This Christmas?
I know it’s mainly a cost thing but if it’s achievable, can people possibly manage with less stuff?

No - stop being elitist. People will shop where they can afford to shop. Just because you have less money doesnt mean you ‘deserve’ less things. These corporations will prosper whatever the common person does so just stop with your trying to save the world - it makes no difference

Bushmillsbabe · 25/10/2025 22:08

I won't buy from shein, temu or aliexpress - my daughter is forever asking for things from there, my answer is a clear no. I appreciate lots of clothes aren't great in manufacture methods, even from m and s etc, but I feel these are even worse, with labour sometimes coming from whole tribes of people (such as the Uyghurs) who the Chinese government has imprisoned for no crime and using as slave labour (whilst also denouncing slavery through history!). Which I appreciate doesn't make the low wage sweatshops in Bangladesh etc in any way ok, but this feel much worse.

However I would not presume to tell other people where they can shop

Tiebiter · 25/10/2025 22:08

I don't buy off shein or temu but I do buy from Amazon and I'm aware people just buy from temu and then sell it on Amazon with a huge mark up.

Digdongdoo · 25/10/2025 22:08

Jumpingthruhoops · 25/10/2025 22:05

That's not what this is about though: it's not about just buying 'shit'... it's about buying shit specifically from Shein and Temu for Christmas! Which for some people is all they can manage in order to give their children what they believe will be a fun Christmas. What you think of that is neither here nor there.

Just buy less stuff. Christmas really doesn't need to be about having lots of things to unwrap.

Screamingabdabz · 25/10/2025 22:08

You’re pissing in the wind op. So many people are rubbing their hands with glee at all the cheap
shit they can buy, no one gives a shit about the human misery and slavery until it affects them or their family. And the more people enable the Chinese economy that’ll happen sooner than we think.

Toottooot · 25/10/2025 22:09

What about AliExpress? I’ve had some cracking genuine branded items from there? Div you approve?

No that’s the same slave made cheap goods from a dystopian nightmare too. Well done you. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

But you are assuming people buying from these sites are buying masses of stuff. Most people on low incomes are buying far less than those with more money.

WildLimePoet · 25/10/2025 22:12

It’s always the same people virtue signalling and telling those with less money how to live.

The same out of touch, hard of thinking with their luxury beliefs. Telling people buy only from local farm shops even it means they consume less. Not buy online etc.

It’s great to see people buying as much they can afford and being able to enjoy the things that these virtue signallers don’t want others to enjoy. I hope people buy more and more.

Spending more or buying more items?

Don't come crying when Temu etc capture the markets entirely and then drive prices up. Because that is what will happen. This cheap crap will become expensive crap. Careful what you wish for.

“Elitist” ha what a joke. If you saw my life that’s the first time I’d ever be called that.

I haven’t got a pot to piss in but I’d rather go without unnecessary future-landfill crap than be a proud sponsor of human slavery and a wasteful consumer of the earth’s resources.

It’s called having integrity.

Bagsintheboot · 25/10/2025 22:18

Jumpingthruhoops · 25/10/2025 21:57

And, so what!? You know, it's OK for people to just want things that might bring them a little joy!? For however momentarily that may be...

Sorry but this argument is totally fatuous.

There is NO valid excuse to use slavery in this day and age.

Absolutely none.

You certainly don't get to use slavery to bring yourself "a little bit of joy".

I mean what the actual fuck. What else is it ok to use slaves for as long as it's cheap.

ninjahamster · 25/10/2025 22:19

Digdongdoo · 25/10/2025 22:13

Spending more or buying more items?

I think I probably buy far less items at Xmas than the average person.Ditto Xmas food. No xmas trips out like pantomimes or light trails. No real xmas tree. Decorations years old.
I don’t buy from Temu so there is loads to open, I buy so there are some things to open.

Happyhappymeee · 25/10/2025 22:19

ConnectingPoint · 25/10/2025 22:05

Oh come on…a school with NO pens and pencils…

And if they really haven't, the children can't write, leaders would soon know.

Meanwhile you are filling a very basic gap with pens and pencils that maybe toxic. If a child is ill, or a parent complains about unethically sourced products, do you really think your excellent (can't even plan for the school to have pencils) leaders are going to defend you?

I was given 23 pencils for a class of 31 so yes there are schools that don’t have enough resources for all their pupils and god forbid if some get lost - there aren’t any to replace them! You clearly haven’t worked in a school if you think we’d get away with saying children can’t write becuase we don’t have the resources. If a parent would ever like to donate an ethically sourced box of pencils to a class so I wouldn’t have to use my own salary I would be delighted. Somehow I don’t think that’s likely to happen though.

Eh? Have you been hibernating for the last 30 years since online shopping has taken off? You seem to not have a clue about this works.

MossAndLeaves · 25/10/2025 22:21

This is worrying as many things on amazon seem to be resold temu items too

But why would a top from Shein be more likely to end up in landfill than a top from Next?
Or a manicure kit from Temu be more likely to end up in landfill than one from Boots?

DiscoBeat · 25/10/2025 22:22

I agree totally. Please shop responsibly. We need less stuff and more thought.

Do you have stopped buying everything made in China? Do enlighten us as to how you are extricating your purchasing from Products linked to Chinese supply chains.

Or are you just virtue signalling.

Tollington · 25/10/2025 22:24

Buy cheap, buy twice

I make every effort to avoid doing so. For example, most of the clothes I buy are second hand as is my phone.

There is absolutely no excuse for buying unnecessary stuff from Temu when you know there is slave labour in the chain. Absolutely none.

For what other reasons do you find slavery acceptable?

Define unnecessary?

Are socks unnecessary?
Period pants?
cutlery?
screwdrivers?
tape measures?
wellington boots?
pyjamas?
sunglasses?
reading glasses?

But tell us how you have managed to stop buying everything that is linked to Chinese supply chains. It is a major achievement which we’d like to know about. So go on, how have you done it?
