in day out, never buy anything for your kids, and never use ANY hair/body/make-up products, you're just as responsible for keeping the 'trade' going as 'Sharon at No.37' who orders some cheap toys from Shein!

You should be aware that not all Chinese supply chains involve slave labour. It is however a known issue with Temu and Shein suppliers.

So you are basically buying the same Chinese made goods, manufactured in the same supply chains that you are arguing against. But somehow lecturing others to avoid SHEIN and Temu. Probably because it is easy to virtue signal.

Thanks for clarifying.

I don't know if English isn't your first language, but you're either deliberately misunderstanding my posts or you're not understanding them.

This conversation is becoming circular and I'm not going to keep repeating myself, so I will simply refer you back to what I've already posted.

If you're happy to knowingly use slave labour to get your cheap merchandise, then we're never going to see eye to eye.

It’s not the same though, is it? She’s not giving the companies that use slave labour any of her money.

I was given 23 pencils for a class of 31 so yes there are schools that don’t have enough resources for all their pupils and god forbid if some get lost - there aren’t any to replace them! You clearly haven’t worked in a school if you think we’d get away with saying children can’t write becuase we don’t have the resources. If a parent would ever like to donate an ethically sourced box of pencils to a class so I wouldn’t have to use my own salary I would be delighted. Somehow I don’t think that’s likely to happen though.

Oh god please don’t buy pencils for school children from Temu, they will get chewed and may well have lead paint on.
