Running
Walking
Football (an hour a week kick about with other like minded women)
Painting - like to do evening, one off events (pubpainting.co.uk do good obes but im sure there are others all over the country)
Painting figures - I have a Zombicide game set, I do that whilst DH does his Warhammer

I want to try wild swimming but havent yet. Joined local Bluetits on FB but havent been yet. They seem friendly.

DuchessofStaffordshire · 21/10/2025 07:11

Running: absolute bliss. Just me and the dog down the canal towpath.
Lifting weights: sometimes heavy, sometimes lighter.
Tricky crosswords.
Watching TV. Caveat: I'm unable to just sit and watch TV without something else on the go so have been doing a load of stretching lately which feels great. Hoping to be able to manage the splits again soon. Otherwise will do a puzzle, cross-stitch, crotchet etc.
Podcasts.
Walking; I've come to appreciate the changing seasons more as I've aged for some reason.

Child-rearing
Cooking
Laundry
Cleaning
Searching for objects lost by others

I’ve got multiple children and it’s just me doing everything for them so if a hobby is collapsing on the bed while my toddler falls asleep and myself falling asleep at 8.30 listening to an audiobook, that’s my hobby.

Seriously though, I’d love to have a hobby again. I’m really good at needlework so I might get back into that in a decade.

Edited

This is me. I was reading the thread, thinking who has time for all this?! My only hobby at this point is scrolling Mumsnet whilst breastfeeding... Soldarity!

I have the “obsession that wears off” / “spend lots of money then consign it to the back of the cupboard” habit. I wiiiiish I wasn’t like that!

Sell things on eBay/Vinted/FB Marketplace? Look for things second hand or see if you can join a club where kit is included, for beginners at least.

What are you looking for? Does it need to be in the house or can you go out? Active, craft, educational, on or off screens? Does it have to be cheap or can you spend money on it?

I walk and listen to podcasts, swim (outside so mostly in the summer as I'm not a hardy cold water type) and read. I sometimes go to museums/galleries or similar or even go on extreme day trips - so far have had days out to Poland and Ireland, but there's also a few places in Spain and Germany I want to go but the days that the cheap flights at the right times have not coincided with the days I've been able to take off work.

I would like to spend more time painting, learning photography, genealogy and do more extreme day trips but life (work mainly, I'm child free) gets in the way.

'Hobbies are for people who don't read books' as Mattie Simpkin said.

Things I do outside work:
Reading
Swimming and yoga (to keep fit)
Gardening (to grow food)
Baking (to eat nice things)
Photography (for memories)
And I spend more time than I should thinking about decorating our house.

KittyRannaldini · 21/10/2025 08:02

Knitting
Sewing- I love finding vintage/old patterns (I love this with knitting too)
Cooking, which is unfortunate because I'm fat Grin I collect very old cookery books
Allotment
I used to write, I should start that again. Very therapeutic.

notacooldad · 21/10/2025 11:10

I don't consider them "hobbies" as such - just "activities that keep me busy and which I enjoy
Isn't doing an activity you enjoy that keeps you busy a hobby?

Hobbies are for people who don't read books' as Mattie Simpkin said
I know its from a fictional character but what a load of nonsens.

Welshwabbit · 21/10/2025 11:24

Cold water swimming. Great time of year to start!
Playing the piano (hardly ever at the moment, but in fits and starts)
Reading

That's me

I have more yarn then a yarn shop, seriously thousands of pounds and a dozen or so half completed projects

Nail gels, dips and polishes to open my own nail bar

At least walking/hiking isnt too expensive, although even there I have plenty of coats and rucksacks

Sometimes the buying becomes the hobby

EveryDayisFriday · 21/10/2025 14:51

My first finished painting (by numbers). I'm so pleased that I've finished a project and I really enjoyed it. Creative and focus without too much brain work and it cost less than £4 from Temu. I could dip in and out of it for as much time as I had free. I'm hooked, this is my new hobby.

That's a daft quote. I read lots of books (in several languages) and I have hobbies. Why on earth would the two things be mutually exclusive?

I think a —better— equally good question is, if you have hobbies, what do you do for a living, how many hours per week do you work, how old are any kids you have, is your husband an actual feminist who genuinely splits it all down the middle including the mental load or a pretend one who wants to wing Christmas and ‘doesn’t see mess’

It's not a better question if what you wanted was hobbies inspiration, which is what the OP said.

I teach full time, have older teenage children (one at uni) and a thoroughly useful dh, fwiw. I still don't have enough time to spend much of it on my hobbies.

Idstillratherbepaddleboarding · 21/10/2025 17:29

Pole dancing, Paddleboarding but only in summer, walking my dog but that’s not really a hobby it’s just life.

To answer a PP, I do work full time, I have a DS and I definitely don’t have a feminist DH who does 50% of the chores but I do carve an hour out every evening to myself to pole dance mainly for my mental health.

Dog showing

Cheively · 21/10/2025 17:40

Snap @Bordercollierun 😁 35 years for me now 😱

Walking obviously always but definitely don't class it as a hobby. Gardening, yoga, podcasts are things that I just do if I get time 😅

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 21/10/2025 17:41

Running, reading, walking, trying to learn a language
Will play about on the piano or guitar if I get the chance but not learning anything as such

Oh yes swimming too if I get time

Hotvimtoandwaffles · 21/10/2025 17:42

Weightlifting
crochet
watercolour painting
cryptic crosswords

I’m pretty much brand new (2 years!) but have somehow reached 3 dogs already 😂 Probably soon to be divorced!

I also walk my dogs a lot but that’s more in the chores list during winter.

Natsku · 21/10/2025 17:54

Reading, board games, card games, and more recently, woodwork.

Jewelledslice · 21/10/2025 17:57

I have horses 😅 they eat up most of my free time.
I read a great deal, if DH goes out for the night I read all night!
Not quite a hobby but I'm very active in my church.

Before marriage/dc I also did kickboxing and cycling and gym but I didn't have horses then!

I went through a phase of dolls house stuff which was amazing. But then I got bored and now I don't have space.

ByTwinklyDreamer · 21/10/2025 17:57

Aqua aerobics

Swimming

Dolls house

I also go to the cinema and travel a lot but I don’t think they are hobbies.
