Viewer stole from my house?

Calcaata · 18/10/2025 20:29

I have a Diptique candle, 3 wick and cost £180. I’ve had two house viewings today, not done by myself but by the estate agent. I’ve come home and it’s missing.

Aibu to expect the estate agent to reimburse me?? I won’t be able to contact them now until Monday.

They don’t need burning they smell gorgeous just sitting with the lid off

It's a candle, meant for burning and replacing.
If you'd burn a cheaper candle why not this one.

It's like the people who buy expensive perfume or beautiful crockery, clothes or whatever and then don't use them because "they're too good".

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/10/2025 10:46

Sorry it got stolen. Def contact police and then estate agent

I love Candles and in shock at £180

i bulk at buying Yankee for £26 but the smell does last

Super helpful.

I thought I was being so with my £3.99 candle from TKMAXX, until someone mentioned a £2 candle from Tescos!

I think the thought process is this is some sort of karma and the OP deserved to have her property stolen if she's going to throw a lot of money on one item (when you can get a similar one from TK Maxx for £3.99) 🙄.

Would I spend that much myself? No
Do I care that the OP chose to? No
Did she deserve to have it nicked? Abso-fucking-lutely not.

Some of these posters sound like they model themselves on Miriam Margolyes character in Blackadder.

Edited

Fully agree. I'd not spend £180 on a candel either but I feel no bad to anyone who can and does.

This jealous and entitled thinking is probably what ok'd the theifs conscious. That OP was undeserving and the tow rag deserved it more. Possibly their own act of charity with this type of mindset. They was doing a OP a favour according to some posters. Unbelievable.

OP was asking for it?
It's OK to take what you can't earn yourself or be willingly given.

I think that's how incels think too.

Edit: I didnt mean to quote myself and cant remove it 🤦‍♀️ 🤦‍♀️ 🤦‍♀️

@Calcaata
I realise its a tangent... but instead of winding yourself up responding to goady antagonists with chips on their shoulder who want to berate your for owning something not 100% practical (like almost every other human on the planet)...
maybe bother engaging with (and / or thanking?) the posters who took time to directly respond to your OP and actually provide useful advice.

My reply on page 1 had (IMO 🤣) great advice (30 other users also think so) and hasn't had so much as a thank you click <mild flounce>

I'm being tongue in cheek but I'm amazed / mildly annoyed you are take the time to do the former but not the later as...
A. It won't make you feel better after this honestly quite horrible incident
B. It's mildly rude to ask for help and not acknowledge when its given.

Edited

Absolutely agree with this! Haven't given any advice as yours was spot on, same as many others.

B1anche · 19/10/2025 11:01

What a shame this thread got so derailed. Any good advice has been lost within the unhelpful comments about candles. The point is, OP has had something worth a couple of hundred quid stolen.

OP, what will you do next? I think you should report it to the police and advise the estate agent that you have done so.

DancingNotDrowning · 19/10/2025 11:04

Brits pronounce it Dip - teak

The French add more of an inflection in the end so more like dip - teak - er

Reallyneedsaholiday · 19/10/2025 11:05

Speak to the estate agent. Whether they will reimburse you or not, I’m not sure tbh. But they WILL be watching that particular agent very closely in future, and would flag the viewer for any other viewings both within their own agency, and other local agents.
I am so sorry this happened. It’s a big thing letting strangers into your home like that.

themerchentofvenus · 19/10/2025 10:10

@Calcaata think about this...

How many viewers looking round would firstly be looking at a candle and secondly know what a £180 candle looks like?

So my guess is that the EA had clocked it on a previous visit then taken it this time.

I would contact the EA tomorrow morning and tell them the candle needs to reappear in 24 hours otherwise the police will be notified and they will need the name/address of the viewer and the agent that did the viewing as one of them stole it.

Yes this was my original thought. I wouldn't have a clue about what was an expensive candle so wouldn't have considered nicking it (if I was in the mindset of stealing anything which I should clarify I'm not!)

Otoh I'm making the (could be wrong) assumption that Op isn't burning £180 candles in a 1 bed studio at the dodgy end of town, so if she's selling a high end property then probably the people coming to view it would be of a similar income and thus possible would recognise the brand as an expensive one. Still doesn't get the estate agent off the hook as they should be more aware of the opportunity for potential theft in properties with high value items.

OP had the candle been used? If so that's even weirder - such a risk for something that would have minimal resale value. As shown on here, its not like you could take it down the market place and flog it for £45 - as lots of people would still think that's too expensive for a candle, and people who would appreciate diptique wouldn't want to buy a second hand used one!

PleaseStopEatingMyStuff · 19/10/2025 11:15

Awful. I'd be straight on to the Estate Agents on Monday. Let them know the price & ask them how they intend to sort it out??
It's possibly the viewing agent that swiped it rather than a viewer. I would imagine the candle would be fairly bulky & difficult to pop under a coat/pocket during a viewing.
Around here, viewing agents are very different to the people who work in the estate agents. They literally just pick up the key & show people a house. They may only work for them for a short time.
I hope you get it sorted.

Luckyingame · 19/10/2025 11:19

Off topic, but why would a house viewer steal a candle.... albeit an overpriced one?

Namerequired · 19/10/2025 11:24

Definitely contact them for sure, they should reimburse you. It never occurred to me it could be the ea themselves until I saw further comments.
I must admit I was a bit £180 for a candle, but I don’t see how it’s any different from any other expensive item that people don’t need. But for curiosity only, is it worth £180? Does it smell/look amazing? Would you buy it again?

flopsyuk · 19/10/2025 11:24

Was the candle scented? If so, check in the drawers around where it was sitting. If near a door they could have placed it outside.

I get nausea and sickness from strong scents and some candles (even just sitting there) can set me off.

Someone may have had a reaction to it and placed it in a drawer for one of the viewings and forgotten to put it back.

I've seen Estate agents remove plug in air fresheners etc during viewings if people complain about the smell or feel sick. Especially if someone pregnant is viewing.

Maybe they just really loved the smell and thought op wouldn’t notice it missing. Maybe they didn’t know it was expensive?

NewGoldFox · 19/10/2025 11:31

I would be more suspicious of the estate agent.

You are more surprised that someone pays that for a candle than you are that someone would steal said candle? Who bloody steals ANYTHING from a house they are viewing? Or, in-fact, anywhere? Is it ok to steal someone’s Range Rover, because who pays £100k for a car? What about a nice watch? Ok to steal that, because who pays £5k plus for a watch? Theft is theft and it’s all shitty behaviour from entitled people who don’t want to work for the things they think they deserve.

Why is it any different to spending stupid money on handbags, shoes, cars, particular food etc etc? People have different things that make them happy, and they spend their disposable (and sometimes not) income on. Why is a candle any less deserving of this. Different folks
