Motherfucking fireworks

How is this allowed past 8pm, I don't understand.

Cat is terrified, kid took 2 hours to get to sleep only to be woken up 10 min ago by more frigging fireworks.

how on earth is this still allowed??

I hate this time of year.

It's f** triggering. These twats should go and help in Gaza, I'm sure they would not be firing frigging fireworks after that experience !!

thanks for listening :( :( :(

I agree in part, but fireworks provide so many negatives and very few positives. They are something that is unnecessary, it’s silly to compare them to living, sentient creatures that we share the planet with. I know 3 people that have scars from fireworks, one severe facial scars. I don’t spend much time thinking about them, but when I do, it’s crazy to me that they’re not banned

Fireworks and pets are equally 'unnecessary'. Fireworks and pets both bring joy. Fireworks and pets both cause injury.

Every flipping year, the same complaints.

”my dog/cat is terrified”

well you chose to have them - and I guarantee fireworks were a thing when you made that decision, so you decided to give a dog/cat a home in an environment where there would be potentially scary things happening multiple times a year. No one forced you to.

Also, there are thousands of ppl, adults and. children, who are terrified of dogs, and, unless they stay in their house, can’t avoid them 365 days a year.

“it stops my child from sleeping”
well can you honestly say your child has never disturbed someone else with crying, either thru the walls of your house, or in a shop/cafe? Plenty do, and again, you choose to have a child.

Im saying all this as someone who has a dog, who, while decidedly not happy, isn’t really terrified by fireworks, and a cat that definitely is, but that’s my job to manage, cos I chose to home them in a housing estate where fireworks were let off at times during the year.

My point is that none of us have an absolute right to never be inconvenienced by other people’s life choices, and our life choices aren’t magically better or more important that someone else’s, regardless of how trivial we think the are.

Cat having a right to roam, dog ownership, fireworks, and even having kids, can all potentially impact others negatively, yet are all legal, and all will be important to some, and an irritation to others.

Deal with your choices, live your life, and let others live theirs.

Well let's flip that around by saying that none of us have an absolute right to inconvenience others with our life choices....

It’s a hard one because I believe they’re a big part of the tradition for Diwali, as of course they are for bonfire night, which is in some ways as close as we come to a “national day” (no one ever celebrated St George when I was young - edit to this - I am Catholic before anyone says “oh it’s anti Catholic”)

On the other hand pets are terrified and even more importantly veterans who fought for this country can be profoundly affected by them, as can refugees from war torn countries.

I would propose no public sale of fireworks and only to be held on specified days. I know Diwali is several days, but I think it would be ok to specific one or two, and then one or two nights for bonfire night (maybe the 5th and the nearest Saturday).

There’s no need for an entire firework season from mid Oct to mid Nov.

New Year’s Eve doesn’t need fireworks in my book - that’s another newish thing anyway.

I think that’s a fair compromise.

I don’t agree with keeping them to very early evening - I think for Diwali there’s a significance to the time and also children are only very little for a brief time and occasionally we have to suck up a bit of noise.

Edit - btw I personally love fireworks.

Only very entitled people would think they had more right to be alive than an animal we share tge planet with. Humans domesticated some animals but it’s very shit to just think that a living creature doesn’t matter or only as much as an explosive.

Gwyne · 21/10/2025 09:37

I can’t believe people compare having a cat or a dog with fireworks.
Having pets improves your quality of life (if you like pets). Fireworks are totally unnecessary to anyone’s quality of life.
I quite like the organised events, but apart from that they should be banned.

I think some people are just looking for a reaction and for some attention. They just look ridiculous though.

Pets improve your quality of life IF you like them, they can and do reduce the quality of life of other people, who might be scared and or irritated or inconvenienced by them.

Its not comparing a firework with an animal, obviously, it’s comparing the affect on others of them.

The point is that your opinion of a cat or a dog or a firework, isn’t any more flipping valid than anyone else’s - and I can’t believe, as a dog owner myself, that anyone can suggest that dogs do not bring a fuck-ton of negative consequences to society as a whole, far more than fireworks do.

But they are a living creature, they have a right to exist as much as humans. Fireworks….nope, completely different.

I do love fireworks but I agree, they should be reserved for specific and advertised public events, banned for all private sales.

It would be a fair compromise and everybody would be happier.

It's not difficult to implement either, if fireworks are banned, they can't be sold and it's easy to prosecute and stop those who would buy some on the black market. Why are we not doing that?

I am actually terrified of dogs so they don’t bring any benefit to me personally at all, however, I would not even start comparing dog ownership to setting off fireworks left right and centre at any time of your choosing. It’s just anti social.

OhGoveUckYourself · 21/10/2025 10:00

Some idiots were still letting them off at 2:30 this morning. No consideration for other people.

I love dogs, well all animals really, but I totally sympathise with you and others who fear them. Good owners make sure that their dogs wouldn’t come near you, but I know there are many inconsiderate owners out there who don’t seem to care about others and think everyone wants their dog all over them. Idiots.

As you say though, there is no comparison to fireworks.

Why, because we don’t want our pets traumatised? We are a nation of animal lovers. The wellbeing of dogs etc of our wildlife come before some idiots right to set off fireworks on a random night.

This year is the first time we have had a pet in our house at firework season. Adult DD is on holiday so we are cat-sitting. He is just over a year old and completely a house cat.

Last night at about 9pm someone started setting off fireworks near by. He shot up awake out of his bed so I was ready to go and provide comfort and reassurance. However, it turned out what he really wanted to do was go sit in the window sill so he could watch! Grin

mootymoomoo · 21/10/2025 10:24

I agree, there should be a reasonable time limit set. I thought last night (when it was blasting) that 8pm should be the cut-off. We had a message on FB apologising in advance they will be playing till 10:30pm... It was an unpleasant night. The worst thing is they set off the loudest one at the end!

There is respect for religion and/or tradition (not looking forward to bonfire night!), and there's respect for the community/estate you live in.

I think private sale of fireworks should be banned altogether! Aren't they also bad for the environment? And whose job is it to clean up the flyaways the next morning?

Ok maybe there should be a cut off before that, like 11 pm.

But I think limiting it to 2-4 nights per year (1/2 for Diwali, 1/2 for bonfire night) it doesn’t need something daft like an 8 pm cut off - adults and non-toddler children do need to be allowed to make some noise in the world)

Lol, that’s funny and quite unusual. We did have a cat years ago that was happy to watch the fireworks but he was deaf.

ldnmusic87 · 21/10/2025 10:35

Firework sales should be completely limited to licensed events.

I hate the noise.

Well if you drive and eat any meat or dairy products, you are inconveniencing these animals far more than some fireworks. HTH.

redboxer321 · 21/10/2025 10:38

Fireworks aren't every night. They are at certain predictable times of the year.

Yes, you're right. I really should have predicted that some inconsiderate arsehole would have let fireworks off at 11pm (ish) on January 6 and I should have waited before taking my dog out for a goodnight wee. Perhaps until late spring/early summer.

Elbowpatch · 21/10/2025 10:41

I love them. Particularly the noisy ones. However, we only get them on Nov 5th round here. Sometimes the weekend before or after.

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 21/10/2025 10:59

I swear fireworks have got louder over the years. It wouldn't be so bad if it was on one or two dates but it's the week before, the week after Bonfire Night. Then New Year, birthdays, weddings, graduations, proms, any excuse for fireworks. People shouldn't be allowed big fireworks for garden displays, they should be banned.

My cat hates them, he goes and hides. You can see the fear in his eyes, although he also hides at Halloween because of all the noise (my area is ridiculous at Halloween as people from elsewhere come). He's a very noise sensitive cat.

Careful… if the OP hears you, they might explode louder than the fireworks themselves.
