Viewer stole from my house?

Calcaata · 18/10/2025 20:29

I have a Diptique candle, 3 wick and cost £180. I’ve had two house viewings today, not done by myself but by the estate agent. I’ve come home and it’s missing.

Aibu to expect the estate agent to reimburse me?? I won’t be able to contact them now until Monday.

When you think about it it is strange that we allow complete strangers to wander around our homes.

they could pocket anything - a small ornament, perfume. We have small items of value sitting about that we probably don’t give much thought to.

Yes. Completely hysterical.

Cheap doesn't mean 'smoke damage'. What an oversimplification of a very complex issue. Although I am not sure why I am surprised given you have displayed a rather incredible lack of critical thinking throughout this thread.

Critical thinking over a candle. And yes cheap does mean smoke damage, as I learned by buying and burning them!

I'm very sorry you've had a bad experienced, but not all small, independent, businesses are crap.

And I am very sorry my use of emojis bothers you so much you've felt compelled to comment on it multiple times. 😉😃😂😳

And I will again.

If I don't see the cry laughing emoji on this thread again it won't be too soon.

Do people really think sticking one on the end of their post hides all the passive aggressive jibes they've thrown about. They must take us for stupid.

Edited

Yes. I can now see why MN got rid of the laugh reaction,

Rothschild OP here, just back from burning some £50s at the bonfire pit. Apologies in all honesty I’ve not read all the comments, as it’s moved so fast.

I would like to assure people I’m not “gullible”, I didn’t save up every last penny, but it and then sit in the dark ever since, eating crackers and too scared to burn said candle. If that were true though and I told you they were Jacob’s crackers I’d probably get hung up and demanded to give an explanation as to why I didn’t buy Tesco Own Brand.

I’d also like to reassure people I didn’t wake up this morning feeling smug because username124 from somewhere in the world knows that me a completely stranger with no name/face/age own the very elitist, exclusive, definitely can’t be bought at John Lewis candle.

It’s actually quite shocked me that people have deemed this theft as ok. It shows where your morals really are. I treat everyone as an equal. I wouldn’t steal from anyone - regardless of whether they could replace it or not. But that makes me glad to be me and not some of the questionable people on this thread.

(I also don’t name call because I’m not 7 and I was brought up right but there you go)

it would be difficult to prove, but i'd certainly discuss it with the estate agent and ask if viewers are left unsupervised on viewings.

Tesco own brand cream crackers? Ooh get you, some of us can only dream of such luxury 😉.

In all seriousness you've handled yourself brilliantly and with class on this thread.

LittleMoreLegAction · 19/10/2025 20:54

You can pay in instalments in case anyone wants this one!

Viewer stole from my house?
Differentforgirls · 19/10/2025 20:54

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 19/10/2025 17:40

Oh yes, cheap DOES mean smoke damage in some cases. And lots of nasty greasy residue on EVERYTHING as I said earlier. I have known people this has happened to. (I said this earlier too.)

For someone who claims to work in candle making, you don't know very much about candles. At all!

😂

!

Give you something else to laugh at. I keep all the bits at the bottom of my candles. Plus the glass containers. And my husband fashions new candles out of them. We even bought wicks 😆. I can guarantee they are better quality than laughing posters cheapos are.

Betty1625 · 19/10/2025 20:57

I do hope you will complain to the estate agents. I wouldn't be able to trust them again...

Ireolu · 19/10/2025 20:57

MN on a tangent again missing the point of the thread and getting bogged down because of the cost of the missing candle!

EAs are interesting folk. CCTV may be helpful. If the thief was stupid enough to hand carry it out of your house. This has been an eye-opening thread though. Expensive things need putting away for house viewings. Who would have thought people would be scummy enough to steal when allowed into your space?

LittleMoreLegAction · 19/10/2025 20:58

I think that the candle industry will benefit from this thread. 💰🕯️

Betty1625 · 19/10/2025 20:58

Simonjt · 19/10/2025 08:32

It clearly wasn’t unusual as when I phoned to report it they just asked how much I needed to replace it yet ‘insisted’ they hadn’t seen it. It was worth a lot of money and had been inside a chest in the spare room rather than on show. I reported it to the police and funnily enough the vase appeared in their office the next day.

That's awful, they even rummaged through your belongings!

Ewock · 19/10/2025 20:59

NotForTheMoneyandNotForTheApplause · 19/10/2025 19:00

Maybe I'm the unusual one but if I think of a product (can't actually think of example) where I think people are gullible to pay so much for it the last thing I'd be wishing was that I could afford to do the same, I'd be whatever the opposite of jealous is.

I just can't equate fools and their money being easily parted with jealousy

Your logic doesn't track. The op loves the candle and gets a lot of pleasure from it so for her it isn't foolish to pay that price. It is worth it to her. I'm sure we all spend money on items/experiences that others think are a waste of money. But it is very rude to express that and completely ignores the issue which is that someone stole something from the op house. Doesn't matter what price it was or what it was, theft is theft.

Ireolu · 19/10/2025 21:00

Emonade · 18/10/2025 22:41

It is a waste and I don’t know how people can live with themselves unless I am being totally unreasonable and they are also giving significant amounts to charity

You are being unreasonable
This is also high up as one of the stupidest things I have personally ever read on MN.

Did you see a post where ea took a vase that was put away in a chest?
It's been an eye opened for me too; who knew that scummos are allowed to steal from you if you are deemed a bit posh by MNers. God forbid you treat yourself to something nice.

Think my 3 wick was 4.99 from Aldi / got it last week

Whoop de doo!

So many chippy fuckers and their cheap candles on this forum.

Rhaidimiddim · 19/10/2025 21:04

You must tell the estate agent so they can keep an eye on these viewers.

Plenty though, have advised and empathised. So perhaps focus on that rather that the obvious chippy idiots.

namechangetheworld · 19/10/2025 21:24

I used to work as an EA and one of my biggest fears was being accused of stealing something. People (usually the ones with more money than sense) would leave all sorts of shit lying around on the side - cash, jewellery, expensive make-up - that could be very easily misplaced.

You have no chance of getting it back. The EA won't just hand over £180 cash without absolute proof that it was taken by one of their agents, and the viewer will have probably given a false name and address (not that the EA would give it to you anyway!)
