To ask if my joke to new work colleague would have offended you?

We are quite a small team and had a new staff member join this week. It’s a very friendly and jokey culture so we are always light heartedly ribbing each other.

Anyway - new colleague was eating a salad with two boiled eggs. We were chatting and she says that’s a usual weekday lunch for her. I replied that I bet she has stocked up on the air freshener for when she’s home.

Blank face…sense of humour failure on her part?

Urgh- people like you OP make me absolutely cringe.

You think toilet humour is so hilarious and it comes across as so juvenile and un-funny.

I am embarrassed for you.

PaddlingSwan · 25/10/2025 08:32

Air freshener? What is that? Something sold to the "lower orders"?
Not surprised your colleague looked blank, ery poor taste, vulgar and not remotely funny.

Eh?

Onegingerhead · 25/10/2025 08:51

I wouldn’t be offended because I would have missed it. I regularly have boiled eggs for breakfast but don’t spoil the office atmosphere 😳

phoenixrosehere · 25/10/2025 08:51

YABU

The only one who reads to be offended is you because someone didn’t find your joke funny.

I wouldn’t laugh either because I don’t see how it is funny.

I would have given a mmhmm of acknowledgment and kept eating because my energy would be in trying to keep my face neutral instead of rolling my eyes and trying not to offend you by asking you to explain what you mean. I don’t associate eggs to farts.

Toooldtopretend · 25/10/2025 08:13

Are you David Brent?

Spot on!

aCatCalledFawkes · 25/10/2025 08:53

I just find your "joke" cringy, even more cringy you think of yourself as funny.

tragichero · 25/10/2025 08:54

I would probably have smiled weakly because I am a people pleaser, but not really found it remotely funny, sorry OP.

I have some friends who like fart jokes etc, but I find them a bit gross in honesty. Not offended exactly. Just very slightly repulsed.

Maybe save that humour for colleagues who you know love it, next time. No major harm done, you just failed to read the room very well.

Topseyt123 · 25/10/2025 08:55

Considering you hardly know her, it was a rude and stupid comment from you.

I say that as someone who finds farts and the humour around them funny. You should have left her in peace to eat her food.

You came across as crude, and a bit of an arse to be honest.

ClaredeBear · 25/10/2025 08:56

She probably had to think for a minute as she didn’t get it, then, when she did, she just didn’t think it was funny, just a bit immature. She was probably feeling a bit awkward.

GameOfJones · 25/10/2025 08:57

I like a laugh too and we have a similar team at work where we have a bit of banter....but your "joke" wasn't funny? I think it says a lot about your social skills (or lack of) that you would happily make toilet jokes in front of people you've only just met.

Isobel201 · 25/10/2025 08:57

YABU bad joke and not one to make to who is essentially a stranger to you.

EleanorReally · 25/10/2025 08:57

i avoid colleagues who make comments about my lunch, it is so intrusive and unnecessary.

PistachioTiramisu · 25/10/2025 08:57

I would have had the same blank stare, and then when I realised what you meant I would have been terribly embarrassed. I hate 'jokes' about bodily functions which so many so-called comedians see to rely on these days - not at all funny.

HostaCentral · 25/10/2025 08:58

windchimeheaven · 25/10/2025 08:44

Eggs don't even stink. If I were banned from taking eggs I'd probably take tuna, just to make a point.

Yes they do, and you are therefore just as bad.

godmum56 · 25/10/2025 08:58

Simonjt · 25/10/2025 08:03

I wouldn’t have been offended, but I would assume you struggle with social skills and possibly have a poor diet if you think a salad and two eggs would cause bowel issues.

this. And I would have gone a bit frosty faced over it because I would not have known how to respond.

Well, I've learned something from this thread anyway: Some people can smell eggs. I had no idea. I don't smell them and had no idea some other people could.

MidnightMusing5 · 25/10/2025 09:01

I think she was rude for eating boiled eggs in a small office .

HostaCentral · 25/10/2025 09:02

Do people honestly think eggs don't stink!! Well I have learned something too. As previously posted, eggs, tuna, popcorn, cheese and onion crisps, all absolutely honk.

BadgernTheGarden · 25/10/2025 09:02

Probably thought you were criticising what she was eating, which you were. Not faintly funny and they may worry about what they are allowed to eat by the egg police, not nice to a new member of staff.

MumoftwoNC · 25/10/2025 09:03

Abbeymum · 25/10/2025 08:02

It’s a good job you don’t work with us, then!

Indeed. I'm in the majority though according to the poll.

I'm not totally joyless, I can appreciate some humour (in moderation) in the workplace. But the best humour is usually self deprecating and/or clever in some way, like incorporating a pun.

Your joke was poor in two ways:
1, It was at the expense of the other person (rather than yourself or a mutual enemy like HMRC or a nightmare client or something)
2, it was about bodily functions, a big no-no when someone is eating.

The only way you could have made it worse is if you brought in sex, politics or religion.

They stink! 🤣 They are one of the most anti-social things you can eat in a small office.
They make me 🤢 a bit when my daughter eats them at home but at least I can open a window or go to another room.
I guess at least the smell doesnt linger too much. Unlike the microwave fish someone at my work has every Friday. You can still smell it on Saturday.

Blarghism · 25/10/2025 09:03

OP, were you trying to say that her lunch stinks or were you saying that eggs (or salad?) make you fart?

Invinoveritaz · 25/10/2025 09:04

You think you need to get your digestion checked out.
I can eat 2 eggs without any effect. I think I would have looked blankly too as I wasn’t’ aware till now that eating eggs was a thing.

Also I was brought up to believe it’s rude to comment on other people’s food. I think it’s impolite so yabu.

RisingSunn · 25/10/2025 09:04

I wouldn't be offended but wouldn't laugh because I don't find crass jokes particularly funny.
