To ask if my joke to new work colleague would have offended you?

Abbeymum · 25/10/2025 07:58

We are quite a small team and had a new staff member join this week. It’s a very friendly and jokey culture so we are always light heartedly ribbing each other.

Anyway - new colleague was eating a salad with two boiled eggs. We were chatting and she says that’s a usual weekday lunch for her. I replied that I bet she has stocked up on the air freshener for when she’s home.

Blank face…sense of humour failure on her part?

Offended no, i dont have the mn curse of needing to be offended every time i leave the house but I just dont think it was funny and it would have taken me a while to work it out as I never thought eggs did that

Exactly this ^^

It's very childish and unfunny.

I enjoy a bit of banter at work, but it needs to be genuinely funny, and this isn't. It's something a seven year might find funny.

WildFlowerBees · 25/10/2025 09:15

Sounds like very basic childlike humour. I’d not have found it funny because it’s not, it’s just childish humour.

LavenderRagdoll · 25/10/2025 09:15

You really need to work on your wit.

Fart jokes are ‘kids’ jokes.

Jeevesnotwooster · 25/10/2025 09:15

I would just think it was weird.

Screamingabdabz · 25/10/2025 09:17

It’s not you op. It’s a well known comedy trope “they’re egg sandwiches aren’t they Mrs Doyle?”

Some fuckers are so po-faced. It’s pointless trying to be anything less than some tea-with-the-vicar robot in workplaces now.

Thepeopleversuswork · 25/10/2025 09:19

Why do people with poor humour always confuse thinking a joke is desperately unfunny with “being offended”?

People with immature senses of humour and bad social skills will reflexively say “you can’t take a joke” or “you’re too easily offended” if you don’t roar with laughter at some terrible joke.

No, not offended. Just think your joke is shit and it’s made me question whether you are as decent and smart as I thought you were.

Bahhhhhumbug · 25/10/2025 09:19

EleanorReally · 25/10/2025 08:14

i wouldnt understand the joke either tbh

I'm another one who can just imagine Ricky Gervais delivering this line in The Office , then doing that awkward stupid grin he does whilst waiting for the hilarity of his joke to hit. . then saying 'you'll get used to us , it's just banter , we're all mad here'

aWeeCornishPastie · 25/10/2025 09:20

Not really very funny tbh am not surprised she showed a blank face

Scout2016 · 25/10/2025 09:21

Oh god, imagine getting a new job and then finding out it's a "bants" type place. I'd be so dissappointed. I really hope it was made clear to her before she accepted the job.

Hopefully she'll just think you're a bit of a dick and not take it seriously and change her lunch habits, now you've suggested she / it smells.

Edited

Exactly. I am not offended by it but its an embarrassingly shit "joke".

It reminds me of a comedian standing on a stage telling these terrible jokes whilst the audience is silent and tumbleweed blows through the room.

People arent offended, they just dont find you as hilariously witty as you think you are.

Yep. Definitely a tumbleweed moment. I’m experiencing second hand embarrassment for OP.

NavyViewer · 25/10/2025 09:24

The reason is your “joke” was not funny.

Beenwhereyouareagain · 25/10/2025 09:24

YABU- it's rude to make comments about what someone is eating. Whether it's a remark about the food itself, how much or how often they eat it, or what it looks or smells like, keep your opinions to yourself and don't embarrass someone over their lunch.

Why do people feel they have a right to do this? Why did you?

butterpuffed · 25/10/2025 08:48

I wouldn't mind working with you , it was just a joke . PPs don't have much of a SOH , prefer to be offended!

Such a telling comment.

very few on this thread have said they find it offensive, just not funny. but that doesn't mean they don't have a sense of humour- it's just a different one.

The people that jump to the "no sense of humour" are usually the ones who are offended that someone doesn't find them funny.

i certainly don't find it offensive, just not funny. But the reaction of the op would tell me that they are likely a bit of a mean girl type who doesn't like it when someone doesn't find their jokes funny.

I’d be updating my CV !!

KittyWilkinson · 25/10/2025 09:27

It's the kind of remark I'd expect from someone who has a gob which runs away with them, but justifies it as banter, and likes telling it as it is.

An egg salad is hardly Cool Hand Luke league.

Have you tried being interesting or original or funny?

Glitchymn1 · 25/10/2025 09:27

Blarghism · 25/10/2025 08:01

Do eggs make people fart? I've never found that.

I don’t think they make you flatulent but they definitely can add an aroma?

I’d have laughed too. I might have been a bit embarrassed too though- she’s new to the team!

I agree with these points. I love going to see comedians and laughing until I ache. I just didn't find the OP's "banter" funny at all.

Griegecurtains · 25/10/2025 09:28

Toilet humour actually turns my stomach. And if this is par for the course in your workplace she's probably rethinking her career choices

Glitchymn1 · 25/10/2025 09:28

Plus eggs in the office is a no no where I work, because they often stink the place down. You aren’t allowed any type of ‘smelly’ food.

Noshadelamp · 25/10/2025 09:28

It's rude to comment on people's food and also digestive systems, let alone both together.

Blank face was due to the shock that someone actually said that out loud to her.

but did you actually laugh or eye roll (perhaps that should that be egg roll 🙊) @Screamingabdabz?

I'd just think you were a twit to be avoided in the future

Eenameenadeeka · 25/10/2025 09:29

Sense of humor failure on your part, I'm afraid.
