To ask if I look frumpy

Do I look frumpy in this outfit? I’m early 40s. Also do I look like I’m slightly pregnant?

It's much better but your top is still too big.

Shorten the skirt, a more fitted dark top and that would look really nice. That sleeve length works for you.

There's a drastic difference between the light top and dark bottom that makes you look a bit wider there.

Merryoldgoat · 19/10/2025 19:36

You need a better bra I think OP and a slightly wider neckline.

The whole outfit lacks balance.

I think that the second outfit makes you look significantly slimmer and I think a more modern wardrobe would make a difference.

JLou08 · 19/10/2025 19:38

The jumper would look much better with slim fit trousers. I also think a v neck would be better suited to your figure, although finding one that isn't plunging isn't always easy!

It’s not a good outfit, @keepcalmanddance - but you’ve already heard that. Compare and contrast this combination of jumper and skirt:

Community Clothing skirt

And if you added any fashionable pair of knee high boots, like these:

Topshop boots

you’d have an outfit that could take you almost anywhere.

You are joking? 😅
A heavy massive skirt that drops from the OPs most unflattering point and covers her legs which are her best feature?
You know, I was a bit upset when some of you came at me saying my advice was dated, but I get it now - trendy wins even if you look like a dogs dinner 😅

manicpixieschemegirl · 19/10/2025 19:43

Starling7 · 19/10/2025 19:29

Wide Leg or flared jeans?? Hardly.

This is where trendy people go wrong.

If your best feature is your legs then the last thing you do is hide them in bulky trousers.

Sigh. If you’re an inverted triangle shape, tight fitting skirts and trousers will only emphasise this and make your top half look bigger and out of proportion.

Anyone with eyes can see that OP’s skirt is terribly unflattering. An a line skirt would balance out her shape and still allow her show off her legs.

Starling7 · 19/10/2025 19:50

thecatneuterer · 19/10/2025 14:53

But all of that would at least be an improvement on the current look. What would you suggest?

Thank you. I suggested the tights or leggings as the op feels comfortable in those.

A shorter skirt over winter tights with a layered deep v top / cardi and vest is pretty classic, the French wear this look every winter!

A statement necklace can be anything from pearls, to a chunky chain, to layered chains etc.

I think the negative reaction has been because I stated that I worked as a stylist for over 20 years 😅

Its actually quite sad

Cool - very si.ilar to what I was suggesting 🙂

Thanks so much for all the comments. Lots of great advice which lots of it I’ll try

Ok so where can I buy non iron ladies shirts? Also thanks for all advice. I’m gonna try on a different top later, tuck it in and post a pic once I’m back home

please don't go for the shirt idea - soft drape fabric is far more flattering when you have a bust and little belly.

manicpixieschemegirl · 19/10/2025 19:01

Tunics, leggings with skirts and statement necklaces aren’t classic hen, they’re dated.

Sorry but it’s still not great @keepcalmanddance - a tight skirt and oversized top is making you look top heavy big bigger than you are. I echo the posters who recommend checking out Melissa Murrell to get some ideas as to how to dress for your body type.

No one mentioned tunics darling. As other posters have demonstrated with photos, shorter lengths are better with this figure, and that is what I said.
I suggested thicker tights or leggings for winter under a shorter length for a flattering style and comfort.
Every season has its own statement necklace they aren't a specific and are always in fashion in one shape or form.

You quite literally did mention tunics - at 1.58pm today Wink

JurassicPark4Eva · 19/10/2025 18:59

Not a single thing you suggested is "classic styling".

Thick tights and leggings? Cardigans? Vest tops under v necks? Statement necklaces?

Classic styling is dressing for your shape, well made and well cut clothes, good use of colour and shape. Not leggings.

You're getting yourself confused darling.
Shorter length skirts and dresses wuth tights, with a little v cardi, a chain or pearls and a cami is absolutely classic styling for this body shape and many others! The French wear it every winter!

manicpixieschemegirl · 19/10/2025 20:08

Alternatively wear a cardi over a deep V dress or tunic - darker colours on top.

From your first post, hen @Starling7

NotMeNoNo · 19/10/2025 20:15

I'm getting loads of All Saints ads on this thread some of which are eerily appropriate (based on the short skirt comments) .
OP I'd try a session with a John Lewis stylist. You don't have to buy anything, but you can tell them you want to try some different shapes to work out what suits your figure, and you will get some ideas anyway.

This is where someone who knows the theory but doesn't have the practice falls down.

An inverted triangle shape is an athletic shape with broad shoulders tapering to a narrow waist. In this case your theory works.

However this lady is NOT an inverted triangle she is, like me, an apple.

If you put wide trousers or skirts on an apple shape you double our weight because everything drops from our waist which is our widest most unflattering point.

The best way to dress an apple shape is to divide the wider areas with a cami under deep V necks and/ or draped layers - sorry if that's unfashionable - and to show off the legs.

CharlotteCChapel · 19/10/2025 20:21

I would say boring. I like the colou of the jumper but it doesn't fit. You need either a fitted top and a fuller skirt, or a looser jumper that fits, and a straight skirt. These two are similar width so just make you look like a walking rectangular.

Sorry to be blunt. Also if you wantbto hide an area dont wear baggy clothes over it, draw the eye away from the area you want to hide. If it's your belly then you want an interesting neckline or a dramatic necklace.

Good necklace advice!

If I had to put my hand on The Holy Bible and swear under Oath then yes by that picture and in my opinion “Yes you do”. However to know for sure I’d have to see a full picture. You could have a face full of perfectly applied make up and your hair could be perfectly styled for all we know, which on some people can make a huge difference Although, I’m not expecting you to post one on a public worldwide site.

DietQueen2023 · 19/10/2025 23:15

keepcalmanddance · 19/10/2025 18:41

Is this any better?

This is better but if iron the top, pull the skirt up and lighten up the tights. ☺️

DietQueen2023 · 19/10/2025 23:27

I know what you mean @Starling7, I think some people are taking your first post too literally.

A tunic could be like the one I posted earlier, it doesn’t have to to be floral with leggings circa 2005 😆

A statement necklace doesn’t mean one of those large ones that was worn around the next in the noughties, it means a necklace that’s up to date.

etc etc

She is right about not following trends. You should update what suits you / what you normally wear with pieces from the current season.

Just from that photo I would have guessed you were 60s - sorry!

I'm in my 60s and there's no way I would wear that jumper or the outfit.

Sorry @keepcalmanddance that jumper is awful - seriously would you buy that outfit?
