Do I look frumpy in this outfit? I’m early 40s. Also do I look like I’m slightly pregnant?

I worked as a stylist for years and also have a similar figure.

As you have great legs, keep skirts / dresses short and wear with thick tights or leggings if you don't want to show too much.

Long sweaters are fine but no high necks only deep V or scoops.

Alternatively wear a cardi over a deep V dress or tunic - darker colours on top.

If you are shy about deep V necklines wear a vest in contrasting colour underneath.

A statement necklace brings the eye up and lifts the outfit.

Have fun xx

Sorry but this is terrible advice. Leggings under skirts, tunics and statement necklaces?

OP, please don’t do any of this unless Bay Trading circa 2005 is the look you’re going for.

Oh how I miss Bay Trading 😂

But I totally agree. This is exceptionally dated and unfashionable advice.

Dropped shoulder tops are making your shoulders look very wide OP. I think the v neckline is good though. Try raglan or set in sleeves. A sweater vest could also work well.
melissa murrell on YouTube might be helpful to take a look at, she does style master classes for women of different shapes and sizes.

Not at all darling. You are getting yourself confused with being a slave to trend as opposed to dressing to flatter the body.

Classic styling using shapes and pieces that flatter different body types never changes.

Trendy looks do.

Eh? No, just no. Unless you're hoping to telephoto back to 1995?

Your last outfit is better. But the top is too long and there's too much fabric under the arms.

Ah but that's where we differ darling

Classic styling using flattering shapes never dates.

You can then use the advice to adapt to current fashion that appeals to you.

That's why so many people look so awful - desperation to be trendy rather than dressing for their shape.

PadamPadamPDoom · 19/10/2025 18:56

Have you any footwear, @keepcalmanddance? It’s much easier to comment on an outfit if one can see the whole thing, and your choice of shoes or boots could make a huge difference.

From the photos you’ve shown I’d say you’re a bit hung up on making your lower half as tiny as possible - which puts it out of balance with your top half. What you actually need is a skirt, or trousers that have as much presence as your shoulders and upper body.

JurassicPark4Eva · 19/10/2025 18:56

That's a massive improvement. And can you see that the stomach you worried about isn't even visible?

Not a single thing you suggested is "classic styling".

Thick tights and leggings? Cardigans? Vest tops under v necks? Statement necklaces?

Classic styling is dressing for your shape, well made and well cut clothes, good use of colour and shape. Not leggings.

Tunics, leggings with skirts and statement necklaces aren’t classic hen, they’re dated.

Sorry but it’s still not great @keepcalmanddance - a tight skirt and oversized top is making you look top heavy big bigger than you are. I echo the posters who recommend checking out Melissa Murrell to get some ideas as to how to dress for your body type.

SliceofTosst · 19/10/2025 19:05

Better but still not a very well fitting top. There's so much material under the armpits.

neverbeenskiing · 19/10/2025 19:05

I think the length of skirt isn't particularly flattering. I'd go with a shorter skirt (and tights) or a midi length skirt with knee high boots. There are lots of black or dark coloured demim/satin/leather look midi length skirts in the shops atm that are flattering and look good with a pair of black or brown knee high boots.

The jumper is too long. If you don't feel comfortable tucking a jumper in maybe try a shorter 'boxy' style jumper, will be much more flattering.

thisishowloween · 19/10/2025 19:06

Starling7 · 19/10/2025 18:03

Tried and tested for this type of figure for over 20 years darling.

Definitely the most flattering casual shapes for someone with good legs, a larger bust and a bit of a tummy.

A deep V with a contrasting layer underneath always looks good, as do shorter lengths with tights or leggings or boots.

Statement necklaces change every season but are always good to lift the eye with a casual outfit.

The nineties are calling you.

thisishowloween · 19/10/2025 19:08

keepcalmanddance · 19/10/2025 18:41

It's better but the skirt just isn't a flattering style or length.

Starling7 · 19/10/2025 19:18

These suggestions were exchanging shapes alone. Ie the OP has stated that she wears leggings, and sweaters but wanted to try something different which resulted in the skirt and chunky Sweater combo.
The shapes I suggested instead will flatter her shape whilst keeping to her familiar staples.

Boxy sweaters are literally the most unflattering top someone with a larger bust and a but of a tummy can wear.

Tucking in sweaters also just adds to the waistline.

Starling7 · 19/10/2025 19:29

manicpixieschemegirl · 19/10/2025 12:37

Bluntly, no one would look at you in this outfit, even if you were wearing leggings instead of the skirt, and think “oh she has nice legs”. You absolutely do but they’re totally lost in this outfit - the proportions are all off.

A slightly more fitted top half and wide leg or flared jeans/trousers, or an a-line skirt would create a much more balanced look.

Wide Leg or flared jeans?? Hardly.

This is where trendy people go wrong.

If your best feature is your legs then the last thing you do is hide them in bulky trousers.

Starling7 · 19/10/2025 19:34

JurassicPark4Eva · 19/10/2025 12:25

Bigger tops can often make you look larger rather than slimmer. Well fitted, well cut clothes that hit your body in the right places will always look much more flattering!

If that jumper were 3-4" shorter it would completely rebalance you.

You could wear that jumper with straight it boot cut blue jeans and tuck the sides into the waist to shorten it, I reckon that would be better.

The skirt length just doesn't work with that jumper length. Have a Google on how to dress with proportions to balance out your shape?

Not good advice.

A chunky sweater that's 4 inches shorter would be even more unflattering.

Boot cut jeans will also add weight.

andfinallyhereweare · 19/10/2025 19:34

Yes you do sorry, it’s the outfit the teacher nuns at my school would have been comfortable in. I’m not much younger than you and don’t dress that way at all- you’re 40 not 80!
