To think people are naive re cocaine

I see threads on here all the time where women find out their husband has been doing coke etc and are absolutely floored.
But it always amazes me how oblivious people are to how common it really is. I’m childfree and in my late 20s and i go on nights out almost every week so you get to know all of the other regulars in the bars. I do not know one person that I’ve met through going out that doesn’t do cocaine.

These people have professional jobs Monday - Friday. Some of them I know are teachers, nursery staff, work in the passport office. It is so common.

I also see a lot posters describing a change in behaviour and people suggest it could be drugs. But unless you’re doing things like heroin or spice, cocaine does not make you act in the ways people suggest.

Do people really not know how common casual use of cocaine is in this country?

DH & I had adversity growing up. So have my DC. None have turned to drugs. I'd have no idea where to buy heroin.

Pretty much any city Centre pub

My company recently introduced mandatory drug testing.

So far 25 employees (out of about 400) have been either sacked or suspended because they failed the test. Not all of them failed for cocaine, but it was the majority. Some of them, I wasn't particularly surprised. Some of them, I was. And these were employees at all levels of responsibility/seniority. It really is quite rife!

Is that you London Metropolitan police ?

White is crack. Nobody calls cocaine "white". Crack and heroin are "white" and "brown".

I used to think the song “Golden Brown” was about a suntan.
I’ll get my coat.

Nothing surprises me anymore tbh. There should be mandatory drugs testing in all places of work on a Monday morning ? Would that help ? I genuinely don’t care if someone dies from an overdose. It’s sad for their families etc etc but I genuinely do not care. Darwin’s theory in action?

People keep saying this but why? Why should workplaces police whether or not staff have been taking drugs? They’re businesses. Do you seriously think all employers from the NHs to Barclays Bank to tesco to Astra zeneca to slaughter and May should drug test all their employees every Monday? Why?!? And why would it be an employers place in society to do that?

Good. You should be getting more informed about your "job".

You should get more informed about the bull shit you come out with.
As I mentioned earlier I'm a member of a recovery group, dealing with cocaine as unfortunately I fell into addiction many years ago, and you have a police officer who dealt with multiple people using/selling drugs, yet you're better informed.

Thunderytoday · 19/10/2025 15:13

I said earlier in the thread that I don’t see cocaine in my circles. However I have two exes who are into it and they are a ‘type’ - middle aged football supporters/ex-hooligans and they and their mates are obsessed. I went out with one of them again after not having seen him for thirty years and I told him the next day that I didn’t want to see him again as all he did was talk about cocaine. He appeared shocked and thought he hadn’t. The other one is constantly sniffing but claims he has allergies.

PersephoneParlormaid · 19/10/2025 15:14

Young people dying of heart disease caused by drug use. Such a waste.

Because responsible people do not take drugs. I don't think it should be every Monday, I think it should be far more random than that to weed out those who shouldn't be trusted.

It’s common in your social circle. That is all.

This.

I was once in a social circle where it was done.

Since then, I haven't hung around with people who do any drugs (apart from some occasional pot). Different groups are different.

There really isn't a "type"...coke users come from all different socioeconomic backgrounds.

Thunderytoday · 19/10/2025 15:16

No they are a ‘type’ but not saying all people who take cocaine are like them - not at all.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 19/10/2025 15:17

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 19/10/2025 14:54

I think some of us must give off some sort of vibes which tell others not to talk about drugs and certainly not to offer them!

I guess if cocaine makes people arrogant and high energy, I'd just avoid them anyway. I do know one person who has taken cocaine and his life is utter chaos so I very much keep him at arm's length. I'm scared of the type of people who are involved in drug dealing and I want no connection to them. They can live in their chaotic, seedy world and I'll live in my nice cosy world. What's wrong with a cup of tea and a bar of chocolate?

You have hit the nail on the head with your first sentence and what the OP was saying - people who take drugs discreetly won't just announce it to all and sundry at work or at school drop off, they will suspect who does it - sort of like when you know, you know . Similar to the famous gaydar back when it was still frowned upon.

It's a taboo subject that no one wants to bring up first, but once someone does then people will be honest. But ,when many people on this thread, say they would never associate with people who take drugs, then your friends, family and acquaintances aren't going to admit that to you are they, so you'll never know.

There's a type. Ignorant and selfish.

I imagine it might be common in your social circles in the bigger cities, specifically London, Manchester maybe. Do you live in London? But otherwise not something which is common with people in the circles I socialise in. I think it’s a class thing too. It seems Weed is the drug of choice for the lower classes, whereas Coke for the middle and upper classes.

Plenty of weed among the middle class too.

Ombof · 19/10/2025 15:18

Lighteningstrikes · 19/10/2025 15:07

That’s a very naive and narrow minded take on drug taking.

A multitude of factors can be involved.

Thank yourself very lucky and stop being so smug.

Lucky? As far as I know drug taking is a voluntary choice an individual makes? I've suffered through bad times, been depressed and suicidal. Never found the need to go out and buy drugs.

White collar workers are the biggest customers for purchasing cocaine. 😅 there is an app they can order from, doorstep delivery.

Rabbittods · 19/10/2025 15:19

Sad how normal it actually is, we stopped going to our local because it's rife in there, tipping point was when some silly twat got aggressive just after he'd come out the bogs, because we were 'staring at him' ffs. This was in a normal street pub at 8 in the evening, nope fuck off you scruffy rats.

Because companies should take a moral and ethical stance on things like modern slavery. Because employers can and should set behaviour expectations for their staff which can extend to behaviours out of work. I wouldn’t want to work somewhere that turned a blind eye to anything that happened outside 9-5. Would you?

Modern slavery? Like travelling to watch the football in Quatar? Buying a NIKE product? Or getting a brass in on a stag do? Or going to certain venues when in Eastern Europe? There was a thread on the price of chocolate, the profits aren't passed on, so fair enough, but chocolate shouldn't be cheap. Uniqlo, uses child labour and modern day slavery, yet here it is, advertised on a parenting site. We all disassociate when it suits us.
Random drug testing was done in a hospital my DD works in. From the cleaners to the doctors, there were people testing positive. Speed use was rife when I worked in healthcare. I still think that the dismantling of the European route for drugs, so the Afghanistan route could flourish, was quite deliberate.

I can only imagine! Things don't take long to cross the pond. This was 9 years ago, now I come to think of it but it definitely wasn't as obvious in Dublin back then nor as socially normalised.

That's interesting because the last time I was in the company of someone who told me he'd just taken coke was in Dublin. It was about 10 years ago because as I said, I don't have (illegal) drug users in my circle of friends.
