To ask if my joke to new work colleague would have offended you?

We are quite a small team and had a new staff member join this week. It’s a very friendly and jokey culture so we are always light heartedly ribbing each other.

Anyway - new colleague was eating a salad with two boiled eggs. We were chatting and she says that’s a usual weekday lunch for her. I replied that I bet she has stocked up on the air freshener for when she’s home.

Blank face…sense of humour failure on her part?

Mean

Notmyreality · 25/10/2025 07:59

The blank face is probably because it’s a shit joke and not funny, not because she was offended. She was probably embarrassed for you.

xxxwd · 25/10/2025 07:59

I would have cringed and definitely not laughed. Personally, I don’t find fart jokes funny because I’m not a 12 year old boy.

ClarissR · 25/10/2025 07:59

Gross and unprofessional! I wouldn’t have known how to react either.

SillyQuail · 25/10/2025 08:00

I can eat 2 boiled eggs without needing air freshener so I'd say you just revealed more about your own digestion than you intended! At best I might have laughed awkwardly.

TofuEater · 25/10/2025 08:00

I would have found it childish and not funny at all

Nickyknackered · 25/10/2025 08:00

I mean, not offended but I wouldn't have laughed as it's not funny. I have a sense of humour but i guess it's a bit more sophisticated than toilet jokes.

FastFood · 25/10/2025 08:00

No its just not funny

SapphOhNo · 25/10/2025 08:01

New colleague just has second hand embarrassment for you.

AmethystAnnotation · 25/10/2025 08:01

It isn't particularly funny but I wouldn't have been offended by it.

Guildford321 · 25/10/2025 08:01

Its a bit crass to insinuate that your new colleague is going to fart the house down.

OnlyFangs · 25/10/2025 08:01

That was a joke you make to someone you have known for a decade (if you must make it) not to a new work colleague

(Although it should be a sackable offence to eat eggs in the office )

idri · 25/10/2025 08:01

I would’ve laughed

Blarghism · 25/10/2025 08:01

Do eggs make people fart? I've never found that.

ApiratesaysYarrr · 25/10/2025 08:01

Some people find fart humour really disgusting, so I would have saved the "grosser" jokes for when I knew they shared that sense of humour.

It's not that big a deal, she presumably just doesn't find it funny (although she might think that you are a bit childish), so I'd rein in the banter and let her lead with any jokes - if/when she joins in , you'll have a better idea of where to pitch things.

I hate this kind of thing, hate it.

HansHolbein · 25/10/2025 08:02

Not nice for a brand new colleague tbh. Shit joke as well.

Soupandaroll · 25/10/2025 08:02

We have a banter person at my work who makes bodily function jokes like that. I’ve got used to them now and don’t take them seriously but to start with I wasn’t sure if she was being a bit mean-girl. I would say that at the very least you should get to know the person and their sense of humour before unleashing “banter” on them which might make them embarrassed or uncomfortable.

It’s a good job you don’t work with us, then!

I wouldn’t have been offended but would eating 2 eggs warrant air freshener? I often eat 2 eggs and haven’t ever noticed it makes me fart more than usual.
I wouldn’t have laughed (because it’s not funny) but I would deduce that you think it meant I’d be farting. I’d be equally plain faced I think.

PegDope · 25/10/2025 08:03

I would have given you the same blank look.

Are you a 12 year old boy?

Simonjt · 25/10/2025 08:03

I wouldn’t have been offended, but I would assume you struggle with social skills and possibly have a poor diet if you think a salad and two eggs would cause bowel issues.

Whatafustercluck · 25/10/2025 08:03

As a new employee in an unfamiliar environment I'd most likely have been embarrassed. I think it's fine to laugh and joke and 'rib' each other when you know someone well enough.

McSpoot · 25/10/2025 08:03

Sense of humour failure on her part?

Nope - the failure was on your part.

SkippyKangeroo · 25/10/2025 08:04

I get massive 2nd hand embarrassment for people who think they are hilarious.

This was inappropriate & unfunny, and the colleague will have a perfectly fine sense of humour , you however...
