Do I look frumpy in this outfit? I’m early 40s. Also do I look like I’m slightly pregnant?

It’s a no from me. The jumper is all out of shape and very unflattering. Sorry OP.

keepcalmanddance · 19/10/2025 12:30

@JurassicPark4Evai have DM boots. Don’t really have any shirts just tshirts. Have a couple of smart tops which I guess I could have tucked in. So ill try that later (out now) and post again to see if that looks better.. I’m just so conscious of my pregnant looking belly

Your jumper looks too big for you, which I think is common in people trying to hide their stomach. I've been there but eventually I thought what the fuck am I doing trying to pretend I don't have a stomach, it's quite clear no matter how baggy my clothes are.

Even in still wanting to disguise it you could easily wear a jumper a size or two smaller and wouldn't look bad for it at all.

I'm also going against the grain and think the skirt length is nice on you, you just need a better fitted top with it. You could also wear a blazer to feel you're a bit more shored up.

meganorks · 19/10/2025 12:06

Just from that photo I would have guessed you were 60s - sorry!

Im mid 60's and would never wear that outfit!!! ... Just looks like you don't care about yourself op.
Ditch the jumper and find a pretty blouse.

ChineseSpymaster · 19/10/2025 12:32

It does look a bit frumpy yes. Does it matter? Depends how much you think it does.

Sometimes one goes for comfort over style. Also not everyone wants to ruin/ wear out/ spill food on their favourite clothes when just being at home.

So she looks frumpy but skinny?

ChocolateCinderToffee · 19/10/2025 12:33

The jumper looks a bit past its best, being baggy at the bottom, but might be ok with a good pair of jeans. I wouldn't try to hide your tummy by covering it with something long, but I'd wear something that comes halfway down it instead and which fits without being tight.

'Frumpy' is such a subjective concept. I see things that get loads of admiring comments on here that I (in my 60s) wouldn't be seen dead in: pie-crust collars, random frills stuck on everywhere, tiered skirts (we all had a tiered skirt from Laura Ashley back in the day, and one was enough), browns and maroons and khakis - yet they appear to be the height of fashion. I think the best thing is to choose colours that suit you and clothes that you are comfortable in and which fit.

SparklyBrickViper · 19/10/2025 12:34

I’d say you’re dressed but not styled.

There are loads of accounts on Instagram with different size/shape women sharing outfits ideas. Why not search for an age bracket/style type and see what’s in your wardrobe that looks similar you could adapt.

evilharpy · 19/10/2025 12:34

Sorry OP, it's not great. The lengths and proportions are all wrong and the jumper looks pulled out of shape.

Just as an experiment, try tucking the jumper in like this (photo might take a while to come through) and post another photo. It might improve the proportions and give the suggestion of a waist.

CharlieKirkRIP · 19/10/2025 12:34

Yes and yes. The clothes look on their last legs and are ill fitting. You do have a large stomach area but as it’s a will shot, your posture may be adding to it.

Thindog · 19/10/2025 12:35

Sell the jumper to a fisherman. If you’re conscious of your belly wear a pretty blouse .

I don’t think you look pregnant. You look like a fairly average 45 year old woman. A little bit of a mom belly like most of us.
Have you tried any shapewear to help smooth you out and feel more confident?
I agree that bigger clothes don’t actually help. They don’t hide things much they just make you look bigger and more shapeless all round.

Exactly!

FastFood · 19/10/2025 12:36

I'm afraid so OP. It looks like you don't want people to see you.
The jumper is too damaged, the bottom is loose, just bin it or try to salvage it by tucking it in.
The skirt length and material are unflattering. I think that gal belongs to the bin, I don't see what you could do with that.

Don't think that your age or your figure are a problem though. I see plenty of very cool women, who manage to be stylish, intential, and comfortable, whatever their age or size.

I'd suggest you spend a bit of time collecting styles you like on Pinterest, see what they have in common and work from there.

manicpixieschemegirl · 19/10/2025 12:37

keepcalmanddance · 19/10/2025 12:21

The prob I have is I have nice legs but a big belly which is why I tend to go for bigger tops to disguise that

Bluntly, no one would look at you in this outfit, even if you were wearing leggings instead of the skirt, and think “oh she has nice legs”. You absolutely do but they’re totally lost in this outfit - the proportions are all off.

A slightly more fitted top half and wide leg or flared jeans/trousers, or an a-line skirt would create a much more balanced look.

ForZanyAquaViewer · 19/10/2025 12:37

Yes, that is a frumpy and unflattering outfit. As you want to address that, a few thoughts:

  • You write about your consciousness of your belly a lot. Are you taking any steps to address your weight/fitness? As that’s really the foundation for a lot of things.
  • There’s an MN Style and Beauty board that is a really great place to get specific, non-judgmental advice. They’ll even suggest specific items in your price range. Highly recommend.
  • I also recommend trawling Insta and finding a fashion influencer who is roughly your age and size, and whose style you like (people on the Style and Beauty board will be able to give you suggestions). They’ll give you a template to work from + inspiration.

Beachcomber74 · 19/10/2025 12:38

Don’t mix blue and black

CharlieKirkRIP · 19/10/2025 12:38

I also think you need better underwear as the bra is not supporting your breasts.

They need to be brought up and closer together as that will make you look slimmer. In the photo it looks like your breasts have argued and are trying to move away from each other.

a good pair of knickers will help to streamline your stomach area.

Start with good foundation garments because no matter what you wear I’d you don’t have good fitting underwear all clothes will hang badly on you.

Seriously? That's the least of the problems with that outfit!

You look warm and comfy, that’s what is most important.

It's not to OP, that's why she posted on here for help.
It's possible to be warm and comfortable whilst wanting to look good.

Agree with others OP, colours look drab. There was a great transformation on here not long ago from an OP who got a lot of stuff from Uniqlo, M&S and John Lewis. Trying to jig my memory, I realise you're not looking to buy new stuff.
I'll link if I find it.
