Renee Zellweger Hiding GIF by Working Title

My mind is blown. How did I not know that there is no standard sizing.

I have either been living under a rock (possible) or have been gaslit by the bedding and manchester (Aussie term) industry for 50+ years.

I get UK sizes may vary with AU sizes, but I did not know that IKEAS are one size and in department stores (it is completely pot luck).

Every year, we have an existential bedding crisis at the great summer/winter doona/duvet swap out. The covers don't fit.

So this year I measured them and realised the rookie error I have made.

Mind is quite warped by this discovery. Am I. The only person on the planet who didn't know this???

YABU - Def living under a rock
YANBU - agree that mismatched size standards are batshit.

Everybody is snoozing under their irregular sized duvets in the UK.

Aus daytime crowd?

I totally agree. It's an almighty faff to change duvet covers anyway and to have to play the which-way-does-it-fit (or even the does-it-fit-at-all) game, drives me crazy!

Thank you for replying, I was starting to think it was just me. I think it's an international conspiracy. Akin to nothing on the telly on a Friday night.

All of the bizarre shaped and sized duvets have been laundered today and will be making their way to storage for use when we move (renters) as moving blankets.

One of the most mocked qualities of Swedes on the international political and/or NGO scene is their smugness, with the smug inserted phrase ”In Sweden we have a system” being held up as a prime example. But you know what, in Sweden we have a fucking system for duvets and duvet covers and it bloody works. Singe duvet 150x200. Duvet cover same size. The end.

(ok breaks down a little with double duvets but that’s because it’s an inherently foreign concept to the nation)

GarlicPound · 19/10/2025 08:00

The solution is to buy ONLY superking covers - or IKEA's biggest size, but never mix sizing schemes.

On smaller beds you'll have to tuck the empty sides of the cover in. Or, better, have only superking duvets (from the same system), allowing them to drape luxuriously over the floor in the kids' rooms.

Something like that, anyway 😳

GarlicPound · 19/10/2025 08:03

@banivani, 150x200 is a king size bed over here! OK, you might want the duvet a little bigger than the mattress, but it's more than fine for a double bed ...

Although I can't understand why couples won't have a duvet each, it makes so much more sense.

King size here is 245 x 210. Queen is 210 x 210. We have no fewer than FIVE duvets that are supposed to be K or Q that are nothing like those dimensions.

Bastards.

A duvet each is a good idea but that would mean 5 winter duvets and 5 summer duvets and having to change 5 sets each week 😲.

And fitted sheets!

Catsknowbest · 19/10/2025 08:24

I have left the maddening world of duvet covers and now gone coverless gorgeous duvets and top sheet. I am never looking back 🤣 (UK) For info these are fully machine washable duvets with permanent pretty covers and matching pillow cases

My little one has got a space themed one. He loves it

I am currently torn. I need a new duvet. The duvet I want does not match the size the all the duvet covers I own (duvet covers from Ikea, possible new duvet not from Ikea).
I either need to maintain brand loyalty to Ikea or..... replace all my bedding!

We had this, needed all new bedding. In the end I got rid of all the old duvets and sets and went for the coverless. We have two doubles and I got king size for both. Saves so much messing around plus the coverless are lovely. We use a top sheet which with the pillow cases is washed every 5/6 days, and the coverless duvet only needs washing every 3-4 weeks. And I am no longer swearing whilst making the beds.....🤔 we have a 9kg washing machine which is perfectly ample for washing the king-size 10.5 tog and it dries quickly on gentle tumble dryer setting. In summer it will dry easily on the line

banivani · 19/10/2025 09:20

What you need is a national standardisation committee 1960s style but oh no such things are not allowed these days because it would infringe on capitalist freedom, ie the freedom for individuals to spend too long measuring bloody duvets. [/rant]

Hope you do- they really are great 👍

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/10/2025 10:33

I’ve never had an issue

I buy single for dd

king for myself

they all fit

muddyford · 19/10/2025 10:43

I've never had a problem. Duvers and covers have come from various places but the appropriate sized covers fit the right duvets.

FKAT · 19/10/2025 10:46

YANBU and can I also add takeaway tupperware boxes into the standardisation strategy.

CalzoneOnLegs · 19/10/2025 10:50

I’ve never had a problem either, same with pillows and their covers.
