This Christmas?
I know it’s mainly a cost thing but if it’s achievable, can people possibly manage with less stuff?

I use Shein and Temu. Money is really tight and that is what I can afford.
I don’t have children, mine are all adults, and would probably avoid for toys but gadgets and gizmos, clothes, advent calendars, stocking fillers are fine from there. I probably wouldn’t buy beauty bits.
The link with child labour goes bother me but in an ideal world I’d have enough money to buy ethically locally sourced products. But I don’t.

Is what you buy from there really, truly essential though with no other options (like charity shops or Vinted) accessible to you? Because otherwise the "I know they use child slaves but I really need it" line isn't a good look.

LifeBeginsToday · 25/10/2025 18:43

I tell teen DDs that there is no away. If you buy clothes of such poor quality with the mindset that they can just be donated, but the charity shop doesn't want them so they throw them away. But away doesn't exist. They have to go somewhere. The planet is drowning.

Gettingbysomehow · 25/10/2025 18:43

I never buy from either. I can't get past the pop ups.

winterbluess · 25/10/2025 18:45

Strawberryorangejuice · 25/10/2025 18:19

Will you be asking people not to buy on Amazon given many of the items are from the same factories?

Exactly the same just more expensive!

smilingfanatic · 25/10/2025 18:46

Love this thread.

'The child labour element does bother me but....fuck those 5 year old Chinese factory slaves, I am skint and I need all this plastic shit.'

gamerchick · 25/10/2025 18:49

I've never used them. I don't really understand it much because it doesn't make sense. Theyre still scammy sites in my head.

Lilyhatesjaz · 25/10/2025 18:49

When China had those big military parades earlier in the year, I thought to myself that it's us in the west buying all their crap paying for it.

Strawberryorangejuice · 25/10/2025 18:50

winterbluess · 25/10/2025 18:45

Yes! Drives me mad the calls to not buy from Temu and SHEIN by people I know who happily use their Prime subscription to get things quickly!

Don't get me wrong, I don't agree it's great but I think people bury their head in the sand about Amazon being the same!

aufolandedonmyface · 25/10/2025 18:50

Ive been trying to buy brands that are made in britain i has this idea of wanting to use my money in this country. Its really hard though ive been trying to find clothes made here or shoes and i nearly always cant - i cant spend hundreds on one dress or whatever so i end up buying a dress in sainsburys or whatever.

ilsalund · 25/10/2025 18:52

I don't buy from either - however, people do not want to hear about how awful they are.
I mentioned it once in work and others practically rolled their eyes at me. When they talk about their Shien and Primark hauls now I just don't join in the conversation

TheGoddessAthena · 25/10/2025 18:54

Nothing wrong with buying a dress in Sainsbury’s. You know it’s safe and not going to go up in flames. You know that Sainsbury’s as a uk based company try to avoid using sweatshops and slave labour. You know Sainsbury’s aren’t stealing designs from small independent firms. Sainsbury’s creates jobs for local workers in their stores. Your dress from Sainsbury’s is 1000 times better than one from a Chinese tat site.

LittleCarrot12 · 25/10/2025 18:19

Temu order delivered yesterday and ordered Shein last night. The UK is ridiculously expensive and I need to live

This

TheDandyLion · 25/10/2025 18:57

I wouldnt even touch the website, their tracking cookies are following your browsing traffic to profile you and then show you ads of their copycat products to make you spend more money. Never mind the fact they use questionable production methods etc.

Pleasegetmeacoffeesotired · 25/10/2025 18:41

None of those things are fine from there.

Well I am very pleased with them.

Except for the child slaves though, right?

I don’t leave the house so cannot shop in person. I find vinted really pricey.

None of that means you have to buy from Shein or Temu. Other, safer, non-slave labour websites are available.

And fuck the planet, right?

Nopenott0day · 25/10/2025 19:00

Yabu. Simply for the use of "swerve" and not "Avoid".

Or just deciding that actually you don’t need another pair of jeans to add to the 25 you have, or that instead of plastic shit for your niece, you’ll buy them a pizza or Nando’s voucher.

FlatErica · 25/10/2025 19:02

TheGoddessAthena · 25/10/2025 18:22

Depressing. People think they have the right to endless piles of shit for their children, made by enslaved people or children. I hate what Christmas has been turned into with the hauls and piles of tat and “cute bits”. Fuck the planet, fuck sustainability, I want I want I want.

I couldn’t agree more.

ninjahamster · 25/10/2025 19:02

Bagsintheboot · 25/10/2025 18:58

Like I said, it makes me uncomfortable. But I do want people to have gifts at Christmas.
Many other companies also have connections to child labour. Nestle, new look, h and m, Apple…

You've got more money than a Temu slave

Fabulous, please give me the links to them. Assuming they are affordable?

GriGreen · 25/10/2025 19:04

99% tat but their Loop style ear plugs are great. Much easier than losing at £25 pair.
